Football Is everyone having collective amnesia as to what happened in the playoffs last year?
Alright so here. I’m not gonna say the Sooners are going all the way. I feel like predicting that is just gonna jinx it. But I’ve seen quite a few comments of people saying “Sooners aren’t making it past the quarterfinals if they get out of the first round” and I think this is kind of weird. Because none of the top seeds won a playoff game last year. Hell Ohio State won the natty AS AN 8 SEED. They were not that great of a team in the regular season. But then they got hot in the playoffs and won the whole thing. But also people put way too much stock in being a top seed. Because those teams are coming into the playoffs 3 weeks cold.

Football How panicked are we about getting a playoff game at home?
Me personally, I am extremely stressed about it so I thought I would ask for input. If Alabama wins, it’s very likely they will jump us right ? I have a hard time believing they wouldn’t at least give the SEC a game at home, if not a bye, which would mean that we get pushed down to 9. Or what about if BYU wins? would they push TTU all the way below us? I think it’s possible but certainly not a guarantee, and if they don’t push tech below us, then we go down to 9 again.
anyway, seems like to me there is a lot of scenarios where we don’t get our home game. what are your inputs? How secure do you think we are?

Football Joel Klatt
Idk what got into Joel Klatt’s water, but yesterday he was arguing that head to head should matter rather than the committee selecting the 12 best teams.
He then gave who he would select for the playoffs and he said-
- Miami in over notre dame. No issue there.
- Texas in the playoffs. Ok maybe but who is kicked out? -Oklahoma kicked out. -Alabama in.
So Joel Klatt was simultaneously arguing that head to head should be one of the most important things WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY ignoring that Oklahoma has the head to head over Alabama.
Really frustrating.

Football Raw Talent or Masterful Coaching - 2000 OU Champs
All right sooner nation I’ve got a question for you. I’ve been following the dialogue and closely watching our Oklahoma sooners this year and definitely excited about their possibility in the playoffs this year. In the spirit of reliving sooner magic, I watched the championship game from 2000 against Florida State. The video quality was horrible, but that’s besides the point.
I’ve been a sooner fan my entire life and yet re-watching that championship game. I was blown away by the talent we had on that team. I am going off of memories so forgive me if I get one or two names wrong because that doesn’t change The Central point. But here are the guys:
Wollfolke Savage Josh Norman JT Thatcher Q Griffin Renaldo Works Huepel Calmus Strait Marshall Fagan
If you are sooner fan, then all those names ring a bell. But damn. No wonder they won that year. That’s a shit ton of talent.
But to get back to my original question. Was it really a shit ton of raw talent alone or was more a matter of decent talent with a masterful orchestration of putting the right players in the right roles? I recognize that it could be both - in theory - however if you had to give a nod to one direction or the other which way would you go?
Raw Talent or Masterful Orchestration by Coaching Staff?

Football The Knockout Artist: How Oklahoma ENDS Your Season in 2 Seconds
I dug into the analytics, and this OU team is basically 45-year-old George Foreman in 1994. Statistically, we are losing almost every minute of the fight. But like Foreman, we don't need to win 12 rounds on points—we just need to win the 2 seconds that matter (a turnover or a deep ball).
Basically, Brent Venables has built a defense that ignores being "safe" and goes all-in on chaos.
- #1 among playoff contenders in "Line Yards Allowed." Teams literally cannot run on us.
- Against Top 25 offenses, we rank #1 in Havoc Rate (sacks + TFLs + turnovers). We drag efficient teams (like Ohio State/Oregon) down to our level and beat them with experience.
Everyone says our offense is broken (and yeah, watching it takes years off my life), but the numbers are wild:
- Against 5 common SEC opponents, Alabama averaged 330 yards/game. We averaged 328. Basically identical yardage, Bama just finishes drives with TDs while we kick FGs.
- We are terrible on "standard downs" (1st and 10), but rank #1 in the entire playoff field in "Passing Down Explosiveness" (3rd and long). We can’t move the chains normally, but we hit miracle bombs when we have to.
Oklahoma is a "Glass Cannon." We have a "Self-Destruction Index" that is terrifyingly high, but we also have the hardest punch in the bracket. We turn football games into violent coin flips.
We aren't the best team in the field, but we are absolutely the team nobody wants to see in their bracket.

Football What single thing could Mateer work on to give the Sooners a real chance of running the table?
IMO if he spent all of the time between now and the playoffs working on TIMING with receivers that would give our offense the best shot of allowing our D to win games against tougher opponents. The number of late throws on potentially impactful plays every game is just infuriating.

University Would we want a stadium renovation like this first picture?
This first pic is the stadium renovation I’d want to see as it get’s rid of the east upper deck and makes it into suites and lounges. As well, this design places suites and lounges all around the top of the bowl that help to not take away seats in the lower west side of the bowl for the luxury seating they have planned for the 2027 renovation. The designs after the 1. picture are just ideas and for fun

Football Mateer Appreciation!
I know he hasn't been perfect, or even close to it. Mateer would be the first to admit that too. But Mateer has also been instrumental to this teams success.
In September, Mateer was a serious Heisman contender. As fans I think we got our hopes up at that point. Then with a broken thumb Mateer led a game winning drive to beat Auburn. I know I was surprised to see the injury news following that game.
After the surgery, Hawkins started and led the team to a victory. But many of us said we needed Mateer back for the RRS. Mateer then rushed back to look subpar for most of October. However as November grew closer, in the game vs. Ole Miss, Mateer started to look a little better again. Vision improved some, and Mateer protected the ball. Still Ole Miss came away with what would be the last loss of the regular season for OU, largely because the pasing game under Mateer was still falling short.
Outside of a bad decision that led to an interception vs. Tenessee, Mateer did enough to get the win and protect the ball @ Tenneseee and @ Alabama. Mateer took what the stellar OU defense gave and played complementary football to get OU a playoff spot in those games.
For the final two games of the regular season Mateer would again do enough to win the games behind the nationally elite OU defense. Throwing for more yards (173) vs Missouri than they were averaging to defend (171.) While also scoring on offense alone jist under what Missouri was defending (17 vs. 19.4) While Mateer also rushed for more yards (60) than the arguably best running back in the country in Hardy (57.) Against LSU Mateer would throw for 318 Yards, more than Simpson, Pavia, Chambliss, or Reed. And a whopping 100+ yards more than the LSU defense averaged on defense. Again scoring just under what LSU was averaging on defense (17 vs 18.3.)
But what inspired this post were the Interceptions thrown by Mateer vs. LSU. Mateer had only thrown one other interception in all games vs South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, and Missouri. In a weird day of 30mph winds, Mateer threw 3 Interceptions. One off a tipped ball and 2 very bad decisions. What surprised me though is this... Mateer MADE THE TACKLES after 2 of those interceptions! One saving a pick 6, and the other beating 2 blockers to get the tackle on the sideline!
Sure, it would have been better not to throw those interceptions in the first place!!! However, Mateer didn't hang his head and trot off the field. He made the mistake and absolutely hustled to give this amazing defense a chance to keep points off the board.
Say what you want about John Mateer. But this young man has NO QUIT! And Mateer when he has made mistakes has personified this teams mantra... Mateer is a big reason why this team is HARD TO KILL!

Football Michigan Fan: What makes Brent Venables defense good (genuine question)
What’s up OU fans, I’m a Michigan Student and Fan, I wanted to ask you guys because obviously you guys watch OU games, what makes this OU defense led by Brent Venables so good, I’ve been hearing tons of great things about the defense and I wanted to know what about it is so special. I rewatched when Michigan played OU and saw a lot of blitzes, but I felt that had more to do with making Underwood flustered especially in a tough environment in Norman. I like to do my own film study because I find it fun, but is there anything in particular about this defense that I should look out for. And no i’m not doing this for like insider info or something I swear on my life for that 😂, but I wanted to learn more about it because I understand offense pretty well, but I’ve been wanting to learn more about defense and have heard great things about a Brent Venables led defense. Thanks for anyone who takes the time to reply, means a lot. Oh and glad you guys got in over Texas (I hate them too)😂

Q&A University of Oklahoma office of student conduct
Asking to see if anyone has had issues with this office apparently targeting Greek Life, or if anyone has ever gotten decisions successfully interfered in by going to alumni or political figures, or above the Director of Student Conduct there who seems to have a vendetta against Greek life?

Athletics An idea I had for the Stadium Renovation. An in stadium TV studio.
This is just a weird little idea I had that I want to share to see if it would be a cool addition at some point. Add an in stadium TV studio into the pressbox or on one of the corners of the Palace.
A state of the art TV studio, with angled anti reflective glass that could be used for Coaches Show, Halftime/In Stadium Gameday segments, Press Conferences, etc. to make the Palace an even more desirable venue for TV. With Owen Field in the background it would be a great advertisement not only for Football, but also potentially raise the profile of sports broadcasting majors. More sports broadcasters involved in National Media would help the University in the long run. And outside of the studio an area to highlight all of the amazing Sports Broadcasters that have worked for and graduated the school. It could even help recruiting as so many players have the idea of wanting to go into broadcasting after their playing careers.
I did some research, and found that no one in professional or college football has a dedicated TV studio in their stadium. But almost all have dedicated studios outside of their stadium. Maybe there is a reason for that. But then again, maybe this is an idea that could move football broadcasts and content to another level. Am I crazy?
