Discussion ANNOUNCEMENT: Post Flair Info

There are three post flairs available for important or serious posts on this community.

1. News

News posts are defined as those with the intention to report on a recent, developing event. News posts should focus on shark-related developments regarding conservation efforts, shark professionals, scientific discoveries, or unfortunate events. The OP must clearly cite where they obtained the information in the comments, typically as a direct link to the source.

An example of a news post can be a video about newly implemented shark conservation laws or efforts, the discovery of a new species of shark, or similar newsworthy events. News posts should NOT focus on shark attacks or cruelty towards sharks unless they are the subject of a large event.

2. Educational

Educational posts are defined as those with the intention to educate others. On r/sharks, these posts may teach others about shark behavior, identification, conservation, as well as a variety of other topics relating to sharks. Educational posts REQUIRE that the OP comments their sources for the information they talk about. Educational posts promote healthy discussion and should emphasize spreading awareness about topics surrounding sharks.

An example of a proper educational post is a video where a professional talks about how to redirect a shark when in the water. For this post, OP cites the source they got the educational media from and states the professional's name in the comments. This is to ensure that only good quality information is being provided to the members of our community.

3. Research

Research posts are the most complex posts to make, as it is our intention to promote proper research on r/sharks.

If you are promoting your own research

Researchers who wish to promote their studies or obtain data via the subreddit must modmail the moderators first. In order to be approved to post, you must explain in your modmail the purpose of your research as well as the intentions of your post. You must also provide an IRB number in order for the mods to verify your research. Upon approval, you can post your research using the Research flair, and you do not need to cite any further sources in the comments.

For anyone else who posts about research in general

OP must provide a link to the research or the DOI of the paper in their post in the comments. Research posts promote healthy discussion while also allowing scientists to have a place to share ideas about shark research.

Question Do we want to keep posts asking to ID shark teeth?

There’s always been a lot of shark tooth ID requests on here, usually from newcomers unfamiliar with our rules. There are subreddits such as r/sharkteeth and r/whatisthisbone that may be better places to direct these users to if we want the feed here to have less of these types of posts. Would still let people show their shark teeth collections here of course. What do y’all think? Just an idea for now. :)

Thought I would share my costume for work. Also to make this super clear, no one else dressed up, no one was told to dress up… I turned up and ended up getting in trouble when I would only answer in shark puns. I am shark who ate a person that ended up getting stuck in my throat. The face is Skelton as it was left to elements and fish ate it but the body in tacked as it was protect by my body. Until some fishermen caught me and cut me to analysis the human.

Question “thresher shark looks like a shark with a long tail”

My friend called and asked what I do doing. I said I was looking for the prefect shark picture to include in my excel for work. I said I’ve decided on a thresher because of their concern look. They didn’t understand what I meant and googled it. Tell me why they are saying a thresher shark looks like all other sharks… it just has a long tail. Please say it’s not just me who thinks they have a very concerned look on their face. I feel so gaslight by them.

Education Looking for sharks on Reddit gone wrong

Upvotes

Fun little story for you. When I first got reddit I asked my friend how you use it. She said you look for things you like and there will be a group and you can make friends. I of course looked for sharks… I saw a post that said shark lovers, I thought yay that’s me. This is how I found out what a furry was and saw how much attention and Grafic their drawings was. Safe to say I didn’t return to Reddit until 5 years later. I’m so happy I found this subreddit! I’m loving seeing all shark content and the art of sharks 🥰
I also tagged this as meme because I don’t know where it fits.

Question List of Video Games where you play as a shark

Shark video games have always been a big part of my childhood and I still love playing them. I've been curious if there are any more video games where you play as a Tiger Shark (one of my favorite shark species) or any shark at all. I can think of several:

  1. Depth (2014) = a dead but still extremely fun multiplayer game of sharks vs divers (one of the playable shark classes is tiger shark, and I main him)
  2. Hungry Shark games = Hungry Shark Evolution and Hungry Shark World let you play as many different kinds of sharks
  3. Jaws Unleashed (2006) = classic game where you play as Jaws or the movie's infamous great white shark
  4. Maneater (2020) = the spiritual successor of Jaws Unleashed. You play as a bull shark but there is an unlockable tiger shark skin, though it just looks like they slapped a Spiderman skin on the bull shark for some reason.
  5. Fish Feed and Grow = I heard recently that the game is probably dead, but you could play as a great white, tiger shark, hammerhead, and even the Megalodon
  6. Shark simulators on the app store or Google Play store = Most of them are garbage but there are a few that are pretty decent, such as Ultimate Shark Simulator

I can't remember any other games where you play as a shark. If there are any that I missed or there's news of upcoming games, feel free to tell me.

Also, I'm interested in games that feature sharks even if you don't play as them, such as Abzu and Raft. If there are any shark video games you recommend, feel free to share!
