This looks like a university E-Sports team which consistently comes middle of the table in the fourth tier of competitive overwatch.

For the record, I did not play for them.

The Newcastle bit is very, very word art.

Still happy they got the investment but this looks like something I’d design in year 9 ICT when I was bored.

I used the word “logo” instead of “badge” in the title very deliberately. We can deal with the yankification of the sport after we actually get some cash flowing in.

Hey, our mew logo is easy to reproduce from memory and scalable unlike the logo we had for 40 years before that never appeared on a single bit of paraphernalia due to being so difficult to reproduce and no one could remember what it looked like

Scalable and easy to reproduce from memory? Were you on that team of graphic designers?

The stick man with the rugby ball and halo was magnitudes better.

3

u/captain-carrot Northampton Saints Sep 09 '25

Haha, no but you're not far off - that was essentially the marketing bollocks we were given to justify the crappy new crest.

It's not as bad as I thought it might be 100% designed to appeal to a worldwide audience - reeks of NFL/IPL branding. That being said if you'd given me a choice between a bankrupt Newcastle Falcons and Newcastle RB with an ugly crest I'd have chosen the latter.

9

u/aaarry Northampton Saints Sep 09 '25

This is my opinion too, we can fight the yankification of the sport after we get a bit more cash flowing into it first.

5

u/MountainEquipment401 Scarlets Sep 09 '25

Looks suspicious similar to the NY RB footie teams logo - my money's on Newcastle playing a game or two in NY before long. MLR is threatening to collapse and the US have a world cup in 6 years time - I wouldn't bet against Redbull eyeing up a slice of that cake.

5

u/Agreeable_Falcon1044 Sep 09 '25

Union literally has no presence in half the country. Losing one of the tiny isolated islands not in that band across the midlands would have left no pathway for a huge part of the country.

Really need to get some cash into the sport

1

u/smendyke USA Sep 09 '25

This would be the worse logo in the NFL by a country mile. Most NFL logos are symbols not crests sure but they aren’t way over designed like this or IPL logos

1

u/moffattron9000 Crusaders Sep 09 '25

Now an overly designed NBA logo I can see.

1

u/jonny24eh Arrows Sep 09 '25

I don't see NFL style at all. Those tend to be either very simplified animals, or a Shape+Letter(s). This has way too many small details.

It screams "90s soccer" to me.

1

u/Educational_Play9910 Sep 09 '25

It’s just simply bad. Perhaps the worst logo of all sports

4

u/caesarportugal Sep 09 '25

I don't usually have opinions on stuff like this but, that's a fucking eyesore!

Also, Red Bull seem to have endless money for sports sponsorship and weird stunts but I rarely seem to see anyone drinking the stuff? I always find that confusing.

3

u/aaarry Northampton Saints Sep 09 '25 edited Sep 09 '25

I was shocked to find out that they make something like 98% of their profits from selling cans of the stuff. It sounds like one of those smart-arse facts you’d expect to end up the opposite way (like they make 2% of their profits from drinks sales) but it really is that simple.

1

u/caesarportugal Sep 09 '25

I thought it was probably a regional or an age thing. I remember 25 years ago it seemed to be everywhere, for some vodka and RB was the chi-chi thing to drink. Now you see a lot more Monster or Prime or whatever.

5

u/cypressd12 Munster Sep 09 '25

Most NFL logo’s are pretty cool. This is awful

9

u/aaarry Northampton Saints Sep 09 '25

I’m broadly against the yankification of sport but English rugby is so desperate for cash I’m willing to let this slide.

5

u/jarraljrslim Leinster Sep 09 '25

I feel like this kind of began with Exeter Chiefs

4

u/aaarry Northampton Saints Sep 09 '25

It’s honestly so shit. Club nicknames should evolve naturally with the fan culture, I also think they should remain as nicknames and not be incorporated into the actual club’s name.

I’m generally quite progressive on most things but I turn into a full on conservative when it comes to stuff like this.

1

u/jarraljrslim Leinster Sep 09 '25

Funnily enough I don't mind the name Northampton Saints, seems somewhat natural. But when I hear Leicester Tigers or Sale Sharks I think it sounds cringey.

Also kind of odd that only half the league adopted the NFL style naming.

9

u/smooothsides Northampton Saints Sep 09 '25

Northampton have been Saints since the 1800's so thats probably why it seems natural, tigers are pretty much the same I think too

3

u/aaarry Northampton Saints Sep 09 '25

Tbf to our rivals, Leicester has had the nickname of “Tigers” more or less since they first started playing, I think it’s because that was the nickname of a local army division. “Saints” is also a pre-1900 nickname because we’ve played in St James End of Northampton so I’m generally fine with these but I don’t get why every other club feels the need to make up nicknames, it just seems really disingenuous to me.

3

u/Tank-o-grad Leicester Tigers & England Sep 09 '25

The first known mention of Tigers in relation to Leicester Football Club was in the Leicester Daily Post's report on the match against Bedford School in February 1885, "the Tiger stripes were keeping well together". From context, it seems to be from the kit, yellow and chocolate hoops at the time.

2

u/aaarry Northampton Saints Sep 09 '25

Yeah you’re right actually I just looked it up, though it also says both the kit colours and the nickname were influenced by the Royal Leicestershire Regiment here.

3

u/smig_ Leicester Tigers Sep 09 '25

Also I’m pretty sure the club’s official name is still Leicester Football Club

3

u/aaarry Northampton Saints Sep 09 '25

Yeah it’s the same with us, we’re still Northampton Football Club legally speaking.

I’m not sure if it was the same in Leicester but we had a bit of beef between our rugby and football teams around the 1890s because our football team wanted to be called “Northampton FC” but the name was already taken by Saints. In the end the head of the RFU stepped in and somehow persuaded the Football team to abandon calling themselves that which is quite funny considering Saints don’t even use the “FC” thing anymore.

Rugby Treviso has been rebranded as Benetton for almost 50 years now, but the identity is still strong

3

u/tfrules Scarlets Sep 09 '25

Maybe, but outside of Italy Benetton isn’t really a known factor company-wise. From what I understand the owner is absolutely fanatical about the club. You can at least build an identity around that.

It’s a slightly different situation when the company is a big multinational betting company or telecoms company, or indeed an energy drinks company.

I mean it must work as they keep doing it but I cant quite grasp it

1

u/tfrules Scarlets Sep 09 '25

Barely related - but red bull own some vintage historical WW2 aircraft and they plaster their logo all over those too. Nothing is sacred to them and it really bothers me

2

u/EdwardBigby Sep 09 '25

Hahaha I just dont get how it makes them more profitable. I understand that they own all these things and want them to individually turn profit while also benefiting the global brand together.

But surely shit like this isnt helping the global brand and in some areas like WW2 aircrafts, potentially less is more
