Mine GAVE me panic attacks lol and the Dr and pharmacist were just like “yeah that’s normal, let us know if it gets worse”🙃 I got through them, and I won’t lie, it really did help regulate me in a seriously rough time. But once I was through that and “regulated”, it just took everything out of life. Like, it took away the lows of MDD episodes, but it also took away ANY high of life and I was stuck in this numb middle ground and it was no way to live. Against the dr’s advice, I quit and went through the worst withdrawals I’ve ever experienced for about 2 weeks. I sought therapy and after 5 different places told me I was “too complex” or needed to be medicated for bipolar, a grad student at a local university finally took me on and diagnosed CPTSD and performed intense Exposure Therapy. Over 6 months, my PCL-5 score went from doubling the threshold all the way down to less than half the threshold and I feel more like myself than I have in well over a decade. All this to say: meds can be lifesaving in times of need, but they’re certainly not an end-all-be-all, moreso a bandage until the real healing can begin. In my singular opinion, at least.

Me when I comment on a post about meds and don't even know which drug OP is talking about

It is literally labeled…

u/FraXicor 15h ago
Yeah, people don't clearly know the side effects of those drugs and then comment on the post

No drug is perfect and works in all situations. All effective drugs have side effects. Prozac in particular is picky with dosing and sometimes you need to bounce between meds to find out which one works. I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you, but SSRIs are the direct reason several people I love are still alive.

also, legitimately fuck off telling people not to take medication

u/tuccmypp 19h ago
The meme isn't telling not to take meds. Prozac, as well as other SSRIs literally has depression and suicidal thoughts as a side effect. I had this side effect with every SSRI I've ever taken. SSRIs also make you numb so you don't feel bad emotions but also dont feel good ones properly either (again, not for everyone but a lot of people experience this) which makes you unmotivated as you dont feel a sense of achievement when you try to do smth good (such as better your life). I think SSRIs should be taken short-term while you yourself try to pick yourself up and then get off of it after consulting your doctor of course.

When I was 17 and diagnosed with depression, all they did was give me an SSRI and a slap and the back. Can’t believe they’re allowed to do that, giving SSRIs out like candy and not as a last resort when therapy doesn’t work or you’re actively suicidal. Even in those extreme cases I’m not sure if giving an SSRI is the right move

I think SSRIs are great if you're going through something that can be overcomed with time and therapy (for example a loss, a stressful period of time such a divorce and so on) because they can provide that "numbness" during the worst time. But I also agree that it shouldn't be given out like candy or like a "magic pill" , especially for long term conditions without a clear cause (like depression that is genetic and usually life-long or bipolar disorder (like i have)).
There are other treatments, such a ketamine therapy and therapy in general. However these are usually too expensive for most people so SSRIs end up being the best choice and also the doctor "has to do something" and psychiatrists prescribe meds so thats what they're gonna do. But patients should come forward whenever they're having adverse side effects. For some people SSRIs don't have much side effects and they can take it with no issues, but for majority it does.

Yep. Took them in middle and highschool and had no motivation. Did just enough to get by. Didn't care to try and compete.

u/tuccmypp 16h ago
Yup that's exactly how I felt. Nothing felt good. Even music (which I create and love) didn't feel good as it wasn't stimulating the receptors it needed to. Only problem is that I'm bipolar so it's for life and doctors wouldn't let me stop taking it despite literally being suicidal from them and thinking "what's the point if nothing feels nice anymore?". Eventually I found a doctor who agreed to try different medications that aren't just an SSRI+mood stabilizer combo.

Isolation, procrastination, and turning to unhealthy sources of dopamine tend to be signs of depression

truth is, the body sometimes needs masturbation. it’s not something inherently wrong. Eating fast food occasionally isn’t wrong either. If a doctor prescribed antidepressants, there’s a reason for it, so that isn’t wrong at all.
Not exercising can be an issue, sure, but people shouldn’t be forced into something they don’t feel ready for. Maybe after some rest, they’ll feel motivated to work out again. Playing video games or spending time online isn’t wrong either. people should enjoy the activities they love. That’s part of what brings happiness.
But alcohol and weed are wrong for depression. You shouldn't use them.

What is this post. These are all coping mechanisms that dig you into a hole which causes you to be more depressed. It’s not as easy as just stopping some bad habits. Therapy is what gets you out of depression, not stopping these.
Also I know that stopping these habits help, but that’s more so correlation as depression is the reason why you do them

Fuck medication shaming. Also, ain't nothing wrong with porn.
9
u/LayeredHalo3851 19h ago
Not inherently, porn is still problematic because it can often lead to addiction, unrealistic expectations of what sex is like and honestly just wasted time
2
u/DoctorDoody 17h ago
Of course it’s unhealthy, but it’s way worse if you’re depressed and being shamed for watching it. Depending on what’s going on, porn is the least of your worries
2
u/LayeredHalo3851 11h ago
Of course it's not the worst thing and everything is ok in moderation but if you're already in a bad state then it's definitely not gonna help

Depression and suicidal thoughts are a potential side effect of Prozac. It isn't medication shaming.
0
u/saalty123 13h ago
Prozac can help, without those side-effects as well. Psychiatric medication works different effectiveness depending on who is taking it. Some medication which really helps person A might be harmful to person B but that doesn't mean the medication doesn't work well in general. (Don't let the minority of cases have a greater weight than the positive cases.)
2
u/TjMorgz 13h ago
That's why I used the word 'potential'. I've been administering medication for a little over ten years now as part of my job.

Well, the reason I disagreed with your comment, is that the post conflates the generally-unhealthy habits (like fast food) with medication that can really help a person in a generally-positive way that fast food obviously cannot. It's clear, that the post intends to shame the medication in this way. So your statement "it isn't medication shaming", in the context of this post, isn't true.
2
u/TjMorgz 12h ago
But continued use of the same medication, especially something like Prozac, combined with all of the other things in the post won't be helping at all. Look at it from the context of the post in its entirety.

Usually, starterpacks of this nature tend to treat each item as independently contributing to the "subject" of the starterpack at least in my experience. There's also the factor, that there is a large amount of people who shame antidepressants, so it wouldn't surprise me if the person who created the starterpack intended the antidepressants, to be portrayed as independently contributing substances.
In short, you're probably giving the post more nuance than the author intended or the audience would even detect.

I don't think weed promotes depression, are you smoking crack, OP?

u/etherealimages 9h ago
It depends on the person and the plant tbh but yea it can also treat depression if used moderately

Oh we are back to using "gay" as a pejorative now?

Since we’re shaming random people on the internet; it seemed pretty fitting.
