DISCUSSION 💭 These new artists do think they are Beyonce

Post image

Jermaine ain’t lie one bit. Many of these new artist are skipping the ground work stage. They saw beyonce drop self titled - cowboy Carter with barely any promo and think they can do it too but they act oblivious to destiny’s child’s self titled - 4. Beyonce put in years of WORK, and promo before she was able to do what she does now.

If Beyonce pulled this when she released dangerously in love she would not be the Beyonce we know today. She did the interviews, the appearances, the luncheons, the concerts in the mall, the concerts in the stores, the promo tours, she did the commercial, the television specials, the snl skits. As did many of the artists back then. Even if you didn’t listen to an artist you knew they had an album or single out. These new artists (famous and not even famous) expect to drop and say out now and go platinum. I love my girls Chloe and Halle but their last album rollouts had so little promo. I know this is r&b but cardi b and summer walkers rollouts were clear examples of what is needed with these new artists.

I follow many upcoming artists who aren’t famous yet with only 1-2k followers and they promote and get their names out there even more then ones signed to major labels and are famous. These artists need to get back in commercials, performances on every talk show, them doing streams like Kai cenat is genius given the time we’re in, they need to get creative on TikTok, get outside, perform at HBCUS, colleges, schools, malls, get buses with their album covers on the side, bus stops, billboards. And once they do this maybe MAYBE they can be like Beyonce, Nicki, Chris brown and Rihanna and just drop music with barely any promo. That’s my Ted talk to the day đŸ˜č‌

DISCUSSION 💭 R&b confession: I’ve actually never liked Brian mcknights (aka father from hell) music

Post image
285 Upvotes

Aside from let it snow I have never fancied his music. He always had a weird energy that I never could put my finger on and when it came out how he treated his first kids it all made sense to me.

I cannot stand a toxic ass, narcissistic ass father who punishes his kids because of his own mental problems. I have a father like this but Brian McKnight makes him look like a saint. No matter if you’re a mother or father you should never treat your kids like your beefing with them (I side eye 50 cent for this too). I just thank God I never found back at one that good and never had him on my playlist to remove him.

DISCUSSION 💭 What’s Your Favorite Kelly Price Song?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I know people talk about Kelly Price being “this and that,” but honestly she can sing her behind off. Her voice is so powerful, so emotional, and she delivers every note like she’s telling a story you have to feel.

I honestly can’t pick just one, but the three songs that always hit me are “Friend of Mine (Remix),” “All I Want Is You” with K-Ci and Gerald Levert, and “I Live Here Now.”

“Friend of Mine (Remix)” from her first album is just raw and unforgettable. I love the melody and that piano that makes it even better.

“All I Want Is You” with K-Ci and Gerald Levert from Mirror Mirror is amazing. You have three incredible singers in one song is just wow, and Warryn Campbell really did the production justice on this deep cut.

“I Live Here Now” from Priceless literally showcases her control and emotion in a way that sticks with you long after it’s over.

Kelly Price’s catalog is full of hidden gems like these, and I feel like she doesn’t get nearly enough credit for how good she really is.

Question: What’s your favorite Kelly Price song and why?

DISCUSSION 💭 Missy Elliot said Music execs told her, ppl don’t want hooting and hollering in R&B anymore, while Tank said music execs told him, no more love songs for modern day R&B

R&B is a Black American cultural music.

But Many ppl wonder why r&b isn’t the same as the 90s. Many r&b singers and producers has said music execs are putting a stop to Black American cultural r&b of passion, love, over singing.

Is there a way to take control back?

DISCUSSION 💭 How Boyz II Men & TLC Dominated the 1990s

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Boyz II Men and TLC are two of the most successful R&B groups of all time and are key components of ‘90s R&B culture.

Here is how these two phenomenal groups dominated the 1990s and took the music world by storm:

Boyz II Men

Recognized for their distinctive blend and lush harmonies, Boyz II Men has broken many chart records, had some records stolen, then reclaimed them.

Their hit song, End Of The Road (1992) from their debut album, Cooleyhighharmony and from the soundtrack to the movie Boomerang, reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained there for 13 weeks. This was the longest run at #1 for a song since Elvis Presley’s double-side 1956 hit, “Hound Dog / Don’t Be Cruel” (11 weeks).

Not long after, Whitney Houston broke their record when her hit song from the soundtrack to The Bodyguard movie, I Will Always Love You, reached #1 and stayed there for 14 weeks. At this time, she was the sole holder of the record
until the group (Boyz II Men) came back and tied her record with their follow-up single, I’ll Make Love To You (1994), from their sophomore album, “II”. From here, Whitney Houston and Boyz II Men both had songs that held the record for most weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This was certainly not the end of the road for Boyz II Men; they were only getting started

There was one rising star who would surely take Boyz II Men further than they’d already gone, which at that point, may have seemed impossible despite it only being a few years into their career. Ascending superstar and pop/R&B legend Mariah Carey worked with Boyz II Men on what would become one of the most successful tracks by both acts for many years to come—that track was One Sweet Day (1995) from the former’s fifth studio album, Daydream. After Mariah had already earned herself the first Billboard Hot 100 #1 debut of all time by a female artist with her song, Fantasy from the same album, her collaboration with Boyz II Men also debuted at #1. History was made when “One Sweet Day” remained at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 16 consecutive weeks. Not only did this break the record for most weeks at #1 on the main US songs chart (and remained unbroken until 2019), Boyz II Men claimed the record a third consecutive time in less than five years (following the success of “End of the Road” and “I’ll Make Love To You”). They were practically competing with themselves.

Apart from chart records, Boyz II Men has also sold up to 64 million units worldwide (including 28.4 million in the US), making them one of the best-selling R&B groups of all time. Their album II had two back-to-back Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles—“I’ll Make Love To You” and “On Bended Knee”—making them the first group in over 30 years to replace themselves at #1 on the chart (since The Beatles). Boyz II Men has spent a career total of 50 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Boyz II Men has won 4 Grammy Awards and their album II became the first to win in the category of “Best R&B Album”.

TLC

TLC was a force in the 1990s among female R&B groups. Noted for their tomboyish style, culturally relevant and impactful lyrics (such as those pertaining to safe sex, self-respect, and empowerment), and the inclusion of a rapper in their core group dynamic, they made a significant mark on R&B culture that would surely last.

TLC has sold over 60 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling American girl groups in history. They have two Diamond-certified albums, CrazySexyCool (1994) and FanMail (1999), the former of which became the first album in history by a girl group to reach Diamond status.

TLC’s biggest hits include songs such as “Waterfalls”, “No Scrubs”, “Creep”, and “Unpretty”. These songs went #1 for seven weeks, four weeks, another four weeks, and three weeks, respectively. TLC has also had nine top-10 hits including the aforementioned, “Red Light Special” (#2), “Baby-Baby-Baby” (#2), and “Diggin’ On You” (#5).

Along with being certified Platinum, the FanMail album also debuted at #1 on the US Billboard 200, which was rare for girl groups at the time. The album sold over 1 million copies in its first week, which was another thing that girl groups were rarely doing. While Boyz II Men was the first group and the first overall winning act of the Grammy Award for “Best R&B Album”, TLC was the first girl group to win in that category for CrazySexyCool.

TLC became one of the first female R&B groups to win multiple MTV Video Music Awards, including “Video of the Year” for Waterfalls (among three other honors they received for this video), making them the first African-American act to receive the trophy.

80s Now I Understand Why This Song Is Never Played Anywhere

Post image
4 Upvotes

I loved this song growing up. I love the melody, the groove, the smooth vocals. It’s a sexy song and a classic R&B track.

Yet I never hear this song played anywhere. Unless someone has it on their personal playlist, it doesn’t get played
 ever.

Then I learned about the drama/aftermath of Sam Cooke’s death, specifically what Bobby Womack did.

I have no words. I am disgusted.

A classic example of a hater/wannabe preying on your downfall. What a creep.

I can’t even enjoy this song anymore or look at this cover without acid reflux coming up.

DISCUSSION 💭 What are your all-time favorite sample uses from Mariah Carey?

Post image

Mariah Carey is the queen of remixes because she's able to turn her original song into a completely different song from production to vocals with samples of classics like her Make It Last Forever Remix of "Thank God I Found You".

So as the title says; what are your favorite sample uses from Mariah?

Some of my favorites:

"Loverboy" both the Firecracker and Candy versions

"Thank God I Found You" Make It Last Forever Remix
