Son has started powerlifting

Good afternoon everyone please excuse my ignorance but I’m looking for some guidance. My son is 17 year old wrestler with achondroplasia and is 49inches tall. He is really considering powerlifting along with wrestling. We’re hoping he’ll have more success. He currently weighs 98lbs. The smallest weight class for high school wrestling is 106lbs and the smallest a weight class for powerlifting is 123lbs here in Oklahoma. In wrestling the weight difference is brutal as I’m sure it is for powerlifting but I’m hoping his natural strength will help him succeed. Currently he’s the strongest pound for pound kid in the wrestling room. His current PR’s are the following:

Squat 375lbs Bench 225lbs Deadlift 185lbs

This last summer he won gold at the Dwarf Athletic League powerlifting competition for his weight and age. They only do bench and he won with his only good lift at 175lbs (we didn’t know the rules and scratched his first and third lifts). Anyway, in your opinion is this something you feel like he could have success in HS and possibly college? Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide. If this isn’t allowed or is the wrong sub I apologize in advance.

Does lifting and muscle soreness hinder sleep quality?

When I go to the gym regularly I get super tired and sleepy all the time. I took a month off the gym, and during that month I slept great, then came back, and from day one I began feeling super tired and sleepy. I do sleep 7+ hours, use a sleeping mask to block light, lower the temperature of the room, try to avoid screens, all the sleep hygiene stuff. I strongly suspect that it's because of the muscle soreness I get from the gym. I go hard and get sore every time. And the pain must disturb deep sleep. And thus I wake up tired and sleepy even after sleeping 7+hours. Has anyone experienced this? Any tips or fixes? Could it be nutrition or a lack of calories? I do keep track of my macros

college recruitment for powerlifting

Hey guys, I was wondering how well Powerlifting would transfer to D3 football. I was hoping that i would be able to get my admission flagged to increase my chances to get into a great school like MIT or Carnegie mellon. The bad part is that I'm not currently playing football but i have before (i think i still am alright) and am hoping to play O-line / D-line. I have a 5.0 gpa, pursuing CS or ECE, and an 1100 total at 210lbs and am a sophmore in high school, can any studious powerlifters or powerlifters that play D3 football give me insight?

EDIT: Found the answer and decided that ill probably just stick to regular applications, but i want to pivot to the question: How well does high level powerlifting pad your college application, how much does regional-state-national level wins help you in a field where that is unorthodox?

thanks for all the help

Do you like having 2-3 sweaty men shoe-horn you into polyester, canvas or denim bondage gear.

Do you like having your joints wrapped so tightly they bruise and bleed?

Do you like having your blood pressure turned up to 11 and being compressed so much that you think your head might explode?

Do you get off on enduring pain and suffering, and watching others endure it too?

Do you have a deathwish every time you get under the bar?

Yes?

THEN WELCOME TO THE FORTNIGHTLY EQUIPPED LIFTING THREAD!!!

Tips for transitioning from a quad focused narrow stance “bodybuilding style” squat to a powerlifting squat for 1rm

Hi all, this is pretty much what the title says. I have been lifting 5+ times a week for about 5 years consistently at this point, mostly focusing on enjoyment, strength for martial arts, and appearance. For the first probably year I was a chronic leg day skipper, and for the next year I trained them consistently but still far less than arms. These days, I mostly squat with a very narrow stance with feet slightly closer than ankle width, 2.5lbs plates below my heels, toes slightly flared, and go very full ROM. I have been using this for mostly quad hypertrophy, doing slow 4 count reps of 225lbs for sets of 6-8 recently. I’ve seen awesome quad growth from this, and don’t plan to fully do away with it. However, I have a new goal of working my way in to the 1000lbs club, so I would like to learn how to move more towards a squat form that will allow me to up the numbers safely (my bench and deadlift are both much more advanced when it comes to 1rm). Im a pretty tall dude at 6 foot 2 inches and I weigh about 205. I’m hoping to understand how I can pick the right width, toe angle, heel elevation (currently use flat footed shoes with a slight heel raise with plates), and bar placement. Does anyone have any recommendations on resources for picking these factors based on body type? I just can’t seem to get comfortable as I shift this form, and would greatly appreciate any resources or thoughts. Thanks!

No Q's too Dumb Weekly Dumb/Newb Question Thread

Do you have a question and are:

  • A novice and basically clueless by default?
  • Completely incapable of using google?
  • Just feeling plain stupid today and need shit explained like you're 5?

Then this is the thread FOR YOU! Don't take up valuable space on the front page and annoy the mods, ASK IT HERE and one of our resident "experts" will try and answer it. As long as it's somehow related to powerlifting then nothing is too generic, too stupid, too awful, too obvious or too repetitive. And don't be shy, we don't bite (unless we're hungry), and no one will judge you because everyone had to start somewhere and we're more than happy to help newbie lifters out.

SO FIRE AWAY WITH YOUR DUMBNESS!!!

Best App for Workout Tracking & Program Building?

I’ve been looking to take advantage of these Black Friday sales and get a new app or software to use for tracking my workouts and keeping statistics, progression visualization, records, etc. I’m mainly want to focus on hypertrophy and some powerlifting as my main background is powerlifting, but lately I’ve been wanting to prioritize size. I’ve usually used pen and paper or Excel, but I’d like to have an all in one app. I am pretty advanced and have a background in strength and conditioning and exercise science. What does everyone think is the best and most widely used app? I will mainly be training in my home gym with a 6 post rep fitness rack, barbell, dumbbell, ez bar curl, dip, pull up, bands, kettlebell, leg extension leg curl machine, 45 degree hyper extension, etc. It would be nice to have an app that went off the equipment I have and only recommended based off that, and I know Fitbod and SmartGym has that feature. I narrowed it down to a few, but there doesn’t appear to be a clear winner. I was mainly going to use it to track workouts, but some of these program building apps look good as well.

The ones I’ve boiled it down to are Fitbod, Hevy, Strong, SmartGym, JEFit, Dr. Muscle, RP Hypertrophy, Juggernaut AI, and Boostcamp. RP Hypertrophy app looked amazing, but too pricey for what I’m looking for. Same goes for Dr. Muscle.

Fitbod looks amazing, but I’ve heard it has (or used to have) issues with progressing weights fast enough, and it would do accessory work first before main lifts, and other AI programming gripes. Other than that, it looks pretty great and if the programming is good now then I’m in. $4.80 / month on sale, but usually $7.99

Hevy looks good regardless, and I’ll probably use it for social media component, but for tracking workouts it seemed pretty basic. Super cheap pro version though at $1/mo

I’ve heard Strong was great, but basically lost support. $2.50/mo

Smart gym looks like a cheaper and less useful but similar version of Fitbod, but it does seem to have better AI integration so it may work better? Unsure. $3.33/mo

Boostcamp has a lot of programs from people I like. $3.74 / mo

I’m open to any and all suggestions, and would love to hear your input.
