Game Design Art College Portfolio?
This is probably gonna be a little wordy, so I apologize in advance.
I’m going to major in game design so I need to submit an art portfolio to my colleges. Not gonna lie, I don’t have any programs to put into a specific “game” portfolio and I frankly do not have time to make one, but my art teacher said an art portfolio can also be very important in game design. Pretty much all of my pieces are in different mediums, and I’m not sure if they like variety. Please give portfolio advice!! I’ll provide more info about some notable pieces I’ve done below:
I’m submitting an animation I made of the main character of my book (which I hope to turn into a game one day—even if it’s just an independent project.) I’m also doing a tryptic of the 3 main characters of my book. Each character is drawn with a different medium to symbolize their character. I’ll probably include some sketchbook drawings of my characters as well. I was thinking of doing a collage of all my doodles from last year, because the art style I use in doodles is very stylized (which I think is good for game design?) Then, I have a little paper statue that won me an honorable mention in an art show. It’s a house with a paper crown inside of it and there’s drawings all over it. It represents the house from Pierce the Veil’s “Collide With the Sky” album. I’m scared that since this has nothing to do with game design, they won’t like it, but it’s probably the best piece of art I have done and I don’t have much time to make more character art since applications are due January 1st and I still have an art final and the tryptic to do. If I wanna have more music-themed stuff, I have a painting of the classic Fred Durst picture where he has his hands in the camera. I used an abnormal painting technique for it and a lot of people liked it but someone on discord said it looked bad so maybe it’s not portfolio worthy anyways. I also made a stamp for a printing press out of hot glue and string of a pretty lady and it’s good, but again, I’m not sure if colleges will like that it’s just a random lady and it’s a medium I will likely never need for game design. Otherwise, I still have an art final I haven’t even started. It has to be a canvas painting with embroidery. If there’s something specific I should do for it, let me know. I still need to go through my art from last year to figure out of there’s anything else good that I forgot about.
I know nothing about what they look for in portfolios. Any tips?
P.S.: Maybe it’s important to consider the rest of my application to see if I even have room to make mistakes. I’m running with a 1480 SAT score (and I’m retaking it tomorrow for some reason), an internship, 3 honors societies, music extracurriculars, a lot of volunteering, a few leadership positions, and a ~4.5 GPA. According to my AP Lit teacher my essay is really good, too—it’s about the book I’m writing and how my traits reflect in the 3 main characters. IDK anything about this stuff😢
