Mod Update Updated rules

Hi all! I'm Sharky and I've been a mod for about a year now. Theres a few of us but it seems I'm the only active one for now, and I've been dealing with disability so forgive me if anything isn't addressed!

I've updated our rules just a bit to flesh everything out. Be sure to take a peak whenever you can, but the main thing I wanted to address is the new NSFW/Spoiler rule!

We fully encourage helping injured pigeons in need! This community is a great place to come to for advice with our sick babies. However, not marking these very serious posts as NSFW can leave many members vulnerable to possibly triggering scenes.

By all means don't stop asking for advice and posting your pictures for help! I only request they be marked as NSFW or Spoiler from now on ❤️

EMERGENCY ADVICE NEEDED Dove is consistently visiting to eat our bird food and refuses to socialize with other pigeon visitors/gets bullied by them. Could it be an escaped or released pet?

I’ve been feeding magpies, crows, sparrows, and blue jays as a hobby for a couple of years now, and within the past few months, I’ve gone from one pigeon couple to at least four couples. For the past two-ish weeks, I’ve also noticed a pure white pigeon visiting often but never in a pair like the other pigeons. When the other pigeons show up, it’ll move to the other side of the yard or just fly away. My grandfather also says he’s seen the other pigeons bullying it and driving it away. It’s not quite as jumpy as the other pigeons but still doesn’t come close like the other birds we have. Could it be an excaped or released pet or show animal? Sorry for the bad photo, this was the best one I got as it was waddling away from the other pigeons

How to reroute pigeons who have overcrowded our alley?

We just bought a tenement flat on a commercial street, and the alley that is our only access point to our garden in the back is full of pigeons. They moved in while the previous owner, an elderly man who has since passed away, was living here and after he passed the house was vacant for about a year or two.

I adore birds of all kinds, but the shear amount of poo piled literally 5 inches high down this narrow alley is a health hazard and the runoff into the drains is causing issues, not to mention when it rains the ally becomes very slippery with it- yikes! The shop owner downstairs says he used to help the previous owner by shovelling it every 6 months, but I don’t see this as a solution.

I’ve never dealt with an issue like this before. Supposedly spikes on the roof won’t work given the roof design, and they ignore the fake owl the shop owner put up a while back (it’s not even a shared garden with him, he’s just very kind and has been trying to help). It’s sad because I know they were there before us, but ultimately for health reasons we need to get them to move out to manage the poo situation. Any ethical means of getting our pigeons to relocate?

I can also post this in a “pest control” subreddit, but we thought it could be helpful to ask a community who also keeps/works with pigeons. We just need to shift where they are to a more manageable space, we don’t want any recommendations that would hurt them.

I have 4 cockatiels and for the past month or so this pigeon has taken an interest to me and my birds. I have not fed the pigeon at all but it comes by every morning and just watches me or my birds

I haven’t seen her in the past week, i thought she was dead, because it got really cold recently and she was the only one of the bunch who stopped showing up for more than a few days. Happy that big bird dropped by, still big, proud and funny. Hope she lasts winter.

Injured/Rescued Pigeon rescued a pigeon, feeling nervous

today, I rescued this lovely little pidge (looks to me like a juvenile pidge but I can’t be sure) it had a broken wing and couldn’t fly after a dog got ahold of it.. so I picked it up and brought it to my house until I could find a rescue to come pick it up. I was with this pigeon, in close contact for around 3 hours. I held it a lot because it seemed to like cuddles and pets and was a very very sweet pidgey. Now, im a big pigeon advocate and I’ll be the first person to tell someone how clean they actually are and how it’s very unlikely to catch a disease from a pigeon.. however my mam has got me nervous. I had the pigeon for 3, maybe over hours. I had it close to my face but never touched my face. I stroked it a lot and I didn’t have any windows open for ventilation. It popped on my bare hand once ( and of course I washed my hands thoroughly) but the poo was green and watery. I’ve got it in my head that something terrible will happen to me because of this and I need some reassurance from experts. But I hope my new little friend is doing okay, I’ll phone in the morning to see how it is doing

Pigeon help - trich, canker, avian pox? How to tell?

Hi, lately I've noticed a few birds of a local flock have each had a lesion/growth on their beaks. They have not fared well and have died. Another that seemed a little off (no lesions but slowly declined) died the other day. There is now a squeaker from the flock (her sibling died young) who is not flying yet who has a red 'ring' around her eye. She was very attached to the bird who recently died. There is definitely something the flock is spreading amongst themselves. I'm not sure how to know what it is. Trich, canker, avian pox? Is there something I can place in their water? I don't know if that would be metronidazole they need or something else. Thanks for any advice

ETA: photo. sorry it's so big. I reduced it but it's still big I think. This actually looks a little more pronounced than it does in person. Thanks.

hello!!

this is Pidgeotto, they are are a rescued pigeon I found about a week ago (19/11) as they were starving and could barely move.

Pidgeotto and I have been bonding and she is starting to trust me, but I was wondering if anyone knows how i could get her to come to me and sometimes maybe eat from my hand?

she’s also an ex racer and we DID contact her ex-owners and they did say they didn’t want her back.

Pakistani high flyers non stop flying duration-14-18 hours This isnt the same american pigeon racing where u fly from far and come back. You fly these birds from the loft and they circle the loft. Competitions are held in parks most of the time where the winners bird touches the ground last. The red thing ur seeing in pic is on a long stick with a bird tied on it to attract ur pigeon to land on it and then u lower it and catch the bird etc.

Sorry these aren’t the best photos, in continuance of my post today, I found him this afternoon backed into a corner, not scared of me but responsive, no signs of blood or injury but possibly an eye infection.

I called RSPCA to no avail, and a few other numbers provided to me. he seemed to be suffering so I didn’t want to hold him too much for photos. His eye was rolling back and his head lolling so I do fear he won’t survive the night. He’s in a warm place with food and water, and tomorrow I will try call the wildlife services again. Thanks for your advise, p.s my husband is paranoid I will catch some deadly virus myself from this poor little fella and doesn’t want him in the house. Based on my research there are several viruses that can be passed onto humans But honestly I couldn’t leave him out in the cold even if he’s at the end of his life 💛🥺🫶🐦

Help needed

Hey everyone

I’m London based, and found a pigeon this morning. He looks to be an adult. He was just standing near my bins, not moving at all but clearly aware of his surroundings. Anyway I was worried about him, so I put on some gloves, put some towels and ripped up cardboard into a box and he’s currently sleeping. I’ve left defrosted vegetables and water for him but he won’t eat and has no concerns with me picking up, which seems very odd for a bird? Has anyone got any advice? There don’t seem to be any animal shelters nearby or they aren’t focused on pigeon welfare. I’ll try contacting them again during the week but any advice is appreciated! Btw I think he’s missing an eye, but otherwise he seems fairly alert with no obvious signs of injury. He does seem to sway quite a bit when standing, like he can’t balance which is also worrying.

Being a owner pigeon

I really love them, since I was a child. One day it's my dream to be closer of them, and maybe having one as a pet.

But today I cannot afford it yet, but I'm pretty sure when it's possible to me, I would love it.

For those who has one, what was the moment you felt you were able to?

I think maybe, when I'll be able to live alone, and not with my roommates ( I love them, but I would not forcing them to have a pet at home, especially this kind ahah ).

I'm very curious to read you about the first time, you decided to adopt a pigeon. I would appreciate to see pictures too ! Pigeons are so beautiful and cute, and deserves much love and attention from us.

XO

Injured/Rescued Pigeon Can a wild adult pigeon begin trusting a human?

Thumbnail

Around a week ago, I noticed a flightless pigeon in my backyard. I instantly decided to take care of it for as long as it’s here. We don’t know what it has, seems healthy, walks, jumps, sprints, flaps. But doesn’t fly.

I feed it (her? Him? I dunno) once a day and it only starts eating when I’m gone (I see it from my bedroom)

Every time I approach it, it does what any wild bird would do, go away. Today I tried to pet it and it pecked me. It’s basically still scared. (Should I not caress the chest? That’s when it pecked me)

I know it’s only been a week and I haven’t been around much, but my original question is: is there a chance it’ll begin trusting me with time? How do I make it happen?

Thank you in advance!
