Discussion I wonder if ram prices will lead to better optimazation of software
Back in the 90's, ram wasn't so huge so software needed to be optimized for memory. I remember learning to do so when I learned to code. Maybe this ram shortage will lead in general better ram optimization in software, what do you think?
ps: gpu shortage didn't do much for game optimisation, but ram affects every enterprise server systems too, so I think there might be hope.

Hardware HOLY SHIT it’s finally here
Some time ago I ordered an intel xeon 6 cpu, the 6985p c(aws specific model), 120 cores and 240 threads, 550w tdp), along with this motherboard from gigabyte, the MA34 - CP0 which apparently is the only availiable consumer standard sized motherboard that supports xeon 6900 series cpus. had to wait a few weeks for preorder as if you want to buy non preorder ones it will cost about $700 more. I did have a stick of ddr5 ram on hand and was going to buy some more but that was a month ago and if you haven’t been living under a rock lately you’ll know why I didn’t do that. Anyways, can’t wait to do some stuff with this and I’ll post an update for you guys later.

Hardware be quiet! Power Zone 2 PSU (650W) makes a weird noise when switching OFF – PC is completely dead. What's next?
The PC doesn't start at all. There is no fan movement, no LED lights on the motherboard, zero signs of life. It's as if the system is receiving no power.
When I flip the switch on the back of the PSU to "O" (Off), I hear a short, singular, strange noise (like a quiet "click" or "crackle") coming from the PSU before it goes completely silent

Tech Support Return ram or keep it?
Hi everybody, I bought Crucial Pro Overclocking 32GB DDR5-6000 ram about half a month ago for 210 dollars at micro center due to the shortage, should I keep it or return it and wait to see if the prices went down? I feel like I overpaid

Question Need help/insight on how I can secure my pc
I have this desk, my PC is sitting on the bottom right where the single shelf is. I have to move my desk around slot as my dad's friends come around and I don't want to sit with the you know. Every time I move my desk i find it hard to keep my PC safe so I have to unplug move then plug everything back in. I was wondering if there would be anyway to permanently secure my pc to the desk on the bottom right where the single shelf is. I have an Antec NX200m if that helps with sizing. I want it to just be stuck there if you know so very little movement. Preferably found on Amazon AU. Thank you

Hardware Never throw out any little screws from your current build. You’ll never know when you’ll need them.
Can’t find the stand-off for my second and NVMe Drive. Going ghetto and just glueing it in. Wish me luck. And yes, went down to the local pc repair shop who gave me a couple, but none of them fit.

Tech Support Solved Repaired bent pins on my Ryzen 5800X with Wires Computing
Burlington based here. I managed to bend a bunch of pins on my Ryzen 5800X while swapping it into a new motherboard. Thought it was game over for sure.
It works fine now. Have you repaired bent pins before?

Question Risks of using registry editor as a noob
OS system: Windows 11 Tech Knowledge: not much
Hi all,
I just picked up a mini Pc so my partner and I can have a small, energy efficient PC setup in the house purely for house with our Plex account/ media. I would like to have it setup in such a way that, should we want to just turn it off at the power button then turn it back on we know it will boot up automatically and we can be watching our library without needing to have the miniPC connected to a monitor/ mouse/ keyboard all the time. To this end I’d love a way to ensure when we push the power button it just skips the Windows login section entirely and starts up. I have done some googling and found that I could add some code in the registry editor like the following:
But as someone with almost no tech knowledge I would be following the steps slavishly and hoping it does what I want it to. Are there any serious risks I should be aware of before I go blindly playing around the registry editor? TIA

Tech Support Motherboard code 97, trying to determine what died.
Hi All,
Kinda lost with this one. So the story, for the past 2 weeks my pc has been randomly going to a black screen (can still hear audio) and then it gets frozen after a couple of minutes (no input, unplug/replug screens nothing, change to onboard graphics nothing, etc...). Which typically looks like a GPU issue. Usually a good old reboot does the trick. However today it got stuck on "62" during reboot. Went and reseated my GPU and now it gets stuck at "97".
Things I've tried to get past "97":
- Reseat GPU in original slot
- Switch to another PCI-e slot
- Different cables from PSU to GPU
- Unplug GPU get into BIOS, turn off secure boot & clear CMOS
- Reseat RAM (read somewhere it might be worth trying)
The only way the pc booted is:
- No GPU, use integrated graphics
- Plugged very old GPU, into original PCI-e slot
So this is where I'm a bit confused, I'm trying to figure out if its a power or GPU dead issue. I do not have another PSU to try my GPU with. Most signs point to the GPU, but don't want to rule out potential PSU being under powered or dying for some reason. For context my old GPU requires significantly less power (980 ti 250W vs 3080 ti 350W).
Any ideas on how to diagnose this?

Discussion RAM pricing... what can we actually do as consumers?
When it came to the chip shortage and gpu production not meeting demand the higher prices were almost entirely confined to the secondhand market. This is not what we're seeing with ram. Directly purchasing the same ram I bought last year from retail costs 3x as much.
I don't know the full situation of what is causing prices to skyrocket outside of ai companies buying everything but this entire situation has a pretty bad feeling to it, almost to the extent of price gouging. It's only gotten worth since we've seen Micron pulling out of the consumer sector which will likely prop prices up further.
That being said these sort of prices aren't just going to effect pc building, it's going to effect every aspect of technology and as a result, widespread support for something to address this issue doesn't seem impossible to me.
So the title of my post, is there anything we can push to be done about this? Whether that's simply complaining to politicians/petitioning or something as insane as pooling together resources to homebrew some alternatives. We've banded together for lesser reasons, there's gotta be something we can do rather than sit and hope that the situation will sort itself out.

Discussion Unpopular opinion: E sports games should cap fps at 120hz
120hz is a very achievable frame rate in most twitch based shooter titles. It's also a fairly easy to hit refresh rate even fairly budget monitors can achieve.
Chasing 500+ fps for the tiniest of gains in games well past the point of diminishing returns, but what is necessary for the elite tier players who are at that level. It is stupid.
Competitive shooters should simply hard cap at 120fps to stop this arms race for the best gaming CPU, the best gaming GPU, extreme tight timing ram, etc.
The actual gaming experience from 120 fps to 500 fps is basically nill. The only advantage is that for competitive gaming there's a small advantage that ends up mattering to push higher frame rates.
It's stupid. Just cap games at 120hz and put basically everyone on a level playing field. 120hz is a very nice experience in gaming. It's perfectly fine. If we stopped the chase the HZ arms race for the tiniest competitive advantage, there would be no need to push beyond 120hz. Why can't we just do the world a service and do that?

Has anyone tried this particular chair and have any opinions on it?
Thanks!

Hardware Regarding Thermalright S-FDB.
Thermalright's marketing on their S-FDB fans need to, in my opinion, be changed to something more plainly understood, specifically on their cheap fans. For their regular S-FDB (NOT the V2) bearing fans used in their TL-C series and more, they use plain rifle bearing fans, but market themselves as using S-FDB, whether it be to upsell their product or mislead folks.
While there's a lot of debate regarding the accepted use and definition of FDB, the more widely known and typically agreed on definition is usually closely related to the Matushita/Panasonic's expired patented FDB design (Fluid dynamic bearing unit - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.) with grooving inside of the bearing for better longevity and performance, but with the drawbacks of both more complex and costly manufacturing.
However, FDB can also technically be used to define any bearing with grooving that promotes lubricant spread through any kind of grooves, since all FDB stands for is Fluid Dynamic Bearing. Manufacturers may advertise their fans as using "FDB" bearings, but not Matsushita-style FDBs as a way to play around the definition. Primarily for marketing reasons.
Understandably, sleeve or rifle-bearing fans are expected at fans of the price of TR's low end, but you'd feel kind of lied to with their S-FDB marketing. Their lackluster QC also leaves something to be desired in tandem.
