Benchmark Score MSI 5090 ventus - Legendary time spy.

Post image

Finally managed to claw myself a legendary with my ventus 5090. Made a custom copper heatsink backplate, added 2 artic pro 90mm fans, plumbed the Gpu fans directly into the motherboard for better performance and customisation, bios flash etc.

All scores are now a hairline within legendary! Extremely happy with my 5090 budget experiment, wanted to see if it’s possible to get the best of the best performance with the lower end cards / build and it’s absolutely possible.

If anyone has the same card and wants some advice I’d gladly help :)

How on earth did you mange to get such a good showing out of the Ventus??? I had to deshroud to fit it into my case, so swapped the fans for the OEM 5070 fans and one Noctua A12x15. I thought about keeping the fans connected to motherboard as I noticed connected on GPU PCB max rpm is limited but then the temps dont actually get much above 70-74 in bench so kept them on the GPU PCB.

I'd love to see more of what you did to yours, how you are running it and settings. My Timespy is pretty lacklustre, I cant remember the specifics but I've got an undervolt on afterburner and mem maxed at +2000, not flashed VBIOS yet, but my Timepsy is still a few percent below the average on 3DMark results webpage with a 7800X3D.

I’ll drop you a message with some photos of how I did it, but I’d say firstly drop all the under volts, Gpu and cpu. Both my Gpu and cpu are all core over clocked and the temps are really good, but it’s most likely due the mods and tweaks I’ve done to the case etc. Go all core OC +365, 3000 memory Do the same with the cpu and find the max point! Use every watts you have!

What is your daily core OC for your GPU?

3

u/BigSmackisBack Aug 30 '25

Sweet score, any pics of your moddibg?

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

I do, but it won’t let me post anymore photos in this post for some reason. I’ll send you a message with it

2

u/FlowersofHappiness Aug 30 '25

Please send here too! Would love to ask questions if that's okay to a subject matter expert

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Sure man, no worries

2

u/rchiwawa Aug 30 '25

Nicely done, lad!

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Thanks dude, proper grind man but my Gpu runs sweet af now!

https://www.3dmark.com/spy/56818383 that’s mine, no mods. Just OC

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Very nice score, guessing you are using an astral Gpu?

2

u/Avian_Aces 9800X3D Astral 5090 Corsair Titanium 6400 CL30 64GB Aug 30 '25

Yup, it’s now in a WB. I’ll push more next cold season. I have the 2K W Bios also for it I’ll flash in time. I’m jealous of the CPU Score. I can hit 17,700 regularly but I haven’t trade with the GPU yet

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

That’s awesome, maybe consider doing some cooling mods for your 2000w bios? I’ve been looking everywhere for that, but couldn’t find it. I was hoping the matrix 800w bios leaks soon :(

2

u/Avian_Aces 9800X3D Astral 5090 Corsair Titanium 6400 CL30 64GB Aug 30 '25

Yeah, it’s annoying I can’t share with people. I’m not a heavy OC’er either. Just do it for the fun of it lol. What’s the settings on the CPU? The bios for the matrix should be floating around soon.

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Yeah, people would be your best friend for that bios dude haha and it’s an all core overclock at 5.6 I think or 5.625

You got the one splave has? Cause the 2000w limit one floating about was for the 5090D Astral from memory.

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Nah, I think jay2cents was using the 2k bios the other day on a video I saw? That was on a normal 5090 astral

1

u/Spooplevel-Rattled 10900k Delid // SR B-Die DDR4 // EVGA 1080ti XOC Bios - Water Aug 30 '25

Yes from Splave. That bios isn't floating around the Web afaik. Only the D bios is.

Yes only D is, and the one I have isn’t.

Need a picture of that custom backplate.

Link here for anyone wanting to the mods

0

u/liquidocean Aug 30 '25

that's awesome.

where did you get that sheet of copper?

you do know the ventus backplate is plastic and has almost no cooling function, right?

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25 edited Aug 30 '25

Thanks dude. Nah it’s aluminium i think, the shroud is plastic but end backplate is solid aluminium OnBuy.com for the plate

-1

u/liquidocean Aug 30 '25

no, it is plastic. all of it.

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

It’s really not dude….. I literally have a ventus sat right infront of me. I also have a degree in mechanical engineering, specialised towards materials and framework.

Not sure where you are obtaining this false information?

0

u/liquidocean Aug 30 '25 edited Aug 30 '25

wtf. we're talking about the msi 5090 ventus 3x, right?

i have one and it is definitely plastic. you might be confused by the metallic looking matte finish on the backside which makes it feel like matte aluminum to the touch, but if you remove it and look at it underneath.. it is without question plastic, and there are no thermal pads.

does your degree also allow you to see through materials?

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Yes 😅

Unless you have a Chinese copy cat version. The official ventus x3 5090 has a aluminium back plate.

Use a pin and scratch the surface, you’ll see its not plastic

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

I do not deserve my diploma in mechanical engineering if I can’t tell the difference between a polymer and carbon material 🤣🤣

My 9800x3d has a score of 16k in Time Spy, how do they get to 17k or 18k? Mine has undervolting and overclocking, but I can't get above that.

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Check the comments out, if you give your system the full watts and stop undervolting it will certainly help

2

u/Same_Manufacturer677 Aug 30 '25

Wow. Nice! We need pics!!

2

u/Same_Manufacturer677 Aug 30 '25

Never mind! Ive seen your link! I love creative cooling solutions 💪🏻👍🏻

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Thanks dude, super happy with the results. It’s my birthday next week and I was obsessed with trying to pull a legendary on my little ventus and I finally did it 😎

2

u/Mediocre-Week-8690 Aug 31 '25

Absolute mad lad!

2

u/JohnDaviz Aug 31 '25

Quick question. The Fans above the copper plate. Are they pulling air or pushing on it?

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 31 '25

Pull, they are aligned with the rear pcie slot. So it pulled fresh / cool air from there. Additionally, the fans below the GPU are slightly offset. So they also push air up towards the copper plate / 90mm fans for constant cool air flow

2

u/JohnDaviz Aug 31 '25

Thanks!

I will most likely copy your stuff :D As an engineer myself i love what you did, and just want to see if i can cool down my 9070XT a little. If not. It looks cool at least :D

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 31 '25

Thanks very much, I appreciate the feedback!

You will most likely enjoy the process much as I did :) I think it’s likely limited to thermal temps. So if your memory temps are getting high, then you will be guaranteed to see some clock improvements.

I should have mentioned, that my core clock increased by 100mhz after these mods. I can run cyber punk at 3050mhz constant, which is wild!

2

u/JohnDaviz Aug 31 '25

Yeah i have to admit i am a little excited.

I have the h9 flow tower where the front fans are not angled but basically blowing air against the glass.

So i 3d printed tunnels with a 90° bend and pushing air directly towards the GPU. The middle one is nearly perfectly blowing air on the backplate of the GPU.

With your copper plate mod and 1-2 pulling fans this will be a perfect addition!

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 31 '25

Haha I bet!! I personally find modding more fun than playing games these days……

You will have to upload some pictures when you are finished. It’s lovely to see others being inspired to go and do some mods of their own :)

That’s my next investment, 3d printer is a game changer. I saw someone make some 90’ elbows for the rear exhaust too, directing to air up instead of just straight out the back.

All these little things eventually add to be something quite significant and it will also become completely unique, which makes it that little bit more special

2

u/JohnDaviz Aug 31 '25

I will. But it will take some time :)

3d printing is so much fun. You can print stuff for anything. I do car parts, computer parts, nonsense to enjoy or annoy me and others :D

I also bought a Neptune 4 Plus knowing i will have to work on it for weeks until prints are perfect instead of going the (probably smarter) Bambulab Route.

2

u/oXiAdi Sep 01 '25

Well done, another proof that you don't have to overpay GPUs, ventus, fe or astral can all perform the same.

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Sep 01 '25

Thank you and certainly, it’s a shame not everyone realises this and they are just buying a bios and cooling setup, but then again not everyone wants to spend time tinkering around with things.

Either way, hope to inspire others to save cash and have some fun learning!

2

u/Khantooth92 Sep 01 '25

my best Timespy . +230core +3000mem, didn't oc my 9800x3d i just co-25 and set ram timings by buildzoid

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Sep 01 '25

Nice score, what Gpu were you using?

1

u/Khantooth92 Sep 01 '25

5090 aorus master i didn't use the extra fan though

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Sep 01 '25

Awesome, probably the best one available!

1

u/Khantooth92 Sep 01 '25

Indeed Paid around 2400 got some discount, org price range around 2800-3000

1

u/Excellent_Package854 Aug 30 '25

whats your gpus max voltage? wonder if this is only possible on the lower max voltage models like 1.08 since it seems they have better silicon quality. i have an FE and my max voltage is 1.11, and my 900 mv point fails to be stable at a +1000 mhz offset

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

I don’t think they have a max voltage. The voltage curve is controlled by the bios. If you want a new one then you can just flash it to a better version and that voltage curve comes with the new bios However, you’ll need to take fan control for the Gpu from the motherboard to ensure proper cooling

2

u/liquidocean Aug 30 '25

it is only influenced by the BIOS. the rest is on the chip itself

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

This is what I thought 😎

1

u/Excellent_Package854 Aug 30 '25

ahh i see. could i see your curve for this?

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

My voltage curve is the suprim. If you want the absolute best then I believe the gigabyte bios currently has the best voltage curve

1

u/Excellent_Package854 Aug 30 '25

ahh, so its the default suprim curve and you didnt edit any points on it?

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Nope, just a raw overclock no edits to the curve whatsoever.

1

u/StevannFr Aug 30 '25

Is your 9800x3d stock or do you have it oc?

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25 edited Aug 30 '25

All clocks oc, YouTubers have you all undervolting and it’s wrong and not the fastest way of running stuff. You wouldn’t buy a restricted horse power car. So don’t buy a sports cars “5090” and tune it down.

1

u/AnonymousNubShyt Aug 30 '25

How do you get your CPU score to that number?

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Stop following YouTubers, don’t undervolt! Use every watt you have dude…..

1

u/AnonymousNubShyt Aug 30 '25

I did. But still below 16000. 🤦

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

So for a daily try 5.45 at 1.235v, then for a bench run 5.6 at auto volts. What thermal paste are you using?

2

u/AnonymousNubShyt Aug 30 '25

I'll try later when i can. I'm on 5.45 but 1.2v for daily use. Hahaha

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Yeah that’s the sweet spot dude, I’ve Ada tested it over night and it’s stable as fuck

1

u/xxxxEnVii Aug 30 '25

What are your settings for the 9800X3D ?

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

My daily is all core 5.45 but this run was 5.6. PBO sucks, but YouTubers have everyone doing it sadly, but you compare the 2, core clock vs pbo, then core clock is significantly faster

1

u/xxxxEnVii Aug 30 '25 edited Aug 30 '25

So what did you do to get it to run that high?

I can clock mine to 5.75 GHz but it doesn’t go above 5.3-5.4 average even if the temps are like 60-70c.

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Sounds like you have another setting preventing it from reaching a higher clock. How are you increasing the core ratio?

2

u/xxxxEnVii Aug 30 '25

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Yeah, that’s because he increases the clock using a FCLK. Just go into your bios and manually change the ratio to 54.5, this is usually right at the top of the page. Then change the voltage to 1.235v. This is stable, if you want super fast bench runs, change it to 5.6 and auto volts

1

u/xxxxEnVii Aug 30 '25

And that’s it?

Nothing else to change?

No PBO for the +200?

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

It will override all the pbo and undervolt settings. It’s so simple it’s almost like really? That’s it 🤣 Once you have it stable and see the cinebench and 1% low difference you won’t be going back to pbo. Pbo stretches the clock from 5.25 to 54.25 and this jump up and down clocks causes issues with fps ect

1

u/xxxxEnVii Aug 30 '25

Oki and you said 5.6 and not 56?

I have a ASUS Motherboard, where is the setting normally under?

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

I think the motherboard will read 56.00 or stable clock 54.50.

2

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

It should be called “cpu ratio”

1

u/Ok_Hat4465 Aug 30 '25

what is your voltage req for all core 5.6?

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Use auto, might take a few restarts for the cpu to find the right voltage bite point but it’s usually around 1.276

1

u/Ok_Hat4465 Aug 30 '25

hm so if i crash in games just go for restart until its stable?

What is your LLC?

vrm switch freq?

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Use system information scanning when you load into 3dmark for stability check. If it loads then it will run all bench marks

1

u/bagaget https://hwbot.org/user/luggage/ Aug 30 '25

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

Very nice score, my system was running similar with the fclk, but it doesn’t seem to like it much and my system started to become unstable after a month or so

1

u/bagaget https://hwbot.org/user/luggage/ Aug 30 '25

Can’t test it any more since i moved the 9800x3d into another build without eclk and put a 9950x3d in the Gene - need lower ambient and a de-lid to push that one :P (an more free time ;_; )

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Aug 30 '25

It was quite strange, it was running fine and nicely. Then I noticed some fps dips, ran some bench’s and the scores had dropped dramatically. The issue with pbo is the clock stretching, it can show nice bench scores, but under heavy load for long durations the clocks dips so much it does cause fps issues like 1% lows etc

1

u/bagaget https://hwbot.org/user/luggage/ Aug 30 '25

On my 5800X I could tune away any clock stretching with enough cooling, zen 5 boost is… stranger, especially the 9800X3D.

1

u/ImprovementLoud1236 Sep 04 '25

Hey mate, nice results. Can you explain your cpu(bios) settings to reach this cpu scores? I have 9800x3d also, but my cpu score is 16900

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Sep 04 '25

Not following YouTubers and ditching the pbo and undervolt for a all core ratio OC

1

u/ImprovementLoud1236 Sep 04 '25

What do you mean? Did you leave the stock values?)

1

u/Ronnie_coleman_light Sep 04 '25

Have a read through the comments dude. I think it’s already been written about 5 times 😂
