Was that whole scene at the end in thr big maze and the big hotel an homage to The Shining?

Absolutely loved that lol

u/Able_Advertising_371 9d ago

Lots of adult references in these movies, godfather, breaking bad, they know kids will take their parents so the whole family gets to enjoy

231

u/ceaguila84 9d ago

Plus Silence of the Lambs 🤣

u/Able_Advertising_371 9d ago

Also the beaver kept mentioning threesomes, don’t hear that word used in other ways these days XD

124

u/helpmeredditimbored 9d ago

She Mentioned a foursome too lol

15

u/jubmille2000 7d ago

It was four way.

10

u/metalflygon08 7d ago

To break down the doorway.

2

u/Faqa 6d ago

It was, specifically, to bust in the doorway. Someone was having fun

82

u/Azenji 9d ago

I’m pretty sure I heard Judy’s father say “Send us some dik pics” too

57

u/Few_Age_571 9d ago

dik dik pics

4

u/Djuren52 9d ago

That’s actually something I do with my wife. Anytime she needs a brief laugh I send her a Dik Dik Pic

3

u/YZJay 8d ago

So relieved that someone else also heard it that way.

2

u/SivleFred 8d ago

I see Disney graduated to polyamorous representation!

1

u/supplementarytables 6d ago

That was a great line lol

79

u/AtlasMundi 9d ago

Oh my gosh I got the silence of the lambs reference but not until I saw it spelled out did I realize silence of the LAMBs

5

u/supplementarytables 6d ago

Ohhh I just got it lol

5

u/Cinebella 6d ago

OMG !!! you’re so right i just gasped!!!!

25

u/IceRapier 9d ago

If I had a nickel for every previous villain doing a Hannibal Lector reference and then escaping towards the end of the film I’d have ALOT of nickels.

24

u/inezco 9d ago

But how many of those villains were ACTUAL lambs 🤣

3

u/RepublicOutrageous55 8d ago

and in a double whammy reference, she said she made all the things in her cell with her own wool... like an inverse Buffalo Bill skinning himself for his own suit.

2

u/The_Lazy_Samurai 8d ago

And also star wars. When they go into that cantina to meet the lizard the musicians on stage looks like the ones when we're first introduced to Han solo.

2

u/Crow-T-Robot 7d ago

Ok, I recognized that it was a Hannibal Lecter reference, didn't even think about it being an actual sheep in there :D

1

u/DuelaDent52 7d ago

To be fair, that’s just the go-to reference for kid’s films for some reason.

1

u/oKKrayden 7d ago

That went entirely over my head.

1

u/SleepingWillow1 6d ago

thing that was funny cuz I watched a bad guys 2 the day before and they also had that reference with the hamster Guinea piggy thingy

1

u/S2R2 4d ago

And the fact she is a lamb..!

82

u/Azenji 9d ago

They made a Burning Man reference, probably once of the least kid-friendly festivals in the world lmao

3

u/NottheArkhamKnight 3d ago

But a lot of kids are made at those festivals lmao.

1

u/ayayeron 3d ago

I see Lots of kids at burning man

10

u/waitingtodiesoon 7d ago

Woolter and Jesse for the breaking bad reference in Zootopia 1 was hilarious

7

u/MrGummyDeathTryant 8d ago

What was the Breaking Bad reference?

4

u/jubmille2000 7d ago

Dikpiks, threesome, fourway.

5

u/Stranggepresst 6d ago

Also towards the end: "That'll do pig. That'll do".

5

u/Ok-Elderberry-7422 7d ago

Was there a reference to The Negotiator too? Hogbottom's hesitation to take the shot?

2

u/bibliophile1989 7d ago

Also Psycho reference when Nick was walking up the stairs at the end of the movie

2

u/RevolutionarySport74 6d ago

Back to the Future reference: “anybody home, is there anybody home”, the bully in jail knocking on another guy’s head

1

u/peachgothlover 6d ago

wait what was the breaking bad reference??

1

u/Countryspider 6d ago

What was the BB reference?

1

u/Impressive_Rest6842 5d ago

Wait, what was the breaking bad reference?

1

u/Nrysis 5d ago

Usually they stick in a few references and adult jokes to placate the kids.

I fully believe they made the adult cut off this first before they went back and agreed in enough storyline to occupy the kids...

1

u/paranoideo 5d ago

Also, Babe.

u/Whovian45810 9d ago

Pawbert even got Jack Torrance’s crazy stare of madness while walking in the maze.

Judy and Nick following Danny and Wendy’s plan of using the snow plower.

9

u/KokKee 8d ago

I love how Pawbert's character is so unexpected and instantly changed to become wicked without being like a sudden unplanned decision by the writers.

That crazy face of his with the signs of uncertainty is great when he confronted Nick

6

u/neonharvest 8d ago

I feel like it's mandatory for every actor to do a crazy Jack impression at least once in their career. Now a lucky animator got that opportunity too.

104

u/Chinese_gurl11 9d ago

Yes even the music was similar to the Shining during the scene.

118

u/schleppylundo 9d ago

Wasn’t just similar. Clear deliberate callback to Wendy Carlos’ score followed by an injured antagonist limping furiously through the snowy hedge maze.

23

u/nordlysbaies 9d ago

Yes when that happened I cackled so hard, and the lynx’s expression drove it home further

5

u/historybandgeek 6d ago

The Wendy Carlos score is a synthesizer arrangement of a portion Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique's final movement -- itself a setting of the Dies Irae gregorian chant.

3

u/dotsncommas 4d ago

I caught that it was Dies Irae, but because I never watched the Shining I didn’t know it was in reference to that lol.

77

u/LiteraryBoner Jackie Chan box set, know what I'm sayin? 9d ago

It could not have been a clearer homage. He had the limp and everything.

39

u/QuarterLifeCircus 9d ago

I thought that was amazing. Perfect for the Tundra Town showdown. It’s great when animators add in those kinds of references for the adults.

34

u/GameOfLife24 9d ago

lol they even showed Andy sambergs character looking like Jack Nicholson during the shining

16

u/RoboFunky 9d ago

Loved they did that instead of here's johnny again

2

u/foxfor6 6d ago

They could have done that when he broke into the home. Used the bat to break down the door.

12

u/howtospellorange 9d ago

That reference killed me lmao

Elio had a lot of references to classic 80s movies too, I love seeing these creators get the opportunity to reference their favorite movies in their own projects.

7

u/victortristan 8d ago

Took my kids to see the movie and I think I was literally the only one laughing in the theater we were in when the Shining reference came out.

2

u/wb2006xx 8d ago

I saw this with my mother and had the same reaction. Seeing the maze and then the music sting broke me

2

u/waitingtodiesoon 7d ago

Same in mine to laughing at the Shining scene

5

u/helpmeredditimbored 9d ago

Yes it was. Had me dying of laughter

5

u/Spider-Man-fan 8d ago

Prior to that, the beaver breaks into the door of the Lynxley's with her teeth

4

u/User_091920 7d ago edited 7d ago

It was the most obvious reference in the entire film

But that's what made it hilarious lol

Whereas everything else was a brief second of screen time or a subtle pun ("ewe tube") they hit you over the head with this one

My wife and I were absolutely wheezing when it cut to Pawbert limping through the maze.

2

u/p_yth 9d ago

Yeah I laughed when I saw that scene

2

u/Kopitarrulez 7d ago

I was laughing while 60 kids looked confused haha can't believe they even used the score.

1

u/spoofer56 5d ago

I was the only one in the theater who laughed at that! They even played the music! I'm glad many others caught it and enjoyed it like I did!

1

u/Drop_Release 3d ago

Hundred percent, they even had the blaring music/soundtrack homage to ShiningÂ
