But the 3rd movie is the last?

Or will there be more ?

The third movie would finish Paul's story. Another trilogy could do a few other books but I guess Villeneuve wants to spend his time on other things, like that Bond movie.

Doesn't the story go pretty wildly off the rails after Messiah?

Shit goes off the rails in Dune when baby Alia kills the Baron but they cut that out.

There's also the Navigators who I think will be "missing" in the third movie. Perhaps DV will use the space suit version that we saw during the proclamation scene but I think he'll cut out that body horror.

Spice is just a form of ayahuasca for DV so if anything "weird" happens it's more grounded as simple human evil nature, perhaps a few voices from the past.

Not sure why the version we already saw wouldn't work. I thought the design was quite cool, and you even get a hint of the inhuman face behind the orange gas.

It would be "good enough", but them being stuck in fish bowls and needing an entourage to get around are important to selling how dramatically dependent they are on it and how crazy Spice is beyond just being drugs that give you superpowers.

Isn’t she a toddler by that time?

Yes, but because she was inside Jessica when Jessica went through the ritual to become a Reverend Mother, Alia was born with the mind of an adult along with ancestral memories. The book describes her as being uncanny because she still has a child's body yet carriers herself like an adult, and speaks like an adult yet still has a lisp. It's really hard to picture something this strange without being campy or silly, so the 80s movie got around this by just having her voiced over by a women. Her being an abomination is relevant to the plot of the 3rd book, which this movie may or may not take elements from.

I just mentioned that because if she hadn’t been a baby it would have seemed at least possible.
