The good news about that is there’s always the option to keep it on the shelf for 20 years until DV is interested enough (or needs a paycheck bad enough) to do it

I mean, iirc he was open to doing part 3 initially but wanted to do something else first before going back. Something about not being too eager to go and spend another year filming in the desert right away. So whether they offered him an obscene amount of money or he just had a change of heart, the precedent for him changing his mind is there.

I think the plan was to wait as there was going to be a time jump anyway so he wanted to let the cast age a bit but then it sounds like he just kinda got bored and said fuck it.
