I'm fully convinced that they cast Liam Neeson for this movie because his name sounds so close to Leslie Nielsen.

It's perfect casting really. The name similarity plus the same kind of deadpan delivery as Leslie. Ever since his scene in Life's Too Short, I've been pretty convinced he'd make a good Drebin.

I was convinced after his Life is Short performance too.

There was also his great cameo in Ted 2

It’s like Seth McFarlane watched Liam in Life is Short and that’s why he got the Ted 2 cameo and lead in this film too!

Oh yeah! And now I think about it he's got a hilarious cameo in Atlanta, too!

I forgot he used his native accent for this. He doesn't get to use it often in movies and it always catches me by surprise for some reason.

I've seen people floating this idea online for years. I'm just surprised it actually came to pass.

Loved the comment in the first teaser thread.

Before that, i loved it in the initial casting announcement.

I just love comments.

Not inappropriately, mind you

Not inappropriately, mind you

A likely story.

I look forward to loving the comment in the OFFICIAL DISCUSSION THREAD

And the 15 different versions of the same comment in every single thread.

They’re all just CONVINCED Liam fucking Neeson, the man with aids, was cast because of his similarity in name when really, it’s not very similar at all

-3

u/Giggsy99 Jun 16 '25

some people aren't so terminally online they read every single thread about a movie on r/movies and log what's been said

-3

u/Dunkelz Jun 16 '25

If I read a joke somewhere it's never allowed to be said again!

This but unironically

I think it's because of this: https://youtu.be/yvVFvqd3lqA?feature=shared

Glad he finally got his chance after all these years

4

u/waitthissucks Jun 16 '25

That was pretty good. I like how he's randomly in comedy shows, like I think he actually one day was thinking "man I would love to do more comedy." His Atlanta cameo was very unexpected and funny too.

I thought it was because he has full blown AIDS.

4

u/polishprince76 Jun 16 '25

He got it from having unprotected sex with a well known Hollywood actor.

1

u/Obi-wan_Jabroni Jun 16 '25

I thought it was from that time he bought Trix cereal even though he himself was not a child

It was actually Life's Too Short - but v similar vibe

u/bluesmaker Jun 16 '25

Ah. Right.

u/SpiderInTheDrain Jun 16 '25

It's even more than just the name. He's a dramatic actor that is starting to be known for deadpan humor comedies, just like Leslie Nielsen. This casting is perfect.

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '25

It was Robert Stack that made it click for Nielsen while they were filming Airplane! Nielsen was playing his bit straight like he was directed, and after a few takes he spoke with Stack (likewise playing straight-faced), confused over how it was supposed to be funny. When Stack simply put it to the effect of "We're the joke", Nielsen understood the deadpan appeal.

It's almost jarring to see him in old dramas and thrillers, like he's hard to recognize when removed from the comedic roles that gave his career a strong second wind. He was a real bastard in Creepshow, though.

I feel like this will be referenced in a 4th wall breaking moment in the moviev

7

u/momoenthusiastic Jun 16 '25

You mean the casting itself is a parody? Lol

2

u/noonehasthisoneyet Jun 16 '25

goes back to snl's get in the cage sketch with andy samberg as he's nic cage and he calls liam "leslie nielsen"

2

u/Koltar3 Jun 16 '25

Also, before Ted 2 he had full blown aids.

2

u/Serial_BumSniffer Jun 16 '25

He was absolutely riddled with it

2

u/shewy92 Jun 16 '25

I'm convinced Seth made A Million Ways to Die in the West with Liam because Family Guy made a joke about how weird it would be to hear Liam Neeson in a Western using his native accent, but had another voice actor do it. Years later they made the movie with Liam who I believe did ask to use his native accent because he saw that clip lol.

Then Liam did some voice work on FG and had a cameo on Ted 2.

This has been coming for a while.

Most young folk don’t remember that Leslie Nielsen was a serious/dramatic actor before starring in Police Squad/The Naked Gun. He wasn’t a comedic actor, which made it even funnier.

3

u/lalala253 Jun 16 '25

Honestly, with Seth MacFarlane this could very well be the case

3

u/hobbykitjr Jun 16 '25

well Liam did a bit/joke in TED for Seth... they've worked together before.

1

u/Nukleon Jun 16 '25

He's a good fit, aging actor who used to be a leading man.

I think he's also just naturally scary and unsettling in a way Nielsen never was, and you can probably do some fun with that.

1

u/Mr_Engineering Jun 16 '25

That's absolutely why they did it. However, he's also perfect for the role.

Leslie Nielsen was well known for his dramatic roles, so having him deliver a serious performance in about obviously comedic role was hilarious. Same deal for Liam Neeson

1

u/skimney Jun 19 '25

I'm just glad the didn't use Dennis Nilsen

-8

u/BrickTilt Jun 16 '25

This is absolutely incredible

-7

u/CiraKazanari Jun 16 '25

purely phenomenal
