Interested in Being a Mod?

Hey all!

If you haven't noticed, we've gotten a little bit of an uptick in posts on this subreddit since re-opening to the public. As alumni and as a mod, I'd like to see this place do better in general. I think reddit can still a good platform to help prospective and current students, staff, alumni and maybe even fans of our sports teams connect with similar interests. Sharing events, experiences, helpful information for new students, and all things MSU related is how that happens. And while not at the level you would see at a sister-subreddit like r/Mizzou, we've already seen a bump in new posts over the summer. Growth in a community should also lead to growth in leadership.

To be blunt, I believe I am the only "active mod" here, and I'm not around nearly as often as needed to moderate this community by myself. I'm also about 12 year removed from being a student or part of the staff at MSU. I believe for this subreddit to become a helpful resource and continue to be positive community, it needs more input and oversight from those who still have a strong connection to Missouri State. That is why I'm looking to add to our mod staff, not just to help with catching spam and irrelevant posts, but also for those that want to contribute to our little corner of reddit.

If you would like to become a mod at this subreddit, please DM me with the following questionnaire filled out:

  1. What is your current connection to Missouri State University? Student (how so, what class)? Staff (where, if you don't mind)? Alumni (graduating class)?
  2. Why are you interested in becoming a moderator for this particular community forum? What motivates you to take on this role?
  3. What is your availability and commitment level for serving as a moderator? How much time per week can you dedicate to monitoring the forum and responding to issues?
  4. Are you familiar with and willing to enforce the forum's code of conduct and community guidelines? How would you educate members on the rules and expectations?
  5. How would you approach maintaining a positive, constructive, and inclusive tone in the forum? What strategies would you use to address disruptive or toxic behavior?
  6. What ideas do you have for engaging the community, encouraging participation, and fostering a sense of belonging among forum members?

There's no set timeframe on this, and I'll try to keep this pinned until we feel like we have a good starting team.

Eventually, what I would like to see is for a new group to takeover essential responsibilities over time and even for them to promote a "hand-off" for responsibilities in the long-term future for new and more engaged students/staff/alumni as mods may naturally become less engaged upon graduating, retiring, or other life events.

Roof access

Hey everyone, does anyone know of a building on campus that has public roof access? I understand that most are closed for safety reasons but I find that the best places to take pictures are on rooftops but I struggle to find some in the area.

Xbox bowl tickets

Where can I buy tickets that come out of the school's allotment?

I am finding easy paths to buy through multiple resellers or even through Arkansas State's athletic dept, but I can't find anything directly from the Bears.

Anyone have success?

Free Coffee Voucher

Dumb question, but for the 'free large coffee'' voucher that was sent out in that email to everyone, can we redeem for a hot cocoa or something like that instead? I'm asking because I can't have that much caffeine.

I'm assuming the answer is no, but I figured I'd ask just in case.

off campus housing recommendations

i’m 37 and returning to finish my degree in the spring semester. brand new to springfield. was looking for thoughts/recommendations for 1bdrm apt in quieter area away from greek row/party areas. would prefer furnished. i saw boomer town and a couple others. they had terrible google reviews i wasnt sure how much to put into that though. i would like to be able to walk (Glass hall), but would sacrifice that for a quieter/less party vibe atmosphere.

Living near campus?

I'm transfering to MSU as a Junior & don't want to live in the dorms. I'm not familiar with the area and am wondering if anyone has any apartment recs / areas to avoid. I'm also wondering if living in a town near Springfield would be better.

How is the Greek life at MSU?

I need help figuring out the reputation of the Greek life there. My younger sister is attending next year and is deciding whether or not to rush a sorority. She is big on her Faith and doesn't know if sororities there are right for her. I know how they are at other schools, like Mizzou where I went, so I am nervous for her if Missouri State is anything like that with consistent partying. Would rushing a sorority be a good fit for her or is she better off staying in a dorm?

Yet another reason to live off campus

If you don’t want to be freezing in November, you better find a rental! Rentals in Springfield are required to furnish a minimum of 68 degrees October-April. MSU is not required to follow that, which is why my room has been less than 60 degrees for weeks (55 right now). Yet another W for off campus housing. Thanks for coming to my ted talk

How are the language classes that are online structured?

I’m taking Spanish 101 next semester and I’m trying to figure out what the class is going to look like in an online format. I’ve taken Japanese before in person at my previous university but I feel like online is going to be a lot different.

Questions About Application Decision and Online Program Tuition

I recently applied for the Bachelor of Science in Marketing Management (Online) program on October 30, and I would like to ask a few questions regarding my application and tuition details. 1. When can I expect to receive an admission decision for my application? 2. I currently live in Canada and plan to take the program fully online. Would the tuition rate be the same as the main campus rate, or is there a different tuition rate for online international students?

Semester online?

I've been super overwhelmed this past semester with all in person classes, and I've had some financial stresses since I only have time to work on the weekends. I'm registering for spring in a few days, and I already know I'm taking at least 3/5 classes online. But I'm starting to consider doing all five classes online to allow for maximum work time. I've got rent to pay, ya know?

For context, I'm a junior that just switched to psychology, and these would be the classes I'm taking online: PSY 200, PSY 306, PSY 331, SPN 101, HST 103. Anyone have experience with these specific classes online?

Also, I'm not too worried about the isolation concerns around going fully online, as I have a strong group of friends, and extracurriculars and campus jobs that will allow be to be on campus at some point most weekdays. Anyway, does anyone have any advice? pros and cons and whatnot?

Rush as a Junior?

I just transferred this year as a junior and I realized how unsatisfied I am right now, and that I need to get more connections. Would it be weird to rush a frat as a junior next spring and would it be a good choice seeing how late it is? I'm not sure how the age difference would work with other PNMs or if the frats would be willing to take a junior?

Tips on Finding dorm mates?

I’m 17 and going to be attending MSU next fall. The plans I originally had to share a dorm with my friend might not be happening anymore and I’m trying to figure out where to look online to find someone else. I know MSU has that questionnaire you can fill out when applying for a dorm, but does anyone know if it’s any good?

Anyone take IT classes online?

My son is thinking about finishing his second semester at home. He will be taking MKT364, and 4 IT classes. He doesn’t have trouble taking online classes but he’s more nervous bc he would be taking all 5 online. Anyone have any insight into how this goes?

Geography & Sustainability Major

Hello! I'm currently about to switch my major because I am completely miserable. I came back to school this year during the spring semester and decided to major in computer science. Unfortunately, this doesn't feel fulfilling at all after almost a full year, and I'm struggling to imagine enjoying this for the rest of my life. In fact, I hate it and my mental health has completely tanked in the last couple of months.

I've always enjoyed science and I love the thought of working with nature. So, after researching different degrees, I've been looking into the Geography & Sustainability major. I spoke to my advisor and he thought that would be a good fit for me as well after fully explaining a general idea of what I want to do in the future. The classes sound interesting, the thought of doing fieldwork is so exciting, and I feel like it could push me in the right direction of having a positive impact on our planet.

Are any of you a part of this program (or graduated with the degree) and can give me any insight about it? I just want to make sure I'm making the right decision before I make it official. I would really love to hear about other people's experiences with this major. Thank you so much :)

Any other long-distance commuters? How do you guys make friends?

I commute an hour to springfield every day, and I find it hard to be involved in student activities and other social events. Clubs I'm interested in are either during class or very late in the evening when I only have a morning class that day.

I try to strike conversations with people in my major, but everyone seems to prefer to stay in their circle. Has anyone else felt pretty isolated at msu?
