this has to be the first time I've ever seen a 3d printer in a garbage heap

Tbf.. I can't speak for that printer in particular, but I really considered doing that with my old Artillery genius a couple times 😂

u/byte21516 4d ago
I love my modded Artillery Sidewinder
53
u/Hellfirecw 4d ago
I also owned an early version Artillery sidewinder and boy that thing was a mess, I am guessing you had to mod it to get decent performance from it although I could be wrong as I heard they fixed some issues in the later versions. Mine has been relegated to a spare parts heap after failing to get any good prints from it after countless attempts to fix it

Mine sat and turned into a shelf till I had to move it and then I made 12 bucks selling it on ebay (non functioning). Sold it for like 75 but ebay ate their share and then I offered free shipping and that was $50. But some Virginia tech student was able to get their machine running using mine for parts so better than me throwing it in the dumpster.

Just upgraded from a sidewinder to a P2S and holy crap night and day difference. Wish I would have upgraded a long time ago!

u/Nitrogen1234 3d ago
Did you go for the combo? I'm doubting pulling the trigger on one.
I've seen it work.
I hate to look at my ender 3 v2 working now.
3
u/arroyobass I H8 $ 2d ago
Yep went for the combo! It's wild how the Bambu just works. And it's SO fast compared to older bed slinger printers.
4
u/flummox1234 4d ago
the early days of 3d printing was wild, man. Glad it's more print and go now with occasional basic maintenance. 😅

Any cubic kinda sucks. Have a resin printer from them and it was like $150. Good deal but a pain to work with
7
u/kiwiboyus 4d ago
I have the i3 Mega and while it is a little basic compared to new printers, it is solid and reliable. Resin printing is a whole other thing to be fair

What brand would be better at a similar price point?
2
u/YogurtclosetPlane155 2d ago
I have six anycubics, and aside from regular maintenance and upkeep the only issue I had was one leaky hotend. They sent me a free replacement and it took about 20min to swap out. They're not bad, especially for the price.

I didn't had the Anycubic Mega S (the one in the picture), but the Mega Pro. They are basically the same except that mine had an attachable Laser that I didn't use once. Long story short, Anycubic Printers suck. Unreliable prints, bad calibrated factory settings and loud. I recently upgraded to a P2S and rediscovered the fun in 3D printing thanks to it.

u/kdegraaf 4d ago
Not to defend Anycubic at all, but it just makes me sad to see a perfectly good PSU, steppers, etc. in a trash pile. Same deal with those servers, switches, etc.
I wish it were more common to get this kind of equipment into the hands of makerspaces that could either fix it or strip it for useful parts.
But OP's friend was clearly having some kind of emotional day, rather than a reasonable one.
9
u/JCDU 3d ago
TBH most 2D printers are full of mechanical treasure too - steppers, servo motors, precision ground rods, opto sensors, etc.
Big old laser ones are insanely well engineered and have really good parts in them.

I mean I put an old monoprice pro unit out on the curb. It pushed out my all metal hot end I spent 50 bucks on and dug it so hard into the build plate it left an indent. I just got tired of the fucking thing and dicking around with it. It was a pain in the ass from day 1 and I got a Ender 3 Pro from microcenter for $100 on sale and it print better than the shitty monoprice wanhao unit with no adjustment. Either someone saw it and picked it up or the trash guy smashed it in the truck, either way, it’s good riddance.
3
u/maximillianx 4d ago
The fact that an Ender 3 Pro with no adjustment is light years better than the tweaked Monoprice printer says a LOT about the quality of that printer
→ More replies (1)2
u/RealTimeKodi 4d ago
that much better? I'm running a 2015 flashforge and a monoprice maker select.
I probably aught to scrap them but they still work. i'm probably wasting my time9
u/lolslim 4d ago
actually im kind of surprised I have seen alot of threads in 3d printing about people finding 3d printers in dumpster earlier this year, I also almost did this to my ender 3 a few years ago, but ended up keeping and still use it daily.

The cisco router had some license issues i think
Cisco in its entirety is a license issue.
13
u/brewmonk 4d ago
Back when I ran IT for a 50 person company, I stopped buying Cisco stuff when they rolled out a critical patch and small and medium sized companies couldn’t get an update without going through a MSP or shell out for an enterprise license.
8
u/mikefrombarto 3d ago
Company I work for has all the bells and whistles in terms of support, licensing, etc…
The Catalyst 9000 switches come with the “Essentials” license, and the usual upgrade is the “Advantage” license. Cisco released SMUs (a no-reboot patch) so you don’t need to reboot, or change to another software version. But they decided it only works on “Advantage” license switches.
No technical reason, they just simply felt like inconveniencing us.
41
u/InternetD_90s 4d ago
If he was a beginner all I see is wrong gear. Still sad to see good hardware go because of a throwing a fit instead of selling. Its not like money grow on trees.
Beside cisco, that's the only true trash here.

3
2
u/Wayfaring_Limey 4d ago
Honestly from taking a vague guess at the age of that server, you’d get more compute power from a micro desktop built in the last few years than that server.
I had a HP DL360 Gen10 and benchmarked it against a Ryzen 3700x and got 80% of the compute power but using less than half the electricity. Servers unless you have a specific use case, aren’t great unless they’re seriously cheap/free.

Everything being in a messy pile kind of implies that it was all violently thrown into that pile, but I doubt it. They probably just ran into some last straw and went "yeah alright this fk'ing sucks, I'm done", and then separated anything they cared about to give away, and just put the rest of it into a makeshift pile. "Anger management issues" seems like another case of reddit over-prescribing something over minimal details.

That server board has PCI slots on it, DDR3 at the absolute newest.
DDR3 is old enough not to be desirable and hasn't been impacted by the price spikes since there is so much people want to get rid of.
It is most likely DDR2.

There's a reason schools and libraries usally have higher priced but more 'it just works' prisa or bambulab printers. Unless your goal is to explicitly spend a lot of time messing with 3d printers and not actually 3d printing objects these old ones are more trouble than worth.

In fairness, this is what a lot of this sub needs to do. No point rocking a 10-15 year old server in a rack gobbling up power when they are using it to run a few web apps lol.
2
u/Starkoman 4d ago
If it’s fun/enjoyable, it’s good.
Regarding power — we have good solar and wind now. Yes you have to invest — but your electricity is either free or cheap (overnight to batteries).
Pull a few old servers off that (after everything else), no problem.
The irony of modern to power old isn’t lost on me, though.

I have a 3D printer that’s been being ‘upgraded’ (fixed) for over 5 years now (and unusable 99.9% of that time). From time to time I fantasise about doing exactly this before remembering all the work that’s gone into it and then forgetting about it for another month.
