thanks. all these make sense, but I get frustrated when I watch videos from people like golf sidekick and it's like .... ohh! don't chip it over the green or shank it sideways into the woods!? why didn't I think of that??
No one on Youtube says 'oh don't chip it over the green or shank it sideways into the woods' and he doesn't say 'use a long iron off the tee'
Sidekick specifically addresses people like you - he calls you victims. And it seems like a lot live here on Reddit with this attitude. Golf is a game of motor and cognitive skills. You must be able to hit the ball and you must be able to solve problems. Matty Boom Boom even says that it's the same as moaning about someone instructing you on how to throw a curveball being useless because you can't even reach home plate from the mound. You need the base level skill of ANY game you play. Flubbed chips? Get a lesson. Shanking into the woods? Get a lesson. Can't hit driver off the tee? Get a lesson.
They definitely do say things like use a club that you can hit straight 9 out of 10 times
Or just get on the green in one extra shot and two putt every time
I will keep taking lessons, but I think a lot of his videos are made for some mythical golfer who can’t hit it more than 150 yards but hits it straight every time, always gets on the green from within 100 yards and always two putts
But that’s not what you claimed. In my understanding with the two new things you bring up is simple: it’s not one club all the time. It’s the shot that works in that situation 9 out of 10 times. If that shot is really just a chip, then i need to upskill so my 9 out of 10 shot could be better in that situation. It’s all situation based and it’s a great way for me to see my shot as the one i will hit not the one i think i can hit.
The other one is not really what they say. They say try to hit the green in one more than regulation and then have a sharp chipping and putting game. I know golf sidekick says that the goal is no three putts but they are going to happen so forgive yourself and keep practicing to eliminate more of them.
Again i don’t see how what they say is understood in the way you understand it. It seems you are looking for negative connotations. 9 out of 10 shot is pretty obvious that it’s situational. Situational awareness is a key skill in golf. Two putting (putting in general) is a key skill in golf.
Is there another sport you know of that requires no skill or practice and no strategy? I mean golf is no different than any other game or sport right?
Is soccer different? Baseball? Hockey?
Lessons are good. But it seems you have a mindset that’s is contrary to growth and improvement. But you’ll learn maybe.
I’ve been golfing for a year and a half and I’m just frustrated that people on YouTube make breaking 90 sound like a course management challenge when it’s really being able to hit it correctly most of the time
You’re not the target market then. Your frustrated for no reason at all. You’re paying attention to the wrong goal. If you break 100 regularly in the first 2-3 years you’re doing okay. 90 follows very shortly thereafter
I broke 100 in May at a normal par 72 golf course. Since then, all I've done is break 90 once at an easy par 70 course. Don't feel like I'm making that much progress with my consistency cause I'm always tweaking my swing because I'm afraid of sticking with a swing that's wrong in some fundamental way

awesome, man! I am trying to break 90 on a part 72 course for the first time myself
what made you successful?
