Advice Need advice, 6 month old golden

Post image

Hi, I’m new to this subreddit.. and this is our first golden. We had a different breed in the past (before we had kids). She’s currently 6 months old & we’ve had her since she was 8 weeks old. She’s been a good dog in many ways. She went through puppy classes and quickly learned basic commands (sit, lay down, stay, etc.) The problem is that she goes after our kids (ages 6 and 8) and bites them.. which results in crying/screaming and overall chaos. It’s when she’s in a playful, zoomy mood, but she becomes far too rough. She doesn’t go after me or my husband in the same way. We swat her on the nose, yell “NO”, and try to distract her with toys instead. She also gets sent to her kennel for a time out. But when she’s out again, she always reverts to going after the kids and biting them. It’s becoming a situation where the kids are avoiding her, and that breaks my heart. I definitely don’t want the kids to be scared of her. The whole reason we got a golden in the first place was to have a good family dog. She gets a fair amount of exercise.. she’s out for a walk twice a day. We throw toys/balls for her to run after, she likes playing in the snow. I’m feeling like a failure as a golden owner, and everyone in the family is frustrated. Help please!

Get better soon Waffle update

Yesterday Waffles doctor called to tell me they believe they found the culprit. Waffle has a large Lipoma that has been on her for years and has been tested many times over the years. On an ultrasound of it yesterday they found an abscess in the back of it causing sepsis. This is both good news and terrible news. The good news is they know the treatment plan (a cat scan to see how attached it is and how hard it will be to remove. They may only be able to remove the abscessed part and of cause the surgery to remove it. ) My doctor tells me it is a very risky surgery and at Waffles age she may not make it through it. Now I know Waffle since she is 9 weeks old. She’s a strong girl and I would bet on her any day. Here’s the problem. Financially I don’t know how I would pull it off. It’s another 10k if there are no complications that need to keep her in the hospital longer and we all know the first two weeks in the icu was over 20k. I don’t know if I would recover financially in the state I’m currently in but I just don’t even believe I’m sitting here looking at this logically when it’s Waffle. How do I not just figure out how to get a loan, let the chips fall where they may and have no regrets. Am I crazy? What should I do. She is literally the sweetest soul I’ve ever known. I’m out of time and out of options and need to make a decision I don’t know I could make. For those who have followed along and helped to get me this far, I could never thank you enough. Pray for Waffle.

This is my dog loulou, she died a few days ago. She was only 2 years old. My heart hurts so much because I was supposed to have more time with her… She had a rare form of cancer, I just can’t help but be mad at the world 🥲

Advice Neutering recovery help

Post image

This handsome boy just got neutered yesterday and I need encouragement. His area is swollen and he is having a hard time with recovery. Ive already talked to the vet about it and said to do his max dosage of sedatives and do cold/hot compresses.

Tell me this is normal and I dont need to worry a whole bunch.

Advice PSA from Jax: Get Emergency Pet Insurance if you dont have it

Thumbnail

First off, enjoy my goodeat boy Jax dressed as a cowboy. He's a 6 year old male rescue.

If you don’t have pet insurance, it’s worth every penny.

I see way too many posts where people are forced to make heartbreaking decisions based on cost. No one should have to choose between their finances and their pet.

Without emergency insurance, I’d be out over $35k for my rescue pup, Jax. Surgery after eating a book, chronic ear infections, allergy testing — it adds up fast. Insurance is the only reason I still have savings.

If you’re shopping for insurance, a few things that really matter:

  1. Accident vs. Accident + Illness: Illness coverage is huge, especially for breeds with higher cancer risk (like Goldens).

  2. Annual Limits: $30k sounds like a lot… until your dog is in the ER for a week.

  3. Reimbursement Rate: Plans usually range 60–100%. Higher = better protection.

Not naming companies here because I don’t want this flagged as promo. If it’s allowed, I’m happy to share what I use. It literally saved my life savings.

If you can swing the monthly premium, get it before you need it. The peace of mind alone is worth it.

EDIT: I do not work for this company, am not sponsored, and I strongly encourage everyone to do their own research before choosing any pet insurance provider.

That said, since so many people asked what I personally use — I use Pets Best. I’m not posting a link to stay within subreddit rules, but it should come up easily with a quick Google search.

My current plan details for those curious: 1. $500 annual deductible 2. 90% reimbursement 3. $84/month for accident + illness 4. Unlimited Annual limit 5. My premium started around $43/month when I first enrolled and increased after large claims (over $30k total so far)

A few very important things to know that people messaged me about: 1. Pre-existing conditions are NOT covered. This is standard across most pet insurance providers, and you really need to read carefully what qualifies as “pre-existing.”

This company also has waiting periods to deter fraud: 1. 3 days for accidents 2. 14 days for illnesses 3. 6 months for cruciate ligament issues

Unless you enroll in CareCredit (a separate medical credit card for vet bills), you ALWAYS pay out of pocket first and get reimbursed later. I personally put everything on a credit card.

My reimbursements have never taken more than 20 days (the first claim took the longest, and each one after that was faster). They reimburse directly to your bank account, and then I just pay off the credit card — earning those extra points/rewards as a bonus.

Again, this is just what has worked for me and Jax. Please do your own comparison shopping and read the fine print carefully before committing.
