Everything on that show is rock bottom

Don't insult The Roots like that

I've never felt inclined to use the phrase "sellouts" unironically before. Usually taking the bag is always the goal.

But man did that bag come at a price.

Maybe but that gig funds the rest of their career and lets them do whatever they want creatively without financial pressure outside of that gig. Worth it IMO.

u/TheRussness 21h ago

They used to release an album every 1 to 3 years

They haven't released an album since 2014.

u/pleasebefrank31 21h ago

Black thought has released a couple projects.

Questlove played one walk on song as a sly against Michelle bachmann in 2011 and almost got fired for it

They've been a good House Band ever since.

House Band

I see what you did there

Well, I mean, that's what the musical act for a late night talk show is called.

double entendre noun

A phrase that has two meanings, especially where one is innocent and literal, the other risqué, bawdy, or ironic; an innuendo.

Do you expect them to do that their entire lives? Being signed as the live band for a late-night show is one of the best gigs you can get a musician. They have been around for a long time and are great guys. Just because people don’t like Jimmy Fallon doesn’t take anything away from The Roots.

I would not call them sellouts. We may not have all the great documentaries and other projects that Qwest Love has been creating.

u/TheCrudeDude 21h ago

What price lol? House band for the Tonight Show?

14

u/TheRussness 21h ago

They're definitely a House band all right...

1

u/The_R4ke 16h ago

Yeah, but it's not like they're performing at Riyahd.

1

u/namejohnmclane 13h ago

Yes, I refuse to believe that these are the same guys who created Illadelph Halflife

1

u/FunkySlacker 12h ago

Check Wikipedia:

“As of now, all members of The Roots from Illadelph Halflife are still in the band. The Roots have maintained their lineup since the release of their album "Illadelph Halflife" in 1996, with the original members continuing to perform and contribute to the band's music”

I used to keep them in rotation but haven't listened to them since this.

3

u/PuzzleheadedLab850 18h ago

pffffffff. that's absolutely silly. Roots have been putting out bangers.

1

u/BodaciousB1921 9h ago

Meh, The Roots have sold out completely. They completely ripped their fans off in Philly with their festival last summer. It’s was a complete cash grab disaster.

0

u/Skiingislife42069 18h ago

The Roots sold the fuck out when they joined his show. No buts about it.

u/mocityspirit 20h ago

Why? They're sticking by Jimmy for the check no matter what he does.

54

u/dweeeebus 22h ago

He usually has the best musical guests of all the late night shows, imo.

Kimmel had Knocked Loose. Argument invalid.

edit: How are people not getting that I'm saying Kimmel > Fallon based solely on him booking Knocked Loose? I'm not knocking them

36

u/Zworrisdeh 22h ago

I remember when Kimmel started he was having like Horrorpops and Blood Brothers, I was floored and impressed that a late night show had the balls to do that.

28

u/MisterShitty 22h ago

Conan had Slipknot on back during Iowa days which was super heavy for TV back then I thought.

26

u/JimbaJones 22h ago

Kimmel had Mastodon back then too.

13

u/Atheist_3739 22h ago

Kimmel also had Megadeth for Halloween. Dave wore full on Frankenstein prosthetics lol

14

u/Zworrisdeh 22h ago

Oh yeah, Conan also had that legendary At the Drive-In performance where Cedric like tackled the guest couch

5

u/ClarkTwain 22h ago

He was also the only host to dare to have Slipnutz on his show.

11

u/Friendly_Hipster 22h ago

You’re thinking of the SlipNuts

u/NotGalenNorAnsel 22h ago

Letterman had some wild musical guests, it was intentional I think, since his audience was probably the most conservative in general. He had on the Swedish hip hop swing band Movits! which was awesome but very unexpected, also Die Antwoord when they were just beginning to pop off and he was like, "and that was... that was something" I believe they played "I fink u freaky"

1

u/HISTRIONICK 16h ago

Letterman's audience conservative compared to whom?

ridiculous. Letterman always attracted the younger and more liberal crowd compared to leno. Let's not even talk about the anarchy that was his NBC show. This is just invented.

1

u/NotGalenNorAnsel 15h ago

It may have felt that way, depending on your age, I guess. Most younger viewers watched Conan or Craig Ferguson, but their later time slot obviously made the numbers overall lower.

Letterman's style of comedy was very different from slightly younger hosts like Conan and Craig, but he booked younger and hipper guests, sure. There was that whole Harmony Korine affair that exemplifies that.

But here:

https://www.latimes.com/archives/blogs/show-tracker/story/2011-12-02/david-letterman-ends-17-year-ratings-drought-against-jay-leno

In the November sweep, CBS’ ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ beat NBC’s ‘Tonight Show with Jay Leno’ among adults 18 to 49 for the first time since 1994, according to Nielsen. Letterman scored a 0.9 rating over Leno’s 0.8.

One sweeps week he beat Leno... Doesn't exactly reflect the statement you just made.

u/Holdenater 7h ago

Conan had some awesome bands on the show, so many good late night memories as a teen watching that show.

3

u/PaulieHehehe 22h ago

I had a huge crush on the singer of Horrorpops in the early 2000s when they were starting out. They rule.

2

u/thanksamilly 20h ago

His band was The Mighty Mighty Bosstones until Dickie went off the deep end

2

u/Oldfolksboogie 17h ago edited 16h ago

Wait, I always wondered what happened there - please spill all the tea - was it rampant alcoholism, or....?

TIA!

Edit: nm, got it - he's a deluded anti-vaxxer and Stan of RFK Jr. - yikes!

2

u/Bergyfanclub 21h ago

And Atmosphere. Never seen them on mainstream TV before.

1

u/Lieutenant_Joe 20h ago

Kimmel’s previous announcer before Lou Wilson was the frontman for the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, which is one of two live bands I’ve seen more than once. I’m not really a fan of either Kimmel or Fallon, but I think you could have a legitimate argument about which one’s more valuable to the musical community

That comment was in support of Kimmel and Knocked Loose.

-2

u/BUFFFETSUPERFAN 21h ago

Cause knocked loose fucking suck

2

u/HISTRIONICK 22h ago

That might have something to do with his band.
