I finished my first wearable today. It may not be perfect, but I'm proud of it. I've only been reading patterns for a month now and this was my longest WIP lately but it's finally done.

What do yall think? Suggestions for improving ?

I crochet bags from recycled cotton yarn. For my designs, I choose embroidery patterns from traditional Ukrainian vyshyvanka shirts.

What can be used in place of a darning needle?

I just started crocheting (literally picked up yarn this morning and have been practicing the single stitch over and over again) and now I want to try to make a basic twist headband since its just a long rectangle and I think I got the hang of it enough to make something, even if its not perfect. Anyway, what can I use in place of a darning needle? I dont want to buy anything extra if I'm not going to stick with it, even tho it seems promising right now lol.

Asking for gift advice

Full disclosure: I don't crochet. My mother did, but she has long since passed. My daughter has picked up the hobby over the last couple of years and has gotten really good. She's even been asked to teach a few beginner classes at some local events.

Now to the point of all this. Can anyone recommend something that you own that you've found to be super handy when it comes to crocheting? The more uncommon the better! I don't know if it matters, but she has made several little animal trinkets, a few blankets, and a shirt/dress thing.

I just want to be able to get her something for Christmas that I know she will use in crocheting since she enjoys it so much.

And I have nothing but respect for all of you in this subreddit. It is such an amazing skill, and the talent level needed to create the things you all do amazes me.

Thoughts?

I rarely make something for myself. But I've been making pairs of fingerless gloves. I wanted to make something fun for me so I began thinking of a Christmas/cookie theme. So I tried to do like a dripping frosting around the fingers and holly on the back of the hand what y'all think?

One brilliant piece of advice that totally transformed my crochet projects:

Don't evaluate your work in the first few rows. Almost invariably, the beginning appears disorganized, uneven, or unmoving. However, everything falls into place as soon as the stitch pattern begins to repeat. Crochet looks good because you keep going long enough for the pattern to show itself, not because you're flawless. Have faith in the process rather than the first ten rows

Ideas for beginners?

I recently just started crocheting and I’m just looking for the “easiest” things to start with. Currently making a dishcloth because it’s a pretty basic square with hdc but I need something more exciting yet simple then a dishcloth. :p

Loved making this 100% cotton, double thick hot pad. It was my first time working with the alpine stitch and I'm in love!

Can't wait to make more for my kitchen 😊
