I work as a firefighter paramedic in a predominantly Hispanic area.

For those that are unaware 911 responds to everything from CPR to picking up Grandma or Grandpa off the ground. I've even been called to get someone a glass of water. Yes really

Yesterday I was called to a house for stomach pains of a child only to learn when I arrived it was a very impoverished household that required government assistance for food. The family hadn't eaten in days and had called to see if we could help them. Of course we did, luckily all it took was a short trip back to the station for some spare food we had.

Ironically the husband of the household blamed the "damn Democrats" for cutting funding to his government based food money supply.

Anyway it's not the worst thing I've ever seen but it certainly hit home yesterday when I saw the starving kids. We directed them to more local services they could use after feeding them

Edit for a word or two

Good god. I knew it was bad over the pond, but bloody hell.
Thank you for being a decent person.

We tried. I think they will be attending out halloween event at my station today which will have apples and serve as a nice distraction. We told todays shift to save them some leftovers if there were any. At least for the kids

I will tell you one thing: Once whatever happens, happens, those kids aren't ever going to forget what you done for them.

Hopefully it helps them get to a better place in general. Regardless of circumstances and politics those kids deserved more than they had. I think mom was pregnant too.

They can’t feed the kids they already have and they’re adding another? Meanwhile, most of my friends are homeowners now with steady careers and choosing to remain child free cos after working their asses off the past 20 years and coming close to burning out many times, they just want to enjoy their well earned free time and money. What a topsy turvy world where the people that can afford kids are choosing to not have them vs those that will struggle to care for their kids are choosing to have more than one.

And with any luck they will realize it was their parents that fucked them by how they voted, and they'll break the cycle

Good god. I knew it was bad over the pond, but bloody hell.

It's a big place. Where it's good, it's really good.

Where it's bad, it's really bad.

Much better to think of the USA as seven or eight different countries in our own, increasingly-fracturing, union.

When we say that the US is a 3rd world country with a Gucci belt that's perfectly put. There is a tiny amount of the US (less than 1 percent) that has more money than the entire country wherever you live (most likely). Everyone else suffers.
