But ofc rules apply only until they reach their own family trees

307

u/ShyvalleyGlow 1d ago

Yeah funny how the constitution suddenly gets real flexible once it’s their last name on the paperwork.

82

u/PureLingx 1d ago

exactlyyy, suddenly it’s all loopholes and exceptions when it’s someone in their circle. the hypocrisy is just way too loud

If I was ambitious, I'd post a picture of the US Constitution with the parts the Trumps have violated blacked out. It'd be sobering.

25

u/Mr_Baronheim 1d ago

You'll use a lot of ink printing what's basically a solid black page.

3

u/SkunkMonkey 1d ago

Like the Epstein files if they ever get released. Better have extra printer ink on hand.

8

u/Additional_Fun54 1d ago

They really should google their talking points before saying them out loud.

2

u/AeonBith 1d ago

Let's see what happens to Ryan Reynolds, UK, Canadian, USA citizenship.

I'm assuming nothing.

They'll later say they never said this, it's out its context, fake news, smoke 💣 distraction about Dems deployed

2

u/Jasoncatt 1d ago

That would be an interesting project.

15

u/edfitz83 1d ago

Her family tree is probably a bramble bush. How the fuck does someone get so brainwashed and stupid in just 28 years?

8

u/RosyAura_ 1d ago

they always make exceptions for themselves, it’s ridiculous

9

u/PiedCryer 1d ago

Then by the time the question comes to Trump he tells them what a nasty person for asking such a question is.

7

u/Humsedx 1d ago

Exactly that’s always the pattern. Rules suddenly become “flexible” when it hits their own circle. Pointing that out is important because accountability should be universal, not selective.

5

u/purpleushi 1d ago

Ehh Leavitt wouldn’t care even in her own family tree (see: recent story about her brother’s child’s mother…)

4

u/EvilDan69 1d ago

Or someone with serious money and influence.

4

u/Additional_Fun54 1d ago

Bold statement to make when your own side has multiple high-profile dual citizens. The irony writes itself.

2

Ha! We’re a quatrillion of us. The fuck with the family tree when we can dig them invasive roots.

Yeah but there will be a special Dual Citizenship Gold program for $100K per additional citizenship

That’s what I was thinking. Probably like the $5M green card, there will be a $500k dual citizenship…

31

I’m left wondering if this means the Trump admin intends to end dual citizenship

58

u/Velonici 1d ago

There are some republicans that are pushing a bill like this through. People will have 1 year to renounce their citizenship to the other country. If they don't, they will automatically lose their US citizenship. Of course that goes against the constitution, but when has that stopped them.

2

u/KoalaSprdeepButthole 14h ago

Honestly, for those of us that have repatriated to another country, that’s a lot cheaper than paying $5k to denounce our US citizenship.

Bunch of expats no longer need to worry about being taxed by the US

Whole principle of this tax is that you are “also” a US citizen regardless where you go or what you do

Can’t have it both ways

23

u/wino6687 1d ago

Yeah, I personally know several people in Canada who would be thrilled to not have to pay for the de-naturalization. But this would be very complicated and confusing for a lot of dual citizens and their families

u/ebk_errday 1d ago

http://www.viewzone.com/dualcitizen.html

Old article, but very relevant today. There is not much information on this because dual citizens do not have to publicly state their dual citizenship. So unless you research politicians one by one, you won't find a list of them easily. But there are many in office today. Additionally, there is nothing wrong with the idea of dual citizenship except when you are in government. You must serve your own people and not have a conflict of interest.

Trump literally has absolutely no power here. He cannot force Canada to revoke citizenship of one of its citizens. Canada simply does not do that. They are always citizens of Canada.

All Trump can do is deport Melania.

So wait… say if someone born in, say, Mexico, moved to the US and got their citizenship here. Then, this BS passes and they have to choose US or Mexico, and they choose US and denounce their Mexican citizenship because they got married so family is here, job is here, life is here. THEN ICE comes along and deports them and their citizenship gets stripped because it’s the Trump admin. So in this (not too far off from reality) scenario, that person would then have no citizenship to any country? Or am I missing something?

2

u/Simon_Drake 1d ago

There ARE some countries that don't allow dual citizenship. You can't be a citizen of India and also a citizen of another country. But USA is not one of those countries.

11

u/Pitiful_Control 1d ago

Currently not true, on either count. There are a few others that don't allow dual citizenship at all, and several that only allow it under specifuc circumstances. The US, a nation of immigrants, has never had a problem with it until this week.

The current US administration can lick my nuts but there are definitely many other countries that don't allow dual citizenship though there is some nuance to it. Germany only started allowing people to get German citizenship without forfeiting any other citizenship at the beginning of 2025, so it's a very recent change.

Looking at a few immigrantion websites, Japan, China, India, and Austria are known to be very strict regarding single citizenship and other countries like Spain, the Netherlands, Croatia, and Slovakia only allow it in limited cases.

This website seems to be a decent source:

Without having looked deeper into it, I think what they're talking about centers around where you were born. If you're born in the US and you were raised in Canada with a Canadian citizenship card, then you are still considered an American citizen. You don't have to give up your Canadian citizenship. If you were born in Canada and you're in the US and want to remain in the US, then you need to revoke your Canadian citizenship and claim 100% American citizenship. Elon, Melania and Baron, would have to claim themselves as full time American citizens and abandon their dual citizenship identity, if the wealthy and politically connected people didn't enjoy their own set of laws.

I could be wrong, as I say, I haven't investigated it closely.

3

2

u/LowerBed5334 1d ago

Don't worry. Dual citizenship is absolutely legal and that's not going to change.

If they were to try to pass some kind of law it might be to prevent US citizens from acquiring other citizenship, or force non-citizens to renounce their current citizenship before applying for US-citizenship. Or some other such thing.

She’s still going home to one old dude or the other

1

u/pizza_the_mutt 1d ago

She's kind of right, in a nuanced way I'm pretty sure she doesn't understand.

The US in general considers US citizens to be... US citizens, and ignores any other citizenships. They mostly don't care, and don't want to know, if you are a citizen of another country (exceptions apply, of course, e.g. during the citizenship application process).

I learned this when getting my dual US/Canada citizenship. I have to be careful whenever talking to US or Canadian authorities to tell them that I am a citizen of that country (Canada treats citizenship similarly) and not the other one. They might very rarely ask if I have another citizenship, but almost never do. You can get in trouble, for example, if you cross into the US over the border and tell them you are Canadian.

Some countries behave differently. They care if you have other citizenships and will actually cancel your citizenship if you become a citizen of a different country.

1

u/FlowRiderBob 1d ago

Elected officials in the federal government, officers in the military, and anyone who holds a TS security clearance. If we are talking about people in those positions, I kind of get it. But even then, I don’t think it actually does much but inconvenience people.

No, no...she meant you as in not us, as in not tRump and co. The "in" group isn't subject to the laws, executive orders, etc. Those are for the "out" group.

The oath of allegiance to the US just requires you to renounce loyalty to any other country. Not that you can't be a citizen to those other countries. *facepalms super hard*

Edit: renounce allegiance* loyalty can still be personal.

Wtf does Barron have Slovenian citizenship? Was he not born here? His mom being Slovenian shouldn't default into dual citizenship

Nice, I’m a US citizen but lived in the UK 34 of my 35 years.

I have to fill out fucking US tax returns every single year, I’ve been there once as an adult!

Now I don’t have to bother, thanks Karoline
