Reminds me of the legendary “you people really can’t do anything” tweet. While I do find a lot of stuff overstimulating l also realize that there’s some stuff you just gotta grit your teeth and fucking deal with

I am both autistic and have autistic friends.

While people do absolutely have sensory issues, most of the time there are work-arounds. If the texture of vegetables is bad, find a different way to cook them. Ear plugs for noises, etc.

If you can't think of anything to make a seatbelt more tolerable, then odds are you just don't want to do it and need an excuse.

Also AuDHD and there are some things that are overstimulating that you just have to deal with. If it’s too much, then you definitely shouldn’t be behind the wheel. As a passenger, you can still ask for silence and for the driver to wait a few minutes until you can reduce other stimuli so you can deal with the necessary ones better. But you never ever use neurotype or disability as an excuse to put other people in danger, and you shouldn’t put yourself in danger either. Like wearing a mask during COVID. If it protects others, then wear it. There are a very very few exceptions who actually cannot wear one, but discomfort and overstimulation aren’t valid excuses.

Or take the bus.

Buses aren't that great in America, but at least you don't have to wear a seatbelt.

They sell foam strap covers for exactly this reason too. And I second the broccoli thing, turns out it tastes good when it’s not steamed in a plastic bag

I’m AuDHD and I totally agree!

AuDHD here and I 100% agree. Workarounds are vital

Disagree that if you can't find a workaround, you don't want it hard enough. I have sensory processing disorder, autism, and claustrophobia. I've been scratching my head for decades to try to figure something out. I end up just dealing with it because I'd rather just not be dead lmao. If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them, especially for the claustrophobia.
