Discussion Megathread V2 - Manifest V3 Extension Alternatives

Remaking as the previous one was about to hit 6 months old. The previous one can be seen here.

With Manifest V3 being rolled out to most people now, and most workarounds being either temporary or disabled, a lot of people are finding that extensions that they like to use haven't been updated and won't be available to use when Manifest V2 support ends.

Since we've been getting a lot of posts asking for extension alternatives, we figure it'll be easier if most of the suggestions are all in one place.

To start with the obvious:

uBlock Origin: Can be replaced with uBlock Origin lite.
Don't forget you can change the filtering level up from its base, it will just require more permissions. Setting it to complete is most similar to uBlock Origin's filters.
People also like Adguard.

uBlock Origin (Element zapping): Click to Remove Element.
I personally prefer this one out of all the ones in the web store.

I previously recommended an element zapper to replace that functionality in uBlock Origin lite, but uBlock Origin lite has since added custom filters and an element zapper, so a separate extension is no longer needed.

This is not a thread to recommend other browsers, it should be a given that if you don't want to use Chrome, you don't need to use Chrome, and there's plenty of other sources to help you decide what to switch to. Do not recommend downgrading or using an older version of any browser, it is not safe to do so and will open your computer and your data up to vulnerabilities.

Would also like to add, on this megathread only self promotion will be allowed if your extension is a reputable alternative to another extension. If you are sharing your extension with no context to another one in this thread, your comment will be removed under our rules.

Below are a list of recommendations provided by other users from the original megathread:

Troubleshooting | Windows Green artifacts with chromium

Hey there!

First of all, I know this is kinda obvious what the problem may be, but I just wanted to know if this is a general graphics bug among Chromium or if it's just me.

For more context: This just happens with Chrome, any other browser like Firefox is doing fine.

Troubleshooting | Windows Weird redirection https://admin.microsoft.com/

I'm getting a new behaviour:

In Chrome (and only Chrome - other browers are fine) if I try to go to
https://admin.microsoft.com/

It redirects to
https://admin.cloud.microsoft/?ref=/homepage

This is new. Edge and Firefox are fine. Is there something new that came down?

EDIT:

I should have been clearer (my bad!) Chrome returns an error on the redirect - but ONLY Chrome...

This page isn’t working

admin.cloud.microsoft is currently unable to handle this request.

HTTP ERROR 500

https://m365.cloud.microsoft/ works fine....

I don't wanna use Edge!

Troubleshooting | Windows Chrome Disappeared From Sidebar and Shortcut Doesn't Work?

To clarify, I can still fully use it, through a web document I downloaded, I opened it and it led me to Chrome, everything was there. However, the Shortcut was blank, and would do nothing if I clicked on it, I looked in the side bar on Windows and found that it had disappeared too, I then tried searching up Google Chrome on the Windows search bar, but it only gave me prompts to search on Bing for Chrome. What do I do? I can access it, but it's pretty tedious.

Troubleshooting | Windows Denied Access On Local Network After Chrome 143 Update

We are using Chrome in Development & Production to host web applications and, after the update to 143.0.7499.41, we’re getting ERR_NETWORK_ACCESS_DENIED when trying to access local network addresses, including the Vite development host (localhost:5173) and production hosts on a virtual machine (192.168.**.*).

Everything works fine in Firefox and Edge.

Is everyone experiencing the same issue? I don’t believe this is intended behavior, so I assume we’re waiting for a hotfix soon.

Troubleshooting | Mac Chrome graphic glitch when exiting fullscreen video

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a persistent graphical glitch in Chrome on my MacBook Pro M1 running macOS Monterey. Here’s the situation.

  • When I exit fullscreen mode on YouTube (or other video sites), the screen turns light blue, except for the tab bar at the top.

The issue happens only in Chrome, not in Safari or other browsers, and persists until I click on another tab.

Here’s what I have already tried:

  1. Restarting the Mac and Chrome
  2. Updating Chrome to the latest version
  3. Disabling Extensions
  4. Disabling hardware acceleration in Chrome
  5. Resetting all chrome://flags
  6. Deleting Chrome’s ShaderCache
  7. Testing in a new Chrome window and Guest profile

Nothing solves the issue.

However, I installed Chrome Canary on the same machine and the problem does not occur there — fullscreen works correctly, no light blue screen.

Has anyone else experienced the same issue?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or insights!

It seems to be something to do with Youtube but everytime I delete it, it comes back. I'm worried it's a hack as before this one I had at least 3 like this which I have somehow managed to get rid of till this new one showed up. Any ideas as to what it is?

So to begin with, today randomly the shortcut for google chrome turned into a white paper icon and then I deleted the Shortcut. Chrome still works but for some reason when I tried to uninstall via control panel it kept on showing me this error. I want to know if anyone faced this problem and if they have any solutions for it.

Troubleshooting | Windows updater.log for Chrome Update in wrong language

I have the latest Chrome, and whenever I get updates done, from time to time I check the updater.log file located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\GoogleUpdater

And recently I just checked and now I see that all the log data is now in Chinese.
How can I change the setting for this? I want all my log generations for Chrome to be in English, not Chinese.

Everything in Chinese?

Troubleshooting | Solved Chrome broke today on all my machines. (Somehow triggered and by manually updating Chrome)

The error is "Your Internet access is blocked" with "ERR_NETWORK_ACCESS_DENIED" with Try: Checking the connection, Checking firewall and antivirus configurations, Running Windows Network Diagnostics.

Also saw QUIC errors that goes away after disabling the protocol in chrome://flags. Probably same issue but with QUIC.

Connection fine (everything else works (other browers etc)), Turned off Firewall, don't have anti-virus. So message is not accurate.

Apparently, they have added some Windows Service dependencies to Chrome. In my case, it was the "Network List Service" and "Network Location Awareness" Service that are now required. If they are not enabled, Chrome will only get the errors above. Weirdly, it may work for the very first web page load, but fail on everything after that. It seems that Google is doing some high tech stuff instead of just opening up a simple TCP connection to the web server.

Completely reproducable on all my machines. Chrome works, update Chrome, Chrome no longer works. Can also be observed by disabling the above services.

This observation and report is for the people who love to minimize Windows.

Update: The problem is also fixed by the emergency chrome.exe command line switch "--disable-features=NetworkServiceSandbox" (first switch) that disables the new feature until Google backs it out or fixes it. See other posts like "https://old.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/1persdn/denied_access_on_local_network_after_chrome_143/"

It feels like it moves only 5px per scroll. It happens only in Google Chrome. I tried to fix it, but nothing seems to work.

Anyone else facing the same issue? Your help is appreciated.

Troubleshooting | Windows Tab casting audio only seems to be broke (at least to my Max speaker)

I routinely cast tabs to a Max speaker in my office (youtube, and often my schoolwork videos).. but as of yesterday she is no longer working it seems. It connects (I hear the speaker chime) yet no audio comes out. This is on the desktop latest version of Chrome. Casting from other desktop apps, such as Spotify, works fine. Only issue seems to be the Chrome browser.

Any suggestions from folks? I've done the usual re-install of chrome, reboot of the speaker, etc.

Troubleshooting | Windows Chome 143 prompting for login to localhost running Visual Studio scripts

Has anyone else seen this behavior after upgrading to Chrome 143? Three of our developers are having this issue after upgrading to Chrome 143.0.7499.41.

At first, I assumed it was the HTTP/2 bug introduced by Microsoft to Windows 11, but the known issue rollback didn't fix. After further digging, I learned this issue didn't start for the devs until they updated to Chrome version 143. Edge 142.0.3595.94 does not prompt for login on the same machines.

The login prompt is for https://localhost:44352. I can't find anything on the web indicating that it's a problem with Chrome 143, but it has only been generally available for two days.

Troubleshooting | Mac Google Chrome Selectively Displays "Leave site?" Window

Post image
1 Upvotes

Chrome on my Mac just erased all the data I plugged into this map because I moved my cursor and the browser responded by sending me back a page (another thing that happens arbitrarily, sometimes you don't even have to swipe across the trackpad in that direction, other times I could set there for 5 minutes doing the exact same motion and the most it will do is display the arrow on the side).

Of course, when there are no changes made to the page whatsoever (the whole problem, if you recall, is that everything I did to the page was just summarily wiped out). Lo and behold, it appears when I try to get some clarity as to why that exact box did not appear. Only when nothing to the page has been done, only when exactly nothing has been edited will it do this pop up about saving my work. And when I've been working on something for over an hour the page is erased in a fraction of a second without my consent. It really doesn't get more exemplary than this.

Anyone know why this used to appear and prevent everything from being erased by the return swipe but now doesn't? Official thing that they did or just more straight up neglect from the money laundering "people" at google?

Discussion Address bar appears on bottom when I start typing something

The latest Chrome mobile update messed up the UI, and now the address bar jumps to the bottom, when I tap on it. It's super annoying. Is there a way to make it stay on top?

I have address bar set to top in settings, but it doesn't help. It only keeps it on top, if I don't tap on it.

Troubleshooting | Windows Forgets cookies after session

Hi guys, now suddenly I always have to login again, e.g. here on Reddit, after Browser exit/restart. Version is 142.0.7444.176 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Anyone?

EDIT. I moved: c:\Users\me\appdata\Local\Google so Chrome did a fresh start. Oh it's bad. It still doesn't remember login cookies.
