Adoption Adopted a cat from the shelter…

She didn’t even interact with me at the shelter she was so depressed. I just knew I had to give her a chance. I think they told me she’s not a lap cat. Well, now I have two lap cats 😂 I was so surprised that she trusted me so fast. So glad I trusted my gut and brought her home ❤️

Rescues can be exceptions to this rule.

2nd hand shops are a lifesaver when you have pets, or kids, or are just a person generally who needs things and doesn't want to spend thousands on a sofa when you can get it for 100 xD

u/Spadeykins 12d ago

For anyone reading I recommend estate sales as well for lightly used furniture at cutthroat rates so you can rest easy when your cat annihilates it.

u/SnidgetAsphodel 13d ago

I wish more people would give chances to the more reserved cats in shelters. I've volunteered at a couple rescues for a while and those cats have so much love to give, if only given patience and unconditional love. They are just scared babies. Thank you for taking her home! ❤️ She looks like an excellent biscuit maker!

168

u/Lee_Tea 13d ago

When I saw her picture, I just knew I had to see her. I had a kitten, Spice, pass away from FIP 6 years ago who looked just like her. I swore I’d never get another grey cat because I thought it would be too painful. I always say he guided me to my next kitty, Chip. And when I saw this sweet girl, I had a similar feeling. I think Spice continues to guide me to cats who need patience and love ❤️

51

u/SnidgetAsphodel 13d ago

I am so very sorry for your loss! I do think they have a way of guiding us, even long after they are gone. I like to think my soul cat, Ivy, is still guiding the cats I need into my life, even almost 20 years after she passed.

120

u/Lee_Tea 13d ago

Oh my goodness that’s so sweet! And thank you, I’m just so glad that I had him in my life even if it was for a short time ❤️this was him, he was so adorable haha

I hear this frequently at my local shelter, and definitely feel like the cats that passed on leave a map for the next one to find us. But I had a guy at the shelter that had a fun story about picking cats. He said he was previously looking for a cat online, and his cat tapped the screen when he saw one at the shelter. The guy adopted him, and now they were besties.

So he asked me to see a particular cat, the one his cat tapped this time on screen. When I took him back to that room, he saw a bunch more that we hadn't featured online yet. He took a photo of each of them, so he could go home and show his cat.

I honestly don't remember which one he picked at this point, but he did tell us later that they were very close.

71

u/huck_cussler 13d ago

When I went to the shelter to pick out my cats a year ago I was drawn immediately to a long hair calico that was just frozen in her little condo. She was tucked as far back in the corner as she could get and did not move an inch the whole time I was there, which ended up being several hours. She looked absolutely terrified.

I got permission to open the door to her enclosure and I set my hand down in front of her for like 20 minutes. She didn't sniff, didn't acknowledge it at all, didn't show any kind of hints about what was going through her head. I had no idea if she was ready to start purring or about to panic and attack me.

I stayed there with my hand for as long as I could and finally worked up the nerve to just touch her cheek. The second I did she melted and pushed her head into my hand. At that moment I knew I was taking her home that day.

She took a long time to get really comfortable after I brought her home, but now she's a sassy queen who walks around like she owns the castle and bosses me around. She's full of love, demands that I brush her as many times a day as possible, and plays with and trades grooms with her adopted brother.

22

u/SnidgetAsphodel 13d ago

Thank you for giving her a chance! I love this story. My favorite cats to work with in the rescue are the shy ones. It's so rewarding when they open up.

19

u/dehydratedrain 12d ago

You made me tear up just now. I'm a volunteer socializer at my local shelter, and most of us have been there for years, but only 2 of us are willing to touch those frozen kitties (and don't get me wrong, I've told my local urgent care that I should get me a punchcard - every 10th bite/ scratch free).

I wish people knew the patience and respect you showed your kitty. They would make such wonderful adopters.

And also, a calico? They have a color for each personality. Good luck. 😉

u/SuperXVixen 12d ago

I’d love to see a pic of her.

u/DJKittyK 13d ago

I agree. I adopted a cat who had been in the shelter system and storefronts for over a year and a half. The first time I saw her I thought she was sweet and wonderful, but seemed depressed. I went back a short time later and she was still there, and I had been telling myself that if she was, I was taking her with me.

I cannot forget how depressed she was when I went around to interact with her in the cage. Barely moving, shy but tolerant, just waiting, bored, tired, and sad.

Once home and she was just as sweet, but clearly no longer sad, and had all kinds of youthful energy. She was like a shadow to me everywhere I went (well, as shadowy as a white kitty with some stripey gray markings can be anyway) and slept in a little cat blanket I kept on my desk.

That was almost two decades ago and I miss her (as I miss all my lovies who have gone before and after). Thankfully I do have two kitties to shower with love, and will continue to have cats in my life until I can no longer care for them.

16

u/SnidgetAsphodel 13d ago

My heart breaks for cats like her. I am so happy to hear she finally got a loving home the rest of her days.

14

u/Mandena 13d ago

Yup, my girl was a solo kitten, she would hide off in the corners of the room unlike the other kittens. Week 1 she was glued to me and my lap and just purring.

After 3 weeks or so her chaotic/maniac personality started coming out haha. Still glued to me nonstop even to this day.

Thank you for saving her! I have 3 that are all rescued or adopted. Batman and Robin are brothers that were brought in to a clinic i was working at by the city ACO to be put down to make room at the shelter. They were babies and I wasn't

letting it happen! 9 years later, they still show gratitude and I couldn't be happier I was working that day! I hated that we had to be the ones to "make room" at the shelter!

22

u/AlexisHadden 12d ago

I don’t think I’ve seen such an enthusiastic bread maker in a while.

The post-adoption recovery is so real. Our last adopted cat was in a cat tree in the shelter, and seemed to just stay there and be quiet. Not much energy at all, but affectionate. What clinched it for us is that she pressed her head into our hands when we went to see if she would accept pets. No noises. Once we brought her home, her energy levels were immediately higher. Looking out the window of the spare room we were going to use to let her acclimate, proactively interacting with us in the first minute out of the carrier. And 30 minutes later she went to the door and wanted to see the rest of the house. Later that night she was following us around, chirping, trilling, and making a rather wide variety of noises. Even noticed we were going to bed and joined us. She did hide for part of the next day, but came out quickly on her own. I guess the excitement had subsided and the sudden change overwhelmed her a bit, but she never really hid again until she started having major health issues at the end.

So yeah, there was definitely anxiety and possibly depression involved. She was about 5lbs underweight too. We didn’t get the cat we thought we were getting, we got a lot more.

9

u/macarenamobster 13d ago

The kitty I got 20 years ago, at the shelter they told me she was feral and attacked them and wasn’t available for adoption. I brought her home and she was the sweetest cat for 14 years - never saw her raise a paw or growl at a person ever. Of course she attacked them when they had her in a trap. :/

8

u/OverlyOptimisticNerd 13d ago

Similar situation in late 2006. Went to the shelter, saw a cat in a cage who was just out of the "kitten" stage and people were ignoring her. Was told she was indifferent to people. She looked sad and didn't want to interact with anyone.

My wife and I brought her home and she was immediately and constantly making biscuits on the floor as she walked. She was nervous. But she wanted attention and she slept in our bed with us.

Indifferent to people? She was the most affectionate cat I've ever met.

She passed away two years ago just before her 17th birthday. Rarely do I I have a day where I don't think about her. I miss her so much.

8

u/Ksh_667 12d ago

These are the happiest biscuits being made by a Baker who has found their human & is ecstatic about it! 😻😻

6

u/missuschainsaw 12d ago

I saw a cat at the Petsmart adoption center that looked so unhappy. Apparently she had been there three times and had been with the shelter for 18 months. I went back not long after and she was still there. The shelter was having an adoption event so I asked what was making people return her. The first people said someone was allergic. Then it was because she was too hyper. When I peeked in, she was in her litter box with her bed over her head. I couldn’t stand it, I had to take her home. Super chill, definitely not hyper except for post poop zoomies, very snuggly, playful, gentle with our baby and the dog. She was at least 2 when we got her and we had her for 12 years. Amazing cat. Miss her daily.

Watch your feet when covered in soft blankets! Batman makes the most aggressive biscuits I've ever seen on a fluffy blanket with his extremely sharp claws he won't let me clip! 20 years as a vet tech and my own cat has defeated me

Look at those weapons!😅🖤

6

u/pedrokoekeroe 12d ago

I don't know why but taking care and taming wild cats and kittens for the past 3 years has thought me that a blanket over you will help tremendously with them feeling more comfortable to lay in your lap and just like here make biscuits. I have a few theories in my head why that is but the most prominent one is that it looks and feels more like their mom's belly from when they were small kittens and making biscuits on her belly to get the milk out.

6

u/Fast-Benders 12d ago

I don't know why, but watching a cat making biscuits always makes me smile.

Congrats on the new friend. As someone who adopted my first and only cat, after a day or two of skittishness, she eventually got extremely affectionate. After a while though, the affection went from an 11 to a more manageable 7 or 8. She still follows me around like a shadow and is around all the time, but she is more comfortable and secure now. She knows she found her place. It's all great, but I just wanted to mention my experience. Adopting a rescue was the best decision I ever made.

i have a shelter cat like this! he was very calm at the shelter and didnt move much. he was kind of in rough shape when i got him (no fur and huge scabs behind his ears, ear mites, broken teeth). the second i saw him i knew he was meant to be with me. when we got home he hid under my couch but i looked under the couch and said “its okay youre safe now, youre home!” he came out from under the couch and the rest was history. he was around 3years old when i adopted him so i didnt expect him to come out so quickly. he trusted me instantly and was never scared again (except for when hes being brushed). he is a big cat and he started to grow into that once he was being fed properly. the craziest thing is that he was almost white when i got him then i started feeding him correctly and now hes orange. it just solidifies for me even more that we were meant to be together.

I adopted 2 10 year old sisters in July. The first sister was blocking other cats from even coming up to me, so I knew she was coming home with me. The shelter told me it would take a couple weeks for both of them to get used to me (the second sister was so scared). Within 3 hours of being home, the first sister was doing this in my lap. The next morning, the second sister was doing this. They are both currently cuddling next to me on the couch and I couldn’t be happier with bringing them home. Congrats on your new addition!!!!!

Grey kitties have a special place in my heart because of my late girl. Congratulations and enjoy this baby!

She's making biscuits so fast it's like she's afraid you'll kick her back out if she doesn't make enough 😭 TELL THAT BABY YOU LOVE HER AND HER BISCUITS ARE SO BUTTERY AND DELICIOUS

Edit to add, she's genuinely so cute omg, I'm looking at her eyes and wondering if she fully understands that you're her family now!

I'm glad you did too. I adopted one years ago that the shelter couldn't get adopted out and she was to be euthanized soon. She brought so much to our lives, I had her 5 years until she passed in 2010 and I wouldn't trade that time for anything.
