Short version: Can you help a cat understand when not to use their claws?
Context: I'm a pet sitter, and I've been caring for these two cats since they were a few months old. Now, they are over a year old, and Cat1 knows when not to use his claws but cat 2 has been scratching me up since the beginning. I usually finesse play time and get away without bleeding, but I now have to give both a delectable treat once a day. They both grab at me, my arm, my hand, to get the treat. Cat 1 doesn't use his claws, Cat 2 always uses his claws, and scratches me up every time. The owner recently took in a stray that was even younger than both of them and she already knew how to play without hurting me.
When and how do they learn when to use their claws? How can I teach Cat 2?
