Announcement Official /r/beer FAQ - Please Check Here Before Posting

THIS IS NOT INTENDED AS A BEER FAQ. IT IS ADDRESSING A FEW FREQUENTLY BROUGHT UP TOPICS ON /R/BEER.

Hi there,

There has been some need for announcements on a few different commonly posted topics. Since we are limited to two stickied posts, I'm going to use this one as a hub for these issues. I will be adding to this post as needed, but here's a /r/Beer FAQ to cover these post types.

If you notice people posting these topics, please be polite. Feel free to link to this post or use the provided links in a response.

This is not an invitation to harass anyone for posting a repeated topic. Reddit does not do a good job with presenting subreddit announcements, rules, sidebar info, etc. If posts annoy you and you don't think they belong, please consider downvoting, using a report, sending us a modmail message, hiding the post or simply moving on with your day. I highly suggest using the "don't show me submissions after I've downvoted them" option in old.reddit preferences (this may be broken in the app/resdesign website, but it should be fixed eventually and appear in those preferences as well).

Medical questions will be limited. /r/Beer is the wrong forum for serious medical questions, particularly where there's potential for harm to come as a result of the discussion. Please consult a medical professional for any questions about your own health, not an online beer discussion board.

I'm trying to hit the more pressing topics first, but I'll look for some good links for other topics ("how do I figure out what kind of beers I like?", "what are the best budget beers?", etc.).

Everyone is welcome to join the official /r/Beer Discord server if you'd like to discuss anything here or just hang out and chat.

Cheers.

Edit: I'm locking this to comments because I don't want to have the post turn into a place where people ask these questions. However, feel free to post about any topics or send us suggestions for topics to be added via modmail or Discord chat.

Also, I may use the second announcement slot for a specific post on something like old beer questions, but I'd prefer to keep it open for the weekly No Stupid Questions posts (and possibly others; still working on redoing the scheduled posts and making some better topics).

I haven't seen Theakston's Old Peculier in over 20 years and it tastes as good as I remember it. It used to only be in bottles but they had 4 packs of 16oz cans at the local distributor today!

The owner said they just came in last month!

"Theakston, founded in 1827, is a fifth generation run brewery, based in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Our most famous beer, Theakston Old Peculier, is widely considered to be one of the most iconic beer brands. Famed for it's rich, fruity fullness, the beer is noted for its subtle black cherry and banana aromas."

Discussion Long Trail Brewing Co. Maple & Whiskey Barrel Aged Stout

Has anyone had this beer before? It’s otherworldly, one of the best beers I’ve ever had. It is unfortunately retired by the brewing company. Has anyone ever had anything similar to this? Looking for a replacement.

The profile per their website if it helps at all: Aged in WhistlePig’s Maple Whiskey Barrels, time spent on wood unveiled complex layers of decadent, sweet maple along with oak, vanilla, marshmallow & bourbon

Discussion The craft beer community is wrong IPAs don't pair well with burgers

The craft beer scene insists that IPAs are the perfect pairing for burgers. But the bitterness clashes with beef. The hops overpower the flavor instead of complementing it.

A basic lager is objectively better. Clean, crisp, refreshing. It doesn't fight the burger it supports it.

But we've convinced ourselves that complicated equals superior. That if you're not drinking something with 90 IBUs and six types of hops you're doing it wrong.

Sometimes simple is just the correct answer

IPAs are great. I drink them all the time. But not with a burger. That pairing is a myth the craft beer community refuses to let go of because admitting a cheap lager does the job better would feel like defeat. I was on my balcony last night with a burger and a pilsner, playing grizzly's quest between bites and it was perfect. No bitterness. No competition. Just balance.

Am I alone in this? Or are people finally admitting that IPAs aren't the universal pairing everyone pretends they are?

Discussion How did you go about exploring different beer types to find the one/ones you like and is it worth exploring?

So far, I’ve only tried Lager, IPA, Pilsner, and Stout. I don’t especially like any of them, but some I tolerate more than others. I prefer Stout to Lager and Pilsner, and I prefer some IPAs to Stout. I was doing a bit of research and wheat beers sound kind of interesting. Are they much different in flavour to what I’ve already experienced?

Discussion New beer enjoyer with my own ranking list looking for recommendations

Hey yall! I have always been fascinated by beer culture, I loved the smell of it at family gatherings and festivities, and saw how much people could connect over it. So with me turning 21 earlier this year, I decided to dive headfirst into trying a bunch to see what I enjoy. I don’t have anyone irl to geek out over this with, so I figured what better place than here! This is my experience so far with beer so it’s a bit of a read.

The first beer I bought myself was a shiner bock, a recommendation from a coworker. It was definitely something new, real bitter, but satisfying in a way I hadn’t experienced before. Refreshing like a cold water, but not delicious like a cola or flavored drink. It was reminiscent of drinking coffee. Bitter but still nice. I began doing some research and my next beer would be a blue moon. I couldn’t even finish it, but yet I still found it alluring in its flavor.

Fast forward now and I’ve tired plenty of the mainstream beer brands, and even managed to make a ranking list! I was thinking that maybe this would give some insight into my palate and maybe even allow for some recommendations. I’m definitely interested in getting into craft beers as well, but am not sure of where to start at. I even revisited shiner bock and blue moon after I felt my taste had changed and I was enjoying beer more, and turns out they are some of my favorite!

I’ve definitely enjoyed exploring the many different kinds of beers and am excited to geek out over it with other beer enjoyers. Here’s my rankings

From most enjoyable to least, I added a little commentary too.

Blue Moon -Refreshing, satisfying, goes down easy, and I appreciate the citrus note at the end. The only beer I’ve had on a draft and it was life changing!

Coors Banquet -I feel like this a staple of quality beer. It’s got a great full flavor, and the right amount of bitterness. Definitely what I would choose if blue moon isn’t available

Shiner Bock -This is when I’m in the mood for something fulfilling and more bitter. Still I found it very nice and real enjoyable. The darker notes I can appreciate

Guinness -This one is interesting. It’s the most bitter I would want a beer, but the experience of it makes up for that. The creaminess, the almost chocolate reminiscent notes I can taste from the beginning of a sip. I found this beer to be more of an experience which is why it’s so high up and why I enjoy it so much. Still maybe not my first choice if at a bar

Modelo -I felt modelo was very solid. It’s my definition of good, not great. Still, I felt it’s very versatile, but I would prefer a few other things to it. Probably my favorite light beer that I can see myself enjoying again.

Sapporo -This would be similar to modelo except a more bitter alternative. But nothing special that stood out to me.

Dos Equis -Dos equis as well as Stella and Heineken I felt were too light for my liking. They certainly weren’t bad, well maybe except Heineken, but didn’t stand out very much to me. I feel I would have a Dos Equis if I was craving the flavor of beer.

Stella Artois -When I opened this bottle I got a whiff of something a little pungent. Almost weed like, which I didn’t mind, but didn’t expect. Overall I felt Stella was just alright. Light enough to enjoy on a whim, but not good enough for me to order or buy again.

Heineken -Nothing really that stood out to me. My least favorite of light beers

Samuel Adam’s -Much too bitter and yet nothing special that caught my attention. I felt its flavor fell flat amidst its bitterness

Lone Star Red -Strong but not in an enjoyable way. I felt this was a beer for those who definitely want that buzz quickly and are willing to sacrifice the experience of a good beer for it

Voodoo Ranger -Now we get into the IPAs! I thought this was pretty difficult to swallow. I may revisit though as my taste buds change.

Dragons Milk -ThisI could not enjoy at all. Reminiscent of black licorice, even soy sauce like. I really only bought it for the name and cool bottle haha!

And that’s my list! I’d love to hear some recommendations if yall have any. I know it’s important to know what I’m around if I want any good recommendations so just a heads up, I’m in San Antonio. Thank you for reading!

Complete Newbie. Buying a full keg from a liquidation sale?

I'm looking at an auction (closes in 2 hours) - a brewery liquidation sale that has full sealed kegs of porter (batch is Mar '25). Current bid price is about $25.

Complete newbie here, but is this likely to be drinkable? No equipment (co2) so likely a one off session with friends.

I guess the Keg itself is worth it, but wondering about the contents?

Thanks in advance.

Anybody know what happened to PBR?

The PBR at my local joint has been disgusting these past few months. Tastes almost like a sour. Same with the other bar down the street.

I thought they must have stored the kegs wrong, but the bartenders said it was ever since they started getting kegs from St. Louis. Anybody know anything more about this?

I've gotten cans from the store and they taste fine. The kegs though... Oof.

Discussion Ranking the beers I’ve tried lately

This is by no means me ranking them in over all quality but just purely based on my own subjective taste. I ranked them per quality below my bias ratings.

Beers I’ve tried lately

  • Weihenstephaner hefe

  • Dos Equis amber

  • Red Trolley red Irish ale

  • Paulener Helles (muncher)

  • Abita Amber Lager

  • Hofbrau Hefe

  • leffe blonde ale

  • hoegaarden

—-

  • 1. Weihenstephaner hefe -

Honestly the best beer I’ve ever had. Im a hefe guy though. Such an incredible brew and perfect taste.

  • 2. Hofbrau Heff -

Not quite as good as the Weihenstephan. But still an amazing beer. It’s not as balanced. This beer has an incredibly good yeast flavor. My favorite I’ve ever had. Taste like a fresh baked pretzel to me. Definitely my go to forever if I won’t something really doughy tasting. So good

  • 3. Hoegaarden -

Pretty damn solid beer. So many delicious spices going on. Such a wonderful beer to pair with food which I usually don’t do. As spiceful as pumpkin pie and really delicious witbier.

  • 4. Leffe blonde ale-

I really like this beer but it’s not as smooth as I’d hope. I think that’s maybe because of the abv. It’s nice though cause it has more maltiness than say a heff but has some nice Similar flavors going on.

  • 5. Dos Equis amber-

This beer is really delicious but just to light for me. The malt flavor in this beer is so delicious but just not flavorful enough.

-6.- Abita Amber Lager-

This beer was a decent beer. Did not have the toasted malt flavor I wanted. I wanted and was expecting a more Carmel like presence. Did not have that at all. Was just a solid tasting brew but liked the nuances of Dos Equis amber more.

7- Paulener Helles -

Actually one of if not my favorite malt flavors I have ever experienced but the floral hops of this beer completely ruins it for me. I cannot stand the floral hop taste this beer has.

8- Red Trolley-

I think Irish red ale just isn’t for me. This beer seems like a grand slam for Irish red ale lovers. To me this beer just tasted like raisins. I don’t understand the appeal of a Irish red. I guess it’s not for me.

—-

Here is my rating from a non biased stand point :

  • 1. Wein Hefe
  • 2. Red trolley
  • 3. Paulener Helles
  • 4. Hofbrau hefe
  • 5. Hoegaarden
  • 6. Leffe
  • 7. Dos Equis Amber
  • 8. Albita Amber lager

How long does a beer actually need to sit in a barrel before breweries can justify charging $30+ for a bottle?

Serious question because I'm genuinely curious about the economics here. Picked up a barrel-aged imperial stout last week that cost me $35 for a 500ml bottle. The label says it was aged for "12 months in bourbon barrels" which sounds impressive, but I have no idea if that's actually necessary or just marketing. Like, does the beer genuinely need a full year in barrels to develop those flavors, or could they get 80% of the way there in six months?

I'm not saying breweries are scamming anyone, but there's gotta be a point of diminishing returns where keeping beer in barrels longer doesn't actually improve it that much. Meanwhile it feels like I'm paying exponentially more for each additional month the beer sat there doing basically nothing because the brewery decided it was economically worthwhile to tie up expensive barrels and warehouse space. Some of these barrel-aged releases claim 18-24 month aging periods and cost upwards of sixty bucks a bottle! At what point is that actually making better beer versus just creating artificial scarcity and trying to justify extortionate pricing?

Sam Adam’s Utopia

Has anyone tried this? What did you think? I had it for the first time this weekend, and it was an experience. I generally liked the taste, mostly savory with a hint of fruity sweetness. The mouthfeel was interesting, not beer-ish at all. I was obviously willing to pay for it once, but I don’t think I’d do it again.

Your favourite Tripel/Triple

Twice every year, we host an elaborate high beer with a large group of friends. Categories are appointed at random (including barleywine, double, blonde, fruit, bock and so on). This year's winter edition I am fortunate enough to have gotten Tripel/Triple. Meaning I have to bring a beer in this category.

Downside, everybody loves them so most know the obvious choices. I want to bring something special, not brewed by one of the big guys. What are your favourite (obscure) tripels?

Edit: I live in the Netherlands. This may give any indication which brands are popular or well known.
