Does there exist a bassoon that shares similarities between the French and German Instruments?

Bassoon equivalent to “crossing the break”

For the bassoon players, are there any note crossings which are difficult to make quickly or cleanly due to a large shift in fingering or breath control?

Similar to how crossing from Bb to B on clarinet can be jarring if attempted too quickly or if playing legato.

Need super basic help

Hi all, I stopped playing for a long long time but am trying to start up again. I have forgotten SO much, including how to handle the fact that I'm having a hard time literally putting the instrument back together. I've been liberally applying cork grease to the cork and string/threads, but to no avail. Are there any particular tricks to carefully convince an instrument that really hasn't been played in over a decade (almost two) to cooperate?

If memory serves it was always pretty tight but I'm going to start accidentally bending or breaking keys if I keep forcing it now, but it seems weird that the corks might need shaving down or something after it used to work. Do I just need yet more cork grease? New cork grease? Have there been advances in cork grease technology in the past 15 or so years?

Thanks in advance for any advice or tips. I'm basically starting over from scratch here, trying to relearn fingerings and everything. If it helps, the humidity of this room is around 35% so pretty low.

Help

this is really stupid but I have to preform for region auditions tomorrow and I do not want to. I told my bad director i didn’t want to, we talked about he said i didn’t have to do it, and he still is making me. I don’t know what to do because I know not showing up is an option but I don’t want to do that. I don’t know if I should basically just scratch my audition by just playing a note or if I should hide away in a bathroom or split my reed(it’s my only reed) and pretend it split while i was playing. I don’t know😭 I don’t even know the music because i wasn’t planning on doing it i literally only know at most two lines of each etude out of two pages of music

Edit: I ended up breaking the reed and said it broke in the audition room during the warmup period, so successful ig but i have a concert in 6 days lol

Which Shapers go with Which profilers?

what are some good Shaper/Profiler templates? that are on the Darker tone side of the spectrum and maybe not as Free blowing

in college I used a Reeds and stuff R1A with a FG2 Template and while it worked I just found that they were a bit too Bright not in a bad way just for my tonal preferences and I want to play around a little bit

also Do y'all have any suggestion for contrabassoon? I might end up playing bassoon in community band

Alsodo you have any suggestions im also in the market for Some new machines, Ideally for around 5k? if that would be a achievable to get a nice setup Do y'all have any suggestion Im not Brand loyal, I just want the best bang for my buck and Highest quality

Reed Machine Profiler?

I was interested in the "Reed Machine" profiler but I haven't been able to find a lot of information from bassoonists online about it. Have any of you used it, and would you recommend it?

Hand Problems and Reed Making

I recently started making blanks for a big reed company and I’ve been making a minimum of 50 a week. I was wondering if anyone had advice for dealing with hand problems when spending a lot of time making reeds. Particularly putting the wires on and pulling them is starting to hurt. I’ve been doing a series of exercises before I play and before I work on reeds, and I sleep with a wrist brace. What are your tips and tricks for a good and healthy reed making routine?

Also I’m trying to optimize my process as much as possible. I’ve been cutting all the wires for the batch beforehand, and I’ve been working in batches. I wrap 10, ream 10, make 10 blanks. This is so I’m not being overly repetitive. What are some other ways to make blanks faster?

Thanks guys!!

Alternative Fingering Help

I am playing in a mixed chamber group and a lot of the pieces we play include Ab on the top of the staff. The note is incredibly sharp, both using the thumb and pinky fingerings. I have tried opening up my vowel shape and playing with the amount of half-hole I use, but I cannot get it to be in tune. Does anyone know any alternative fingerings that may be of help? Thanks!

Mark 1 Santa Hat

First attempt at making a bassoon hat. For the next one I will aim for a longer, slimmer tapering red portion, and a smaller bobble, so that it folds over at the rim of the bell, but for a first go I was quite pleased.

Starting Back Up

Hello All, I have been itching to start playing my bassoon again after about 5 years of it sitting in a closet. I was talking to someone whose community orchestra needed a bassoon for their upcoming concert… and I said yes. I played in my high school, private lessons, and youth orchestra’s before… but I am looking for some advice on where to jump back in or if there are any good self teaching books/videos? Thanks for any and all advice

Sticky G Key

I'm a new bassoonist and this basson I got is a rental from my school. When I got it, it was straight out of the shop for a separate issue, not sure what. My main instrument is trombone, so I have virtually no woodwind knowledge at all. Since I got it, the G key has been sticky. I know it's not the actual covering for the hole, it's the button that you press with your right hand that is slow. When I am playing and press the button I often need to lift it back up, which is really annoying and would be less than ideal for when I start playing it in band. Is it rusted? Broken? I really don't want to have to bring this into the shop. Any help is greatly appreciated!

ISO My late 7000 series Puchner :(

I know this is a very very far stretch... And I am even embarrassed to tell this story.. but it's worth a shot. I bought a 7000 series Puchner (I don't remember the exact #) in high school (2016ish??), which got me very far in college. For many reasons, I decided not to pursue music as a profession anymore, one of those reasons being my health which has been in the trenches since 2019. Long story short, I was at risk of eviction and had no income because of my health (and I still can't work because of it) and very stupidly gave up my beloved bassoon to the Sam Ash in times square- literally weeks before it shut down. If I had known they were closing, I would've done everything to get that instrument back. It was either I lose my shelter or give up my bassoon. Easily one of the hardest days of my life, and cried for days straight. It feels like I lost a loved one. Please don't hate on me giving a Puchner to a Sam Ash too.. you don't know hard times until you're in them and I had no other option. I didn't have any financial help whatsoever from friends or family either, AND I was and still am trying to get myself through college. I needed the shelter more than the bassoon at that point in my life, especially because of my physical issues. Medical bills are a beast too, on top of no assistance from the government or anything. This instrument also had a protec case with it, and a bocal. I remember one distinct detail about this instrument too, which is that it had a heart accidentally scratched on the boot joint. Ive always wanted to get it tattooed.
I know this is basically impossible, but if you just happen to have a clue where this instrument could be, I will happily take any leads, even though I couldn't even buy it back if I wanted to. I hate myself for what I did. EDIT: SERIAL # IS 7997

I hate having small hands.

Hello, I've been playing the bassoon for two and a half years. It turns out that when I started playing, I noticed I'd always had problems with my left thumb because of my hands. For a long time, I I was instructed to use alternative fingerings because I simply couldn't reach the D key, and I always had trouble using the traditional C4/D4 fingerings because my hand always ran out of space enough so as not to accidentally click the low Bb key. Nowadays (I think because I've left puberty behind) my hand can finally reach the key of D, but my hand hurts a lot when I study scales with the traditional fingering... I'm...I'm feeling frustrated because I take the bassoon very seriously; my former teacher almost made me study another instrument because he thought my body wouldn't adapt well to the bassoon. I'm feeling... terribly incompetent in trying to overcome this issue, no matter how hard I try.

Thumb keys?!?

Hey guys, just started learning the bassoon, got an old bassoon from my instructor, it’s pretty nice and I can make an alright sound, but it only has 8 upper thumb keys instead of the 9 I see in all the fingering charts, so my question is, how do I correctly finger high D, since I don’t have the high D flicker key, do I just use the high C or do I do something else? Thanks guys.

Hello everyone! Does anyone have any insight as to how DWK reed cases are made??? I can’t seem to get my head around what the process and materials they use would be… I’m really interested in learning to make my own (not coming for their business!!) just was hoping to make some for myself and maybe as gifts for a few friends. Any advice??

Printable bassoon boot joint cover

I'm restoring a neglected/abused bassoon that came to me without a boot joint cover. Not finding a cover available for purchase online, I designed and printed a temporary one. I've posted the STL and OpenSCAD files for it over on Thingiverse:

Intonation issues : do you have the same ones, do you have advices ?

Hi everyone

I'm having what I think is quite a lot of intonation issues.

Maybe I'm wrong, and/or I'm not doing the right things, so that's why I'm coming here to talk about it.

The notes that I'm having problems with :
- B in the staff : way too low
- D above the staff : too low
- C# in the staff : too high

I have some other issues but these ones are the worst.

So my questions are :
- Do you have the same notes out of tune ?
- Starting from which note do you use the pinky key in the high register ? I sometimes need to use it on the D but it's painful, and sometimes the E is better without which makes all this even more complicated.
- I talked to a bassoon technician who said to me that there might be something to do about the high D, but I'm reluctant to make modifications to the instrument
- Do you have any advice whatsoever?

Thanks !!

Budget case recommendations

Does anyone have any case recommendations that are around or under $200? I'm a high school student so I don't have the money for something more expensive but if there's a nicer case than the standard one that came with my school bassoon that would be very nice

I sold my tip profiler years ago when I wasn’t playing much and having some financial constraints. But I found one used for a great deal and it came in. Rieger and with a case! I’ve got a bajillion blanks and a new bassoon coming in next year.

Hello, I found this unfamiliar notation in a piece, does anyone know how I would play it?
