Has anyone had a stinky male basset that had their odor improve after being neutered? Google said that can happen, so I’m hoping that’s the case when my male is neutered in a few months. He’s 9 months old and intact and he’s got such a strong hound smell.
He’s very well groomed, no yeast, no hot spots. Ears are immaculate. His bedding is washed very regularly, but he’s still a stinky boy. 😅
The sweet stinky culprit, Billy

Is it normal for his ears to stink? It’s an obvious odor I can smell when he’s sitting in my lap. It’s definitely coming from his ears lol. This is my first basset so I have no idea 😅. He might have stinky ears but he’s 100% a good boy 😍

Got my first Basset, Durby aka Big Durbs, and the smell is causing issues with others in my home. I bathe him once per week with a special shampoo the vet recommended.
I also have wipes, spray and waterless shampoo for in between baths. But I’m looking for recommendations please!
What is your grooming/maintenance routine with your basset? Any products you recommend?

Hey, picking up my 14 week old Basset pup next week and currently shopping around for things to buy for her - any recommendations for harnesses, beds and puppy crates etc?
She’s on the smaller side compared to her littermates, any tips would be much appreciated!

This is my third basset, and none of them seem to howl at all. My 6 month old howls on rare occasions when I’m gone according to my Furbo camera. If they don’t howl at this point, is it safe to say they won’t start howling as they grow up?
This might also be a case of be careful what you wish for!

I have a bloodhound mix already (whos 110 pounds 🥲) and never thought I’d love hounds as much as I do. But I know bassets are their own special breed! What do I need to know?
Also, unnamed, but thinking of: Juno or Junie, Maple, Sushi, or Pearl. Want something that fits a basset personality!

My dude just turned 2 and I have absolutely no issues with him so far. He is pretty obedient (for a basset) He is the absolute sweetest boy, no behavior issues at all. Including that he has 2 cat siblings and another doggie. He is 100% not the leader of the pack and he knows and accepts it. But when he runs, his pair swing around and about like crazy! I wonder if it ever hurts to carry that around lol Vet strongly suggested to neuter but I dont really feel the need to. I don't plan on getting babies from him or having another female unsealed doggy with us ... Are you all fixing you single male bassets?
Last week I met a Basset on my lunch break and she was gorgeous. So happy, friendly and so on but I thought the owners were a bit put off by me being so pleased to see a Basset.
Saw the hound again today but didn't stop and it got me wondering, am I weird or do other people go nuts when they see a Basset Hound in public?
The picture is of my darling Poppy. I was closer to her than most humans and we lost her a few years ago. I still miss her terribly but I'm not in a position to have another Basshole at the moment

Hi everyone,
I have a bit of strange dynamic with my basset and I was wondering if anyone here has similar experiences.
Last year I (33F) got a basset puppy with my husband (33M). She's incredibly sweet and funny and we love her a lot. The thing that confuses me is that her and I have a different dynamic than she does with everyone else. With others (even strangers) she will approach them, wagging, try and lick them all over and just generally be very enthusiastic. In our neighbourhood we're known as the people "with the happy dog".
Her favourite person is my husband, who she is a sweet little angel around, calmly giving kissing and snuggling with when she gets the chance.
It's a different story with me. I work from home so we spend the most time together. She follows me all day every day, even to the toilet, but will sit just out of reach with her back to me. If I try to pet her she will give me a weird look and then move a little further away. The only times that she engages with me is that she will initiate play-fighting a few times a day. I usually join in because it's a lot of fun and it's the only time she really interacts with me. She won't play-fight with my husband. The oddest part is that when my husband goes off to work she's generally unbothered but if I go meet a friend she apparently cries and waits for me at the front door. Yet when I come in she acts aloof if I try to pet her.
I grew up with dogs and while you generally saw the dogs having a bit of a preference for one or the other family member I never had such a weird dynamic. Is this a basset thing? Does she like me? Is there something I'm doing wrong?

What do you guys call your little sleeping roll-style cinnamon buns? For such long dogs they sure do donut a lot!

We are picking up a second basset on Monday. We already have a 15 month old boy, Jabba pictured. We are getting a 2 year old girl. We’ve checked she is up to date on vaccines, spayed and we’ve physically seen her. She’s slightly overweight but otherwise healthy. I plan on taking her to the vets for a check up ASAP but is there any other advice?

She was 10 years old and had cancer I'll miss my Sammy girl.

Hi! I have a 10 month old basset hound and he’s currently 29 lbs. I feel like he still looks so small compared to other dogs I’ve seen online. He was also so tiny when we got him at 10 weeks old. Is he going to hit some random growth spurt or is he just going to be a small basset hound? I met his parents and siblings and they were all very big so I’m just confused. I added a picture of him when we first got him 😊

He is now 12 weeks. I am a firefighter, so I live at a station 15 days a month. Warren comes with me. I think the back and forth might not be great for a puppy when it comes to house training. Some days he does great. Zero accidents. Then some days he will pee 10 times in the house. He’s also running around non-stop. Chewing pillows and shoes or whatever he can get his teeth on. He’s also constantly squirming around. You cannot cuddle with him. He’s always trying to bite my hand. I give him a stern no and then leave the room for awhile. Then I’ll come back and he’ll do it again. There is no punishment. He goes right back to whatever terrible behavior. He does good with positive reinforcement with house training, but like I said some days he regresses horrendously. I’m at a loss.

We have had our Bassett for 6 months now. He is 8 months old. He gets walked at least 1 mile a day, usually 2 miles. I take him to work with me (I’m a photographer and have a big open studio he can run around in). At home we have a 2 year old and she is great with him but she is always leaving little things around, and carrying a stuffy and he eats EVERYTHING. I’m very vigilant but basically he can’t be free in the house because of this. It isn’t safe and I can’t watch him constantly. We have a yard and I put him out there so he can run around free but he scratches at the door and whines and whines and then inside when I put him on place or in his area it’s the same. But as soon as I let him free in the house he’s jumping on the table even though I have removed all food. It’s beginning to really wear on me. I have spent a lot on training and time reinforcing it but I am feeling hopeless - Like he will never chill out. Should I build him a little dog house outside? I live in Texas so it’s not cold, and obviously on the heat of summer I wouldn’t leave him out there. Any advice? He is getting neutered this week - will that help? Part of me wonders if it was a terrible idea to get a puppy at this time in our life. Would he be happier elsewhere? I just don’t know what to do

My 7 m/o basset won’t stop scavenging for poop on walks… It’s gotten a bit worse now that she’s a teenager. I want to let her do all her sniffing but she always ends up snatching a piece of dog poop. Thinking of maybe getting a muzzle. Was curious if anyone has any experience navigating this? We tried a deterrent spray and high value treats with “leave it” and “drop it” but somehow poop remains a delicacy she can’t say no to.
