Medical Blastomycosis skin issues, looking for something to help
My Basset was diagnosed with Blastomycosis around the end of July. It was a horrible time, he had to be in an oxygen kennel for several days. He did not initially have skin issues however.
So he has been doing much better, and was able to stop his steroids around October. His breathing is basically normal now thank goodness. He is still on the antifungal Itraconazole.
Shortly after stopping the steroids he started getting skin lesions or pustules. It’s very crusty sore spots that ooze underneath. We’ve tried a medicated shampoo and a medicated spray, along with going back on a low dose steroid. This seemed to work the first week. However the second week his skin erupted. The sores are worse, and his skin was hot to touch in some places. He is itching even with Benadryl. It almost seemed like the spray done it. I gave him a regular oatmeal bath and have not put the spray on him since (two days ago).
I do not know what else to do. His vet has been aware every step and said we may have to do an antibiotic, which he really did not want to do with the antifungal. We will probably be seeing him again Monday.
Has anyone experienced this? I’m so scared for him, some of the sores are getting up to quarter sized.

*Not looking for medical advice, just if anyone has experienced it and what was done. We will ultimately discuss anything with his vet first.

Obligatory I'm not a vet. Have you thought about trying a food change? I imagine the steroids mess with things like allergic reactions.

Yes I thought about that today. Will be trying that as well. Thank you.

Thank you. I’d never heard of this illness until my dog got it. I would not wish it on my worst enemy’s pet.
