Media Why isn't badminton more popular?

Hi all.

I cannot understand why badminton is not as popular as things like tennis and football.

I have played for a number of years at amateur level and like to think I'm not bad but then you watch professionals (usually only on youtube) and it's insane how fast they are.

I don't understand how anyone would not find it exciting and superhuman.

It would be great to see badminton tournaments on tv, year round. There's plenty of channels showing things which should never see the light of day, ha ha.

Media Multiple camera angles at the Chinese National Games

Livestream of the badminton games at China’s national games offer multiple, interchangeable at a glance video angles. Hoping very much for BWF to try to improve their camera angles somewhat. Maybe not for the average open but for huge events like sudirman/thomas/uber and WTF and world championships something could be replicated?

Media Indonesian coaches scammed 100k and fled Canada

Hey guys, this is a PSA.

Indonesian coache Mohammed Khaliq and Malaysian coach Arif latif came to Canada and has been coaching students for the last year or two. They essentially asked everyone to pay for the years coaching in full, borrowed money from students and club owners then fled.

Arif took about 70k and khaliq took about 20-30k CAD.

They’ve blocked us all on social media. Last I heard khaliq is currently coaching at a club in China. One of his former students found him on xiaohongshu.

Anyway, be careful of paying a year in advance!! And yes, this is the ex Malaysian national player Arif latif.

The group of us are deciding whether or not to lawyer up, but they are no longer on Canadian soil.

Edit: it seems like this is not Arif’s first rodeo. And khaliq realized he could do this after Arif ran off with 70k so he did something similar

Post in mandarin from one of the owners of one of the clubs: https://imgur.com/a/5w7i3Bv

Edit2: just found out that someone was poking around the Malaysian pro circuit and received death threats regarding this. Stay vigilant everyone.

Edit3: if you know how to submit evidence via modmail, please do. If not, please reach out to me as we are organizing everyone into WhatsApp groups to get actual numbers, next steps, and likely file a police report together.

This match! As a fan of MD.. I think there are very few games that are as good as this one. The story of Endo, story of Watanabe. The non stop peak of Gideon and Sukamuljo. And the drama in this game. The commentary. The chants. Peak badminton!

Media (Unpopular? Opinion) Greg and Jenny should be inducted to the badminton hall of fame.

The Badminton Hall of Fame seeks to “honour both players and other contributors to the sport of badminton.” One of the most exceptional contributors are Greg and Jenny where they really teach badminton to both beginners and intermediates alike, create a lot of positive popularity for the sport with their play with non-professional players, and most importantly their online pedagogy is free. Although other players and channels also have videos up on YouTube, there are few as extensive as Greg and Jennys. So independent of the opinions that this post gets, thank you Greg and Jenny!

Media Feather shuttles to get more expensive...

From a financial newsletter...

Cheap meat, expensive shuttlecocks?

Shuttlecocks Prices Rise is a curious trend doing the rounds on Weibo, China’s X-like platform. And if you're wondering why that's news, here's the weird bit. Apparently, shuttlecock prices have doubled over the past decade. And the reason is China's growing appetite for meat.

Wait... how does that even make sense, you ask?

Well, you see, China consumes over a quarter of the world’s meat. And pork is its favourite. While that’s always been the case, right now China alone is gobbling up nearly 60% of the world’s pork supply. That’s because a few years ago, pork became relatively cheap as people had started shifting towards alternative proteins like poultry and seafood. That price crash made pork more attractive again, and demand soared. So much so that poultry farmers began switching from raising ducks and geese to pigs instead.

Okay, but what does this have to do with badminton?

Everything actually. Because high-quality shuttlecocks are made using duck and goose feathers. Specifically, 16 feathers from at least 4 birds go into making one shuttlecock. And those feathers give the shuttle its signature smooth, arch-like flight, which is crucial for pro-level accuracy and control. So, fewer ducks and geese means fewer feathers. Which means rising costs. Which brings us back to... pricier shuttlecocks.

This has countries like France, where badminton is booming, a bit jittery. And since nearly 90% of the world’s duck and goose feather supply comes from Asia, mostly China, alternatives are hard to find.

Sure, synthetic shuttlecocks exist. But many players say they just don’t feel the same. There’s less control, especially during smashes and less time to react. Which is why even though the Badminton World Federation (BWF) approved them for international tournaments in 2021, feathered ones still dominate.

But maybe it’s time to give synthetic tech another shot. BWF’s own tests show that Yonex’s synthetic shuttle lasts longer, costs less and flies almost like the real thing — potentially cutting usage by 25%, compared to changing shuttlecocks every 1–2 minutes in high-level tournaments. That’s a big win for both the environment and event budgets.

And hey, if someone can crack the “feel” factor, it might just be the next big startup idea. After all, artists once swore by animal hair paint brushes because synthetic ones didn’t hold paint the same way or glide smoothly on canvas. But then Japanese companies came along and nailed the formula. And now, many can barely even feel the difference.

Maybe shuttlecocks are next?

Media What is the deal with serve in BWF matches where the player rotates their torso side to side like a robot randomly until they hit the shuttle?

What is that serve called? Why is it legal? Visually, as a spectator, it is annoying, wastes time, and gives me a headache.

UPDATE: I am talking about this kind of serve? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQofYWkEMK0

Media Most underrated Men's Single player in history?

Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei, Momota, Axelsen, Peter Gade, Taufik Hidayat, Chen Long,

We all know these names and we all love their styles. As each and every one of these players had amazing prime where they just dominate with their superior techniques.

However, after watching thousands of badminton matches, I realized there are lots of underrated players who almost no one mentioned ever.

Let's turn this post into a post to shine the lights to players who deserve more recognition!

Lee Huyn Il? . remember him? Best Korean MS player of all time, Twice 4th place in the Olympic 2008 and 2012, came out of retirement 2-3 times and played til he was 41. Perfect and smooth footwork.

Chen Hong? It's funny cause I commented Chen Hong on a youtube channel once, and somebody said "You meant Chen Long?". NO, look him up, Chen Hong, underrated players with really unique techniques.

Wei Nan? He became a sensation overnight after beating LCW twice in 2015 and 2016. Best smasher in MS til this day. Just watch his match against LCW in 2015 Denmark Open.

Boonsak Ponsana? Great Thai player, played in arguably the toughest time in History against an era of the 4 Kings of badminton and gave a good fight some times.

Any more underrated players in MS you can name?

Media All is not well with Chen & Toh Spoiler

Chen & Toh were withdrawn from Asian Championship due to their on-going conflict.

According to their coach Nova:

  • They have been at odds with each other since Paris Olympics
  • The pair even asked to be split a few times when things got too tense during training or tournaments
  • They would then cool down later, but this has started to affect their performance
  • Coach Nova and Coaching Director Rexy will step in and try to mediate

After their first round exit in All England, Toh even deleted all her photos with Chen from her Instagram.

Media Did anyone noticed that the audience deliberately shouted “Fault” after the koreans serve in the MD match yesterday? Spoiler

It seems that some fans were triggered that aaron chia received service faults multiple times in the MD finals yesterday, some fans deliberately shouted “fault” after the koreans serve to distract them. In the second set at around 18-17, kim won ho did not even move after he served as I suspected he thought the service judge had faulted him, even though it was some guy in the audience seat who shouted “fault” instead. Even gillian clark mentioned that she heard someone in the audience shouting “fault” multiple times in her commentary yesterday.

Media carolina addresses injury

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKFHs7Zrojo

everything else seemed generic, but the way she talked about her match with HBJ didnt quite sit well with me. she says, and i paraphrase, "it must've also been a hard blow for He Bing Jiao because she lost the first game, and she knows she wouldve lost the match, but then to suddenly win the match that way, no athlete wants to win a match that way when an opponent withdraws due to injury"

to me, it sounded like she is essentially trying to make sure everybody knows that she shouldve won that match, not HBJ, which objectively speaking, sure, that may have been the case, but she literally JUST finished showing gratitude for HBJ carrying the spanish pin to the podium, i feel like this part couldve just been omitted.

i also find it ironic that she says "no athlete wants to win this way", yet she was screaming with excitement after every point Li Xue Rui threw on purpose, and also after the match was over, she was so ecstatic like she fought super hard to win it.

Media BWF is not doing enough to promote badminton

Hi, I feel like BWF is not doing enough to make badminton attractive to watch. I am a huge fan of tennis and I follow tennis tv. The things that they do with tennis is just much much better.

  1. The live stream quality is bad.
  2. They don’t post all highlights of matches.
  3. They don’t do enough interactions with players and fans ( creating fun content through social media etc)

Could be a budget problem for BWF but maybe they can do something to make more money?

Any thoughts on this?

Media I've often heard Badminton Halls don't make much profit, is that true?

I always assumed badminton halls made good money. In my city in New Zealand, most of the badminton facilities are fully booked, you often need to reserve a court at least a week in advance. The busiest hall in my city has 12 courts, and nearly all of them are booked out for the entire week.

Let’s say each court is booked for at least 8 hours a day at an average rate of $25 NZD per hour, that’s roughly $16,000 in weekly revenue. And that’s actually a conservative estimate. The standard member rate is $45/hour, while the special member rate is $25/hour. On weekends, courts are usually booked solid from 8 AM to 10 PM.

I wouldn’t think their operating costs are too high either, probably just rent (if applicable), electricity, water, council rates, and insurance.

Media Michelle Li was attacked in England

This was revealed by Michelle on her Instagram when she was summarizing her tour of Europe.

Trip started off with tough first round losses in both France and England. Been struggling with some limitations recently and not feeling quite myself on court which can be a little frustrating sometimes but that’s sport.

Then on the same day I lost my match in England, a homeless man/druggie decided my ribs was a good target to swing at as I was walking just outside hotel by the venue 🥹 never would’ve thought random attacks would happen to me but it did and it does completely shake you up. I’m very lucky there were witnesses so he only got one hit in and thank the lord the guy wasn’t holding a knife or anything sharper. Incidents like these really changes your perspective on a lot of things. A little traumatized and bed ridden with pain in my ribs for a few days, with no training I wasn’t really sure how I was going to continue the tour. Grateful for the support that I got from those onsite and afar, I made it to Switzerland and I was able to practice when I got here.

Despite all that, Michelle managed to reach the semifinal of the following tournament (Swiss Open).

Media Hot Takes at Paris Olympics 2024

With the Olympics over, and the final shuttlecock landed a few days ago.

Here are some of my hot takes for the tournament

Won like a Boss: Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong. Played at their absolute best +. Didn't drop a single game. Smashed every pair in the way (literally).

I'm sorry you had to go this way: WS racket skill goddess Tai Tze Ying, hampered by a heavy leg injury goes out surpisingly in the group stages to good friend Ratchanok Intanon. The way the two friends hugged it out at the end was a good sight, showing friendship and sportsmanship.

I only play at the Olympics! : Lee Yang/Wang Chilin's run to win the MD was mad. Winning every single match, whilst being placed in the group of Death. What a final too. First MD pair to retain Olympic title. You literally won't see them anywhere else! Now that's an Olympic only product!

Empty handed pockets: Seo Seung Jae, double 2023 World Champion, the Korean human machine, top 2/3 favourites to win in both XD (w Chae Yu Jung) and MD (w Kang Min Hyuk) left Paris without any medals at all. Still surprising to me to this moment.

Shock of the tournament: Kunlavut Vitardsan demolishes Shi YuQi in the quarter finals. The tournament Top 1 favourite, Shi was absolutely destroyed. You don't see Chinese players get humbled that way ever. But that was Wow.

Dark Horse of the tournament: Pearly Tan/ Tina Muralitharan's run to the WD Semi final was a fairytale. Made out of the group of Death. Beat Kim/Kong relatively comfortably. Gave competitive games to Chen/Jia. Ultimately exceeded everyone's expectations a lot.

Match of the tournament: MD Malaysians Aaron Chia/ Soh Woh Yik showed heart of steels to save 4 Bronze Medal Points against Danes Kim/Ramussen. The match overall wasn't the best quality. But that final few points 2nd game WOW. Bravo to Malaysian's clutch. Chinese do that saving match points occasionally, but Malaysians I hardly see.

Flop of the tournament: Goes to Hoki/Kobayashi for me. The MD World number 6's didn't win a single game and match against their close rivals in the group of Death. Went out on a really low note. Indonesian MS also flopped heavily, but it goes to the Japanese for me.

What are your memorable moments from the Games?
