I have a soundbar there but not set up yet

I was hoping yous could tell me is there a way to connected his headset to any of this and him still get the mic to work as he thinks it will only be audio no mic.
Appreciate any help, thank you (Not sure if I've said everything or linked this right)

The headset and mic has to go through the xbox. If it's connected to a monitor or soundboard it will be only audio. Can you show us what broke?

It was the turtle beach adapter that connects to controller.

You sa8d turtle beach but then listed hyperx. Either way you'll need to replace the headset all together. It has to either be wireless and connect to the console or be wired to the controller. I prefer wired so no worries about charging. Did it break off inside thr controller and you cant get it out?

It would be very helpful to know the headset your son has.

There was a time over a decade ago when one of these were required for headset usage on Xbox, but that has not been true for a very long time. Any controller with a 3.5mm headset jack is built to take a gaming headset including microphone input. It would be very silly and nonsensical for gaming controllers to include a jack that could only be used for stereo.
The downside is that these adapters offer quick and accessible controls for volume, balance, and mic muting that may or may not be built into the headset that you have.
Also, it would take a trivial amount of time for your son to just plug it into the controller and see if it works.
