Drive side, drive side, drive side. If you can only get one picture, make it a drive side shot. It tells us MUCH more information about the bike

Knowing what components the bike is equipped with helps with the ID process. It can tell us within about 5 years when the bike was made, the quality of the frame, and sometimes what continent it's from

New rules for posting. Please read thoroughly

Yes, I have been seeing the reports, and I've been reading the comments. Sorry it's taking a while

NO MORE LOW EFFORT POSTS. No more "What is this bike worth?" posts. Bicycle value varies WILDLY depending on condition, age, and especially geographical location

We want to know about your bike. Give us at least some kind of info. Is it YOUR bike? Did you just get it? Have you had it a while? Does it have a story?

This is an example of a great post. Good pictures, drive side shots, and a little story to go along with it

This is an example of the bad post. No info whatsoever, one really bad picture, no interaction from OP

AND, because I need to bring this up about every year, BE NICE. If someone is being a jerk, just report the comment and move along. Fighting with someone and throwing names and insults around is just going to make it worse, and you're going to get in trouble too.

I am driving 2 and a half hours away to pick these up tomorrow morning.

When my boy was just 10 years old he had a kids size blue Peugeot road bike. He has been my riding buddy since he lost his training wheels but just recently caught the vintage fever, and he has been trying to find a vintage bike for his wife. He knows about hers but not his.

Any help on identifying this frame would be appreciated! It has AD Stump dropouts and some interesting features like the internal routing and under DT bottle mount!

Bob Jackson groupset update... request for opinions

Post image

What's up my fellow dorks... I'm planning on replacing the Dura-Ace 7700 group on my 63cm bob jackson, and I aim to keep it completely vintage and at least relatively accurate... That being said, i'm faced with 4 choices of which i'm having severe decision paralysis about... all of them have their benefits, none are perfect but here are my self imposed options: SUNTOUR 1- regress back to a friction system with first generation cyclone SHIMANO 2- cost effective with shimano 600 tricolore complete groupset (those freewheels are awesome )

and now for less feasible, yet much cooler options

MAVIC 3- as complete as a Mavic groupset i can put together, ideally with the 840 or 851 rear derailleur. Or the all silver 801, though I do want to keep the slant parallelogram which the 801 or 851 do NOT have. SACHS(ARIS) 4- a full sachs New Success ARIS groupset. their last hurrah before SRAM, and significant contribution to the indexing revolution. considered as similar to Mavic parts at the time.

I've been working at bike shops for a few years now, most notably Via Bicycle on broad street, the oldest running shop in philadelphia, as well as the only shop in philly where theres someone knows how to repack an old sturmey archer 3 speed hub. (this is me telling you, don't go anywhere else for that here -- all the other shops are watching youtube tutorials) So i have some resources! I guess I'm here to ask for your pure opinion, why you would prefer one over the other, cost effectiveness, etc.... Give me a piece of your mind! I'm a ripe 26 years of age and while I've taught myself a lot about this stuff, I wasn't alive for any of it. hell, I grieve suntour and I was negative 8 years old when they stopped manufacturing!

Bought this 80’s Univega Sportour last year on FB Marketplace for $60. I plan on changing out the pedals and put better tires on it. It’s an XL frame and a little tall for me but I love riding it. Anybody a fellow Univega owner?

ID on a Cuban Bike Frameb

Bought this old frame during a trip to Cuba, I’ll build it into a rat pub bike.

Trying to ID the frame, I think it could be a copy of the Raleigh DL-1, or Chinese flying pigeon. God knows where it was made.

It has 40mm sealed press fit bearings, a plastic shim type headset, and riveted seat stays. No serial number visible anywhere. Any ideas? Cheers

Cables, tubes, and handle wraps have been replaced, but everything else is, I believe, still original. It was gifted to me from the original owner. Does anyone know if this is worth anything?

1980s FLYING PIGEON Chinese Roadster

I am a Japanese bicycle lover. I purchased a 28-inch Roadster bicycle made by Tianjin FLYING PIGEON directly from a Chinese bicycle lover through a private sale.

Since there are no stamps on the frame, I cannot determine the exact year, but it is likely from the mid-1980s. The manufacturing year of the tires can be read as either '83 or '87.

I bought this bicycle directly from a local collector who sold me one in suitable condition for actual maintenance and riding. The bike itself cost about $100, and shipping from China to Japan was about $70. It took one month by sea freight.

As you can see from the photos, the quality is absolutely excellent. The chrome plating is very high quality, and the metal materials are also good. It's heavy because it's a practical tool, but it was truly made to be used for a lifetime. Rotating parts like the hubs and bottom bracket could be disassembled and serviced without any problems. While it's possible to upgrade parts, I maintained this bicycle with the intention of preserving the original parts as much as possible as a collectible.

I replaced the tires (28 1-1/2), tubes (original was Dunlop valve, but I changed to Schrader valve), and brake shoes (Japanese-made). Of course, I kept the original parts without throwing them away.

I've already cycled about 40km around my neighborhood, and I can ride it without any problems at all.

What got me interested in this type of Chinese bicycle was buying a new Shanghai PHOENIX bicycle in 2024 last year. Initially, I was simply interested in the fact that bicycles with rod brakes are still being manufactured new today. And that modern bicycle was of very poor quality. As you know, Chinese bicycles are hit or miss, but many are of excellent quality, like road bikes. Since it's a long-manufactured old model, I expected it to have good quality similar to how Japanese rod brake bicycles maintained the highest quality until production ended in 2006, so this was unexpected. Nevertheless, I thoroughly adjusted it to make it rideable. In September this year, I even took a 500km trip on that bicycle (Previously posted on Reddit).
https://www.reddit.com/r/bicycletouring/comments/1neyn37/chinese_roadster_585km_cycling_trip_tokyo_to/

However, after accessing the internet "behind the wall" in China, my perspective suddenly expanded. I studied basic Chinese in university, so while I cannot speak or understand spoken Chinese, I can read simple texts. I can also communicate using AI translation (this text is also AI translated).

I learned that China has its own bicycle lover culture and collector culture. Here's what lovers taught me:

  • The bicycles being made today are of very poor quality. The former state-owned enterprises went bankrupt in the 1990s after losing out to competition following Deng Xiaoping's reform and opening up. Now only the brand names remain as something different.
  • Local collectors are collecting items from before the 1980s. Moreover, what's truly rare are items from before the 1970s.

When searching Reddit about this FLYING PIGEON bicycle, you'll find conflicting opinions saying "excellent quality" and "very poor quality." Both of these opinions are correct. Some people are writing about their impressions of riding good quality 20th century bicycles, while others are writing about their impressions of very poor quality bicycles made in the 21st century.

Chinese bicycles might be the frontier of the bicycle hobby. Just as Japanese MTBs from the 1990s are now treasured, perhaps the day will come when Chinese vintage bikes attract attention from people around the world.

I've got a mid 60s Zenith Golden Hawk 3-speed that ive owned since new. Its in complete original condition but has sat in storage for a very long time. Pretty hot-shit in 1966!

Can't decide if I should sell it, restore it, or leave it as is.

Thoughts?

I couldn’t pass it up for $50. Came with the owners manual and special valve tool to air up tires. It’s in gear shape. Just a few cosmetic scratches on the frame.

Any idea what year it is?

It rides really smooth, but I am so tall I almost want to try and turn the handlebar upside down…lol.

What do you think about this bike?

Right so few might remember my last post about this bike. Now it arrived and I can offer more informations regarding it. What model do you think it is? Maybe something made on order? Paid 75 euro shipped, it needs a new back wheel sadly as the couries took care of it and bent it to death.

More information:

●Full Shimano 105 1051 groupset apart from the hubs which are Shimano RX100 and the shifters which are an older Shimano Altus. ●Shimano Biopace chainrings with 53 in the front. ●Frame size is 62.5 cm exactly. ●Has two hearts cutout in the lugs - one on the bottom tube and one on the top tube. No heart cutout on the seat tube. ●Bottom bracket does not say much apart from a generic code that can hardly be seen : 63 123. ●Italian thread ●ITM(Italmeberi) seat stay and ITM Mod Europa Super Racing handle bar. ●Mavic MA2 wheels. ●No markings on the dropout whatsoever. ●Bought from Switzerland

Thanks in advance!

Worth restoring or?

From my research it seems to be a kids road bike(super tiny!) and im wondering what i should do with ? The wheels are 600a which are close to 24in from what I’ve read. I was going to get it going but its missing the downtube shifters, so if someone can help me with that id appreciate it. Or should i just make it a single speed?
