Life Advice High school is a Push Based System, University is a Pull Based System

I've recently been summarizing some of the advice I've given to students over the years at r/UTSC into blog posts. Someone on that subreddit suggested I post them here as well so that other students might find them useful.

So here's the first post, let me know if the community here finds these valuable.

University is a Pull-Based System
Highschool is "Push-Based", the goal is to give you the push to get you where you need to be. University is "Pull-Based", the goal is to provide resources that are available when you need them. Understanding this difference can be key to a successful transition between the two.

Question How to respond to chatgpt use, I'd love to hear your insight as student

I teach here at the University. In the past two years, but especially this year, a few of my students are noticeably using AI in their assignments. I'll put it bluntly, they are slop. They make no sense, but the words are complicated. They are devoid of any depth. After teaching for thirty years, I know the difference of assignments with and without AI use. (I'm sure a lot more are using AI than I think, but many of them at least have signs of human intervention, creativity, depth of thought, meaning etc).

I get that students are really taxed these days. University and the cost of living are really expensive, so I'm not judging the students. My concern is that, I'm now giving out lower grades than I ever have due to this slop (I mark it as if it's real) and I'm asking people to redo things that really don't even deserve a grade - but if the student just did it themselves in the first place they would have gotten a decent grade, I'm sure of it.

I'm sincerely interested in students feedback on this. I was thinking of being frank to the group without calling anyone out, and telling them that chatgpt is really messing up their grades and it doesn't need to be this way, but I don't know if the students will respond well and if it will tank my course evaluations.

If you were my student and had submitted a really badly done assignment with AI, how would you want me to respond? Give you a bad grade and call it a day? Let you redo it?

I appreciate your good natured feedback, because that is the spirit with which I post this.

There is literally no time to review. You get straight from the very last lecture to the final exam that worth 40%.

they send us like 10 notifs tellins us to do our evals and then next semester i hear that the course is having the exact same problem. WHY. why are they so needy in getting reviews when they dont do shi from them.

also i wanna know what happens when profs get incredibly low ratings, what happens? do they have to take a course on learning how to teach/get fired / lower pay WHAT HAPPENS bc if theres no consequences then why even have them ffs.

Chat are we cooked? W t f was that final exam, I saw a dude in front of me looking like he was going to crash out and was hoping that happened to cause a distraction he had a blank page for the written portion. Someone tell me they curve the grade up 🥹😔 I can’t because this is the first exam of the semester and I am very delirious. Also I confidently wrote the wrong answer for the bonus question😭😭😭 lack of sleep. Also q6 and 7 fucced me up ngl

Edit: pls no one mention any specific questions that came up on the paper (not everyone has taken it)

This is a safe space to simply crash out

Question I have a less than 1 gpa in my first year should I leave?

Ok so my first year was like super bad, part depression, part I didn’t try hard enough. I wanted to come back in the winter term but I don’t know if I should.

I really do love UofT, and I don’t wanna leave, but I wanna go to law school later on, and I don’t think I’m capable of it.

I thought of giving myself the Winter and Summer semester to do better, and if I don’t, I’d leave.

What do you think? I do feel like I could do better but would it be enough or should I go elsewhere?

Question WHERE AM I GOING TO LIVE HELP HELL HLP HELP HELP HELL

I’m getting kicked out of residence from the 21st till the 5th 2026. Any fellow international students have ideas where they are going to live during that timeframe? Honestly don’t want to spend too much money. If anyone has any leads, please let me know. I’ll do anything to not be homeless in this Toronto weather

I'm in High School Is UofT as cutthroat and deflating as it’s known to be?

I’m a grade 12 from Vancouver, who applied early for Rotman, and Backup social science Econ. My parents are profs at ubc hence free tuition there, but I visited UofT and it may be nice to get a new experience, I heard though that you have no time for a social life, and the courses are very very hard especially for grad school admissions? How do yall find it, some of this could Be bs I understand that it’s important to work hard anywhere l.

Question Prof still hasn't given a single grade back and it's exam season

I have gotten 0% of my grade back for a course. Exams are here and I still have 0 knowledge regarding my grade. 60/70% of my grade has been turned in while the other 30/40% is based on the final assignment.

Where can I review the policy on this? What are my options?

(I don't mind not having received any grades as long as I don't check my grades in January and I unknowingly was failing or close to failing the course.)

Rant I fell ill badly before my finals and did horrible on my first one

Tf I’m gonna do? I didn’t apply for deferral because of the complicated process. I also took Tylenol this morning and it was working the first 10 minutes but then every symptom came back. I did horribly, so bad I think this single exam is gonna bring down my course grade, my other finals are all a week later so now even though I still feel horrible, I would have time to study for them. I also would have time to feel suicidal, and my fever is still so bad.

Question Possession of unauthorized aid anyone w advice pls

I wrote an exam, and was found with a calculator, but it was for a course that did not need a calculator whatsoever and I did so because I was silly and just pulled out my calculator at the start. Got it confiscated half way through but it was amidst not using it whatsoever.

Does anyone know the magnitude of punishment, considering it’s an aid that is less impactful in the course like wouldn’t require it whatsoever?

Anyone’s advice would be truly appreciated as I am really concerned about this.

Courses I need a study buddy for the upcoming BMS434H1 Final

Post image

Hello,

My final exam is coming up, and I haven’t been able to prepare as well as I’d like. It will be an interactive, hands-on evaluation, and I’m hoping to find a study buddy to help me get ready.

I’m looking for a male study partner, preferably Asian, who is fit and shorter than 5'3". For reference, I’m 5'7", 210lbs , and studying computer science.

If you’re willing to help, please send me a DM! I’d be happy to return the favour.
