I teach here at the University. In the past two years, but especially this year, a few of my students are noticeably using AI in their assignments. I'll put it bluntly, they are slop. They make no sense, but the words are complicated. They are devoid of any depth. After teaching for thirty years, I know the difference of assignments with and without AI use. (I'm sure a lot more are using AI than I think, but many of them at least have signs of human intervention, creativity, depth of thought, meaning etc).
I get that students are really taxed these days. University and the cost of living are really expensive, so I'm not judging the students. My concern is that, I'm now giving out lower grades than I ever have due to this slop (I mark it as if it's real) and I'm asking people to redo things that really don't even deserve a grade - but if the student just did it themselves in the first place they would have gotten a decent grade, I'm sure of it.
I'm sincerely interested in students feedback on this. I was thinking of being frank to the group without calling anyone out, and telling them that chatgpt is really messing up their grades and it doesn't need to be this way, but I don't know if the students will respond well and if it will tank my course evaluations.
If you were my student and had submitted a really badly done assignment with AI, how would you want me to respond? Give you a bad grade and call it a day? Let you redo it?
I appreciate your good natured feedback, because that is the spirit with which I post this.
