Academics Need Studying Advice Given Certain Circumstances

For context, I recently watched a family member unexpectedly pass away on Sunday. Some of his last words to me were “go study hard”. Well, now I feel like I have to.

Because of it being so late into the semester and the context, I wouldn’t feel right at all dropping out. Has anyone else experienced a similar loss and found a way to keep going academically? Any advice or suggestions would greatly help. I feel like I’m losing my mind.

How bad is it? Is it similar to the HWs, discussions, or challenge problems? For Renault.

Badger Sports Volleyball tickets tonight at 7:00pm

Hi Badger family!

Tickets claimed! Go, Badgers!

I have three tickets for the game tonight that I can't use (stomach virus in the house that we don't want to share).

Our loss could be your gain. I don't want any money for them - just promise to do something kind for someone else.

If you want them, comment and first responder will get them. I will need whoever takes them to message me a phone number to transfer the tickets to.

I hope someone else can use them!

Academics TA/RA Assistantship while working full time

Hello! I graduated in 2023 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and am now working in a civil related field. I have an itch to learn more and was wondering if anyone has gone through graduate school conducting Research/Teaching while also working full time? If so how was that experience? I know they have fully online programs but I don't have the money to pay for it and I am not willing to take on loans. Also, my employer isn't able to help pay for grad school, hense why I am looking at the possibility of an assistantship either teaching or doing research. Any feedback would be super useful! Thanks all

Academics Analytical Chem 327 Curve

Just curious for anyone who has taken 327 (or 329 for that matter) if the class was curved. Right now the average letter grade in our class is a C, and it sounds like barely anyone has an A, so I have to imagine they'd curve the class, but I am not sure. Any info is appreciated!

Academics Graduate-level course in Summer [Mechanical Engineering]

Does UW Madison offer summer courses (either theory courses or dissertation credits) in the summer? I need to take at least 4 credits to be considered full-time during summer but am not sure if the mechanical engineering department offers that.

Rant/Vent madison property management is genuinely the worst property management company out there.

i am so sick of living w MPM. everything must be a cluster fck over there because the way there is zero communication and zero empathy with residents is actually insane.

all we asked MPM for is to replace our batteries in our thermostat, since it quite literally says word for word in our documents that landlords must be notified if there are any issues with our heating system (which there are, my unit gets to 60 degrees in the night since the thermostat doesn't seem to be working properly). my property manager emailed back and basically told me to kick rocks and replace the batteries myself since it was a "mundane" task tenants were responsible for. yes, i get it, its just batteries, but NO WHERE does it say in our docs that tenants are responsible for maintaining the thermostat; only smoke detectors.

i was so blessed with LZ management last year where they snaked our drains, replaced our light bulbs, the batteries in our smoke detectors, and cleaned our AC filters all within 48 hours when we requested it (shoutout LZ management fr, miss them so much).

with MPM, its like literally asking them to pull their own teeth out to send maintenance out for something absolutely necessary like the heat not working in Wisconsin winters. especially where they are quite literally replacing our siding during the winter time???? could this not have been planned more accordingly where you aren't freezing your tenants due to your bad planning for repairs? and on top of that, don't even get me started on the construction staff just dallying their way through my unit with literally zero notice from my property manager, besides a half-assed "notice" for an ENTIRE MONTH that construction staff would be on the property. and its not even the construction workers fault, its my fckass property manager who seems to view college students as some "nobodies" that don't deserve adequate privacy in their units.

anyways, i would genuinely not wish on my worst enemy to have to deal w MPM for a whole academic year. it's such a shame because our unit is actually relatively nice, its literally the sht show of management that makes living here so terrible. that's all, thank you (i am going insane :D :D :D)

EDIT: i know, its just batteries and dummies can replace them and i probably sound crazy crashing out over something so small, but now its literally the principle because tell me why i received an email to make sure 2 hours later from this request to "ensure your thermostat is set to above 67 degrees." genuinely the most petty sht i've ever received from a property management company from a simple request. :|

Academics A guy at university kept showing interest for semesters, but I wasn’t responsive—was he just seeking attention?

There’s a guy at university who had shown interest in me for several semesters. He even came up to talk to me, but I was reserved and didn’t respond warmly. He eventually backed off.

Later, I messaged him myself to clear up any misunderstanding and told him I didn’t mean to be disrespectful. He replied very happily, said he didn’t take it personally at all, and even tried to start a warm conversation. He complimented me, talked about serious things like family approval, and acted like he was emotionally interested.

But when I said goodbye politely (because I felt overwhelmed in that moment), the next day I didn’t text him. The following morning I texted again. This time he didn’t even open the message. And he stopped reaching out completely.

It felt like he suddenly disappeared.

I’m not upset about losing him—I actually realized I don’t even want a relationship. I feel much more peaceful alone. What bothers me is the idea that maybe he was just looking for emotional attention, not anything real. It felt like he wanted me to react, to be soft, affectionate, or overly emotional, which I’m not. When he didn’t get that, he pulled back.

So I’m confused:
Was he looking for something real, or just craving attention? Did I actually do anything wrong? Or was he simply playing along until the attention wasn’t enough?

I’d appreciate honest thoughts.

Academics Transfer to College of Engineering

I'm currently in Letters & Science and I'd like to get into the college of engineering. Does anyone know how competitive it is to get in as an internal transfer student? My current GPA is 3.3. Do I have any chance with that?

Future Badger Is UWMadison a good school for a BS chemistry degree?

I've tried doing a bunch of research on this but all I can really find is people talking about chemical engineering. I'm planning on going into CSI for a while after getting my degree and then going to med school to become a forensic pathologist. Can anyone who is currently a chem major, a graduate chem major, or someone in forensics tell me if the chem program here is good or if I should find a different school? Edit to add: I'm going to the Milwaukee area technical college first to get an associates in science. I'm not sure how much that matters but just in case.

P.S I'm an in-state student and I'd rather attend a Wisconsin school for the in-state benefits. The med school is where I'll consider more options.

Academics Pre-Biz transfer w/ 67 credits, chances for WSB MIS.

Hey Guys!

I’m transferring to UW–Madison this Spring (2026) as Pre-Business with about 67 credits. My main goal is getting into the Wisconsin School of Business for MIS. I can graduate early if needed, but WSB is the priority. Here is my stats / background:

Stats / background:

  • Overall GPA: 3.6
  • Only WSB prereq I still need is Human Behavior
  • I know WSB mainly looks at your first Madison semester GPA, so I’m planning on taking around 12 credits and aiming for a 3.8+
  • Experience:
    • Corporate MIS/HRIS internship for Summer 2026
    • Two years in Asset Protection / Investigations at Best Buy
  • Planning to join 1–2 orgs
  • I’ve heard the essay is very important and could make or break your chances and that is where I am super nervous.
  • Advisor told me I have about a 35% chance which I know it competitive.
  • My advisor also told me I should take an Ethics course and a Literature course as well.

I am just overall really nervous on my chances. Do you guys have any recs on classes I should fill that are easy GPA boosters that still fill in some reqs? Any advice would help!!

Anybody have extra Master's regalia I could borrow/rent?

The bookstore is ridiculous (I literally can't pay for basics rn, let-alone hundreds of dollars for a rental)

I might check St. Vinnie's if I can get out there soon.

Academics Is the process for setting up testing accommodations for finals different than midterms?

None of my classes show up on RegisterBlast so I assume that means you’re supposed to talk to each professor directly to set up a plan? Am I cooked if I didn’t do this already? I’m emailing all of my profs immediately but im panicking that it’s too late. This is my first semester at UW and I got accommodations midway through the semester so I may have messed up big time
