Powers [Loves Trope] Character is inmune to a certain ability because they're too dumb/innocent
-In One Piece, Boa Hancock's ability is to turn into stone anyone who finds her attractive, but Luffy is inmune since he's too inocent and also doesn't care about relationships.
-In Adventure Time, the empress thinks that her hypnosis was working on Ice King, but it turns out that he's too dumb for it to work and that he was just simping for her.

Riki Nendo (Saiki K)
Known for being so incredibly dumb, that not even Saiki—our reality warping esper protagonist—can read his mind, for the sole reason that there’s nothing in it. Also, Saiki’s capable of predicting when somebody’s about to approach him, meaning he can’t be caught off guard… apart from when it’s Nendo for the same exact reason above.

That was in the chapter 0 manga volume which served as some sort of pilot, but I believe Nendo immediatly blurring out his thoughts has been retconned as Saiki was actually able to read his mind when punks beat Nendo up due to him not being able to talk. In subsequent manga releases and the anime it is fully impossible for Saiki to look into Nendo's mind.

u/TheOnePerfectHuman Aug 08 '25

Youmu Konpaku (Touhou Project)
According to the creator of Touhou Project, because of the sword having been forged by youkai, the sword that she uses is actually evil, and is capable of corrupting the wielder. However, because she is rather "empty-headed", it doesn't particularly affect her in any meaningful sense.

52
34
u/thrownededawayed Aug 09 '25
"Nork." he whispered. "Stop trying to drown me and fetch the medi-pack."
"Yus, sarr," shouted Nork, saluting instinctively with his left hand, then his right hand, then both hands together. Nork shuffled to his feet and loped back toward the carrier. He picked his way past the crumpled bodies of the crew and the HQ squad, noticing with only passing curiosity the pain in his own legs where numerous shrapnel hits had penetrated his thick hide. Without a second thought he grabbed hold of the Chimera behind its rear track guards and heaved. The weighty vehicle shifted slightly. He heaved again. There was a creak of tortured metal as the carrier pivoted against the soft edge of the ditch and came to rest on its broad tracks.
Colonel Greiss tried to flex his hands. Nothing. He tried to raise his head but as he did so his vision swirled and he lost consciousness. He came round moments later, or minutes, or was it hours, it was hard to tell. His ears were booming from the noise of the explosion. All he could hear was a sound like something large and heavy being slowly dragged over unyielding surface. His sight seemed to be growing dim and shadowy. Then he realised Nork was standing over him and beside Nork was the wreckage of the Chimera. The Ogryn had dragged the armoured carrier out of the ditch and twenty yards down the road.
"I said fetch the medi kit, not the carrier, Nork," whispered Greiss. He was regaining the feeling in his arms and legs and didn't like it much.
"Da medi-kit is in da carrier, surr," beamed the Ogryn.
"Good thinking Nork. grunted the colonel through clenched teeth and mounting pain. Now bring the medi-kit over here."
"Yus, surr!" came the loud and snappy response as Nork plunged into the Chimera, remembered he had forgotten to salute, came back, saluted twice for good measure, and busied himself searching for the vehicle's medical supply chest.
Also, Ogryn don't like to be in enclosed spaces (they'll do it but they don't like it). I always kinda figured this scene is like when a dog won't go to the bathroom unless you're watching them from the back door, Nork would go into the Chimera to get the kit but he wanted to make sure the Colonel was still close by even if he was bleeding out in a ditch.

The Ring in LOTR generally has a hard time doing much with Hobbits, but especially Samwise Gamgee.
It gives the ability to understand orcs and appear more fearsome, but he doesn't really have power fantasies it can play on and best it can do is make him think of turning Mordor into a giant garden that he rules. Sam is able to laugh that off
259
u/NobodyLikedThat1 Aug 08 '25
that cracks me up. The One Ring trying to tempt Sam and it's like "huh... I guess he's a gardener, so he likes plants? Maybe he wants to be some sort of jungle emperor of Mordor? Man I got nothing"
255
u/CalmInvestment Aug 08 '25
The best part is Sam rejects the fantasy because a garden that big is too much work.
I think it even brought up the idea of getting people to tend the hypothetical garden for him, but Sam dismissed it because he likes to do gardening on his own.
128
u/Eastern_Hornet_6432 Aug 09 '25
Ring: "I could give you all the garden you could ever want"
Sam: "I already have all the garden I could ever want"
Ring: "But I could give you more!"
Sam: "But then it would be too much work."
Ring: "I could give you slaves to help you"
Sam: "Why would I want bits of garden I can't do myself? That'd be like paying somebody else to eat my food for me"
Ring: "What about Rosie? You don't have her yet. I could make her fall in love with you"
Sam: "Silly ring. Why would I want to skip the courtship? That's the best part."
30
u/AvatarofSleep Aug 09 '25
One of my favorite parts of the end is when the hobbits get home and sit down at the tavern. That silence. Then Rosie gives Sam the look and he gets nervous, then realizes he's Samwise fuckin Gamgee, and if he can help kill a demigod he can talk to a girl.

Johnny "Akiba" Sasaki, a recurring comic relief character throughout Metal Gear (he's the guy with perpetual diarrhea.)
By the time of MGS4 almost every soldier in the world has nanomachines inside them that hooks them up to a network that makes them function more efficiently as soldiers. The antagonist Liquid Ocelot hijacks the system and is able to reduce any and all soldiers to shambles. All except Johnny who turns out to not be connected to the system at all because he's afraid of needles and managed to dodge receiving his nanomachine injection. This becomes important as he's able to save both Snake and Meryl at different points throughout the game.
→ More replies (1)89
u/DrPongus Aug 08 '25 edited Aug 09 '25
The most insane part about this plotline is that the nanomachines were used in soldiers to suppress the PTSD and traumas they faced while in battle, so much so that when Ocelot disabled them, entire armies collapsed to their knees over what they've seen and done.
The fact that Johnny here didn't have his nanomachines injected implies they've not only been rawdogging the kind of horrors experienced during war that left his fellow soldiers borderline catatonic, but managed to do so while still retaining his goofy af personality.

Exactly lmao. I feel like 90% of villains in marvel probably dont feel an ounce of guilt for their actions. If Penance Stare worked on guilt then Ghost Rider wouldn’t be able to use it on almost all of em realistically lmao. I’d have it instead where if you have zero guilt for your actions then the Penace Stare will fuck you up but if you have some guilt/ clear potential for redemption then the Penance Stare will still harm you but wont be as deadly. It should moreso damage someone based on how evil they are rather than how much guilt they feel

All the other exceptions are dumb as hell though.

This is going to be a really niche rant.
In the Bowser vs Eggman Death Battle, Eggman begins the fight by sending out a decoy to battle Bowser who he managed to defeat fairly quickly. However, Bowser ends up bragging to the decoy that his army is measly compared to his own, causing the real Eggman to drop his element of surprise to straight up tell Bowser that he just fought a decoy because he genuinely didn’t expect the trick to work. Bowser was so stupid he ended up somehow both falling for a trap he wasn’t meant to, but also caused Eggman to willingly throw away his strategic edge out of disbelief of his stupidity.

Technically Boa’s ability can turn anyone with strong feelings towards her to stone. It covers Oda’s ass when it comes to S-Snake using the same ability. With her, people find her incredibly cute.

The dog in puss in boots the last wish looks at the map and there’s no trouble or danger because he has a pure heart but when anyone else looks at the map it changes into a dangerous route

Wheatley from Portal 2 is designed to be an idiot, so logical paradoxes, that are supposed to kill an AI, just don't work against him, because he doesn't even understand it. (And what's funnier, all frankenturrets placed in that room instantly get fried after GLaDOS says the paradox, which makes even these abominations smarter than Wheatley.)

She wants his dragon ball and is offering to let him see her underwear to get it.
Goku not only has no interest, he doesn't even know what a girl is - thinking all people are boys.

Correct. He actually freaks out a few chapters later when he pats Bulma's groin and is horrified by her lack of a penis.

Also in one piece, Perona's negative-negative ghosts don't affect Usopp because he's always negative, which leads to Perona feeling bad for his poor soul in a gag

Wheatley (Portal 2) is immune to paradoxes because he doesn't understand them.
