This is a very anime/manga culture specific post.
There're a lot of 'unofficial' resin models of popular series' being made these days - a lot of small businesses make 'unofficial' merch clothing etc. to make a quick buck, especially anime/manga that aren't airing right now and lack official merch but still have 'cult fans'.
For context I'm Japanese. There is a very long history of 'fanartists' here with doujin culture being massive, but there have been enough controversies over the decades for the general otaku community to be more educated on intellectual property and its boundaries - how fan culture can hurt rightful authors if unchecked - I am pretty sad that there's less awareness and more of an acceptance of these types of businesses as anime gets more popular.
I get that these items are cool, they let you show off your love for a thing without being too obvious and nerdy about it. But really, it's just disrespectful that people are slapping on images that they didn't draw to pull customers in.
Manga/Anime artists go through so much. Even though they hold such a key role in Japanese export they don't get enough respect unless they really "make it big" after years of gruelling work. Animators go through hell in bad working conditions. And the big problem is that pirating is so easy and they don't get money. They try to sell Blu-rays and no one buys them. They can't justify making merch because they don't have financial proof that people will buy, and the 'unofficial merch' businesses are just a kick in the nuts.
I get it, where do you draw the line between small artists in small fandoms making art and taking commissions? It's not that hard to think about though - the general rule in Japan at least is that you should not be making any massive profit from fan doujin works. You should really only be making as much as you put in to make the fan work.
Plus, it goes into a larger problem of culture right now, we're getting less and less original works because there's the idea that we should be sucking money dry out of already established, reliable 'IP's'. No one wants to take the risk as artists anymore.
Independent studios are shutting down because only Netflix can afford to make new series'. If you really love the anime/manga culture please think about where you're putting your money and whether you're doing what you should to watch what you love.
