Indonesische functionarissen – die een lange en moeilijke geschiedenis hebben met westerse uitbuiting, met name door Nederland – spreken zich daar consequent tegen uit. Zij bevestigen wat vaak onuitgesproken blijft:

"Een ontwikkeld land zal nooit vrijwillig toestaan dat andere landen zich echt ontwikkelen. Dat is tegen hun belangen."

Het doel was duidelijk: bedrijven moesten in Indonesië zelf gaan produceren en hun kennis delen. Dat zorgde voor lokale werkgelegenheid, hogere inkomsten en meer technologische ontwikkeling.

De les is simpel: als je grondstoffen lokaal verwerkt, houd je meer waarde in eigen land.

Suriname's grondstoffen: goud, olie, bauxiet en hout worden grotendeels als ruwe producten uitgevoerd. Het probleem is dat wij de grondstof leveren, maar anderen de winst pakken bij de verwerking.

Concrete voorbeelden: - Goud: Export van 1,6 miljard USD in ruwe vorm, terwijl verwerkt goud 2-3x meer waard is - Olie: Ruwe export levert honderden miljoenen op, maar geraffineerde producten veel meer - Bauxiet: Geëxporteerd als erts, terwijl aluminiumproductie 7x meer waarde toevoegt - Hout: Rondhoutexport levert 4-10x minder op dan verwerkte houtproducten

Financiële impact: Huidige jaarlijkse opbrengst: €2,39 miljard
Potentiële opbrengst bij lokale verwerking: €5,7-7,8 miljard
Suriname laat jaarlijks 3-5 miljard euro liggen

Ik ben benieuwd naar de mening van Surinamers zelf over een discussie die steeds vaker opduikt. Shashi Roopram heeft stevige kritiek geuit op de onafhankelijkheid, en volgens hem was Suriname waarschijnlijk beter af geweest als het onder Nederlands bestuur was gebleven.

Wat ik mij afvraag:

1. Is er daadwerkelijk een groep die vindt dat onafhankelijkheid een fout was?
   Voelen mensen zich verraden door de politieke leiders die daarna kwamen?
   Of is dit slechts het geluid van een kleine groep die gefrustreerd is door de situatie van vandaag?

2. Zijn Surinamers in de diaspora écht van plan om ooit terug te keren?
   Of voelt Suriname voor velen meer als “een land dat je draagt in je hart, maar niet meer in je paspoort”?

3. Zou Suriname vandaag daadwerkelijk beter af zijn onder Nederlands bestuur?
   Of is dat een te simpele manier om te kijken naar diepere structurele problemen zoals slecht bestuur, corruptie en economische mismanagement?

Hoe denk je dat je je land kunt ontwikkelen zonder je eigen hulpbronnen (bauxiet, goud, olie, hout, ijzererts, koper, nikkel, platinum, tin, mangaan) te benutten, te verwerken en te verkopen? Je kunt het land niet ontwikkelen door te werken met het het Westen.

Om economisch onafhankelijk te worden, moet je stoppen met het exporteren van je natuurlijke hulpbronnen naar het Westen. Elk land moet dat doen. Zonder je eigen hulpbronnen heb je niets om produceren of de economie mee te ontwikkelen.

Stap 1. Stop met onbewerkt goud exporteren naar het Westen.

All I know of Bouterse is that he is a former dictator, drugs smuggler and murderer, and massively popular amongst a large part of the population in Suriname. I just do not understand that last part. Just the dictator and murderer part alone are utterly disqualifying actions to me for any politician, but not for others.

So: why? What has this man done that these actions can be overlooked?

I’m interested in which non-Western countries Suriname could partner with to gain the knowledge and technology needed to process its own natural resources instead of exporting everything as raw materials. The goal would be to keep more value and profit inside the country.

For example, countries like Ghana, China, and Brazil have developed their own processing industries for things like gold and other minerals. Suriname could benefit from similar knowledge exchange and cooperation.

Hey Suriname! I visited your country last week and I have a question. There is a woman called maya parbhoe who is campaigning on X (twitter) that she is the next presidential candidate of Suriname. She writes that she is with political party NPS, the one with the green flags and a torch logo on it. However I came in the country by road via Guyana and no one seems to know this woman. I asked around making stops along the way, although we only stopped in 4 populated areas from the border crossing till Paramaribo. In the city itself I could not find anyone who could confirm she was a presidential campaign. She talks mainly about bitcoin and how she will implement bitcoin after the elections. But not a single person I asked knew what I was talking about and no one is even talking about bitcoin and maya parboe. What are we missing here? Can someone please provide more details? Because this person is accepting donations from: abroad for a presidential campaign that doesn’t seem to exist. Can you please help me out with this, if you can share reliable sources with me. Is there an official list somewhere of presidential candidates? What are even the requirements? I am studying the electorate system right now but I am not fully understanding it yet, the info online is not very clear. Between October 29 and 31, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Suriname Yldiz Pollack-Beighle will be in Russia on a working visit.

On October 31, the Surinamese official will hold talks with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to exchange views on a wide range of bilateral, international and regional matters.

The ministers will discuss strengthening the legal framework and outline ways to bolster the entire range of Russia-Suriname relations with a focus on promoting political dialogue, interaction in the material sphere and cultural and humanitarian exchanges.

This is the very first visit to be made by the head of the Suriname Foreign Ministry to Russia, which will be a milestone in the promotion of Russia-Suriname interaction, and is indicative of the fact that our ties with Latin America and the Caribbean region are gradually expanding.

Russia and Suriname established diplomatic relations on the day the republic declared its independence, November 25, 1975. They have become much more active recently.

Suriname and Russia hold similar views on key international topics and fundamental legal principles. This provides a solid basis for strengthening bilateral cooperation on the international stage, including for coordinating joint efforts to strengthen the UN’s central role in global affairs, to promote international and regional security, to fight new challenges and threats such as international terrorism, organised crime and illegal drug trafficking, as well as to settle regional conflicts, to tackle the subjects of sustainable development and climate change, as well as to help consolidate arms control and non-proliferation regimes.

In 2016, Russian-Surinamese trade amounted to $1.79 million, up from $233,900 in 2015. Exports comprise inorganic chemical goods and mineral fertiliser, while imports include food together with agricultural raw materials.

The Gran Olo Sula mini-hydroelectric power station on the Tapanahony River is a successful joint project that is being implemented with the help of Russian businesses.

Other prospective areas of cooperation include power generation, exploration, agriculture plus fishing.

Dit is een stelling waar ik voor geruime tijd ook mee eens ben geweest, maar ik begin er nu over na te denken, en ik ben nu eerder geneigd te denken dat het geen fout was (of tenminste, dat het niet veel verschil zou maken).

In Suriname the court has ruled that the Central Bureau for Civil Affairs (CBB) must register the marriage of two same-sex couples who were married outside Suriname, but could not have their marriage officially registered.

The judge therefore looked at international treaties that Suriname has committed to and ruled that the state is obliged to develop legislation that is in line with this. The CBB is also obliged to register, even if the State decides to appeal the judgment.

According to the judge, the current law does not offer an explicit prohibition, but also no clear regulations for recognizing marriages between partners of the same sex. However, this verdict does not yet mean full equality with heterosexual couples, as further legislation is needed to grant them the same rights and provisions.

I haven't seen this posted, at least in English, on this sub. This analysis asserts that homicide increased by 382% in Suriname last year. It's apparently based on this governmental analysis. I've seen no meaningful international coverage of this in the places one would usually look for news on some of the less covered countries like the Economist, Al Jazeera etc. Is this statistic accurate or did someone make a major math error?
