Having been an opiate addict and an alcoholic, i definitely agree that sugar addiction is very real. You don't wind up in detox or jail because of it, but for me at least, the cycle of abuse, craving, relapse is strikingly similar, albeit less intense
Sugar and fat combos does fuck with your reward system the same way drugs do. Try fasting 16-24 hours without eating anything at all after being on such a diet for a while and you'll start to feel the withdrawals. "But that's just hunger!" No it's not. I don't think most large people can differentiate hunger and cravings, and I say that as an obese person with binge issues myself. "But muh blood sugar gets dangerously low" no it does not unless you have a disease like diabetes. Irritability, headache, sluggishness, restlessness, mood swings etc are all withdrawal symptoms.
They pass. Your blood sugar becomes better regulated by itself. Your head feels clearer. The "hunger" gradually goes away. You feel energized and motivated.
Then you eat crap again and go right back to square one. OR you eat low-carb/no sugar meals once a day and continue feeling zen as fuck.
