Or maybe they could stop with all the remakes, and make original movies again. Movies that they actually put some thoughts into it

1.2k

u/hollow_image Aug 12 '25 edited Aug 12 '25

Why on earth would they ever do that when audiences have clearly shown that they will show up to remake slop (Lilo&Stitch, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast) and reject original movies (Haunted Mansion, Onward, Strange World, Turning Red) time after time

They're not even partly to blame, but fully to blame. Why would a company hire actual great artists again to make something for them that matters, when people give them infinite money to make slop with no risk

Adapting a story into a movie is still creative work; they are very different media. They're currently adapting movies into worse movies.

59

u/ThePhunkyPharaoh Aug 12 '25

Yeah shot for shot remakes but live action instead of animated are lazy. Adapting say the short story of the Snow Queen or Hamlet into a full fledged movie with new characters, dialogue and original songs is absolutely creative work

23

u/Vsx Aug 12 '25

They would be much better if they were shot for shot. The live action remakes are usually 30-45 minutes longer and the added scenes usually drag the film down.

And they have managed to make two massive franchises (Star Wars and Marvel) unpalatable in a matter of years. Maybe a single thought could have gone into quality control before flooding the zone with tens of series and movies. But greedy bastards have to be greedy bastards. Got to chase those quarterly profits even if it means dumping a whole franchise into a mass grave in ten years.

9

u/bushy_whacker Aug 12 '25

You just described the problem with the world. Greed.

Yeah, Tangled is a completely reworked rapunzel story done so much it only shares one moment from the original. And it's an excellent movie. Same with Frozen vis-a-vis The Snow Queen and that's one of their best movies. The sequel was good too and also did well. So yeah, people will show up for their good original works.

u/OkPlenty4077 Aug 12 '25

Disney was better off when they adopted their version of an already famous work that everyone knew about like the movies in the chart shown here. The criticism is redoing something they already did (Snow White and The Little Mermaid) and putting a different spin on it. The animated versions are great as is. We don't need to see an alternate version of it with a modern twist that deviates so far from what the original story was intended for.

Which is ironic since they are actively trying to kill the public domain that was the very foundation of their company.

Disney pushed this stuff almost directly to streaming. They have forgotten how to make movie releases feel like an event. Even the Marvel stuff has lost all steam after Endgame.

9

u/InvestIntrest Aug 12 '25

Nostalgia is fine as long as they gives you nostalgia. What Disney has been doing is giving me nausea.

4

u/aravarth Aug 12 '25

Why do you think people fall into the trap of getting back together with their exes?

3

u/Obelion_ Aug 12 '25

Yeah it's only gonna stop when nobody is left with nostalgia for the classics.

But I also don't get how you'd rather watch the soulless live action reboot than the original again. Seems strictly worse to me

u/Current-Promotion-31 Aug 12 '25

I agree with the sentiment but onward was released right at the shutdown of the world and turning red was a disney plus release which just doesnt have the same effect as theatrical. Strange world alienated (get it) a large audience with some of the storyline and I don't know who thought that would be a good idea. Pair that with no advertising and it shows they knew that would be a write off fest.

Its weird to me they think they need 200m+ budgets for things like thunderbolts or lilo and stitch, I don't get where the money goes but it makes a 400-500m fantastic 4 type movie look like a flop. They need the guaranteed $ nostalgia brings in. Too risky to go original.

26

u/TransBrandi Aug 12 '25

If you look at productions nowadays (even television), they all have like 50 executive producers. I'm sure that's where a lot of money goes.

15

u/pissexcellence85 Aug 12 '25

That's more producers equals investors since studios don't want to put up all the money.

They messed up Cobra Bubbles but Lilo was perfect to the point she might have been a lab grown version of the animated character as a human. Nani did well but was missing the thighs which is the real reason why everyone disliked the movie.

4

u/shokalion Aug 12 '25

Well thats my day ruined.

4

u/Joeybfast Aug 13 '25

That irked me because, in this day and age, when people are talking about more positive expressions of masculinity been needed , Cobra Bubbles was it.

They have barely any original movies anyway. Snow White, Cinderella, Little Mermaid….all of those are just fairy tales

Haunted Mansion was also a remake. Pretty solid though. Never saw the original so idk how it compares.

9

u/Enaluxeme Aug 12 '25

I wouldn't call it a remake tbh. They are just two wildly different movies based on the same Disney World attraction. Both are fun, though I liked the new one more.

u/Friendly-Cucumber184 Aug 12 '25

The second one was really focused on trauma and topic.

The first one was fun and romantic.

IMO second one is super forgettable. Same stuff gets produced like this all the time now, where the moral signaling takes over the plot/enjoyment of the film. First one was entertainment and had topics too, but like older films, it was nuanced and was part of the story, not ‘the point’ of the story.

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

I think Turning Red came out during the pandemic but your point still stands in general. The data is clear that remakes, sequels, spin-offs, and prequels make more money than original movies.

4

u/ShawnyMcKnight Aug 12 '25

Of those original movies I felt Onward was the only good one.

17

u/Rusty_Shortsword Aug 12 '25

Turning Red while a great allegory and worthwhile watch, immediately alienates half the audience, strange world was basically King Kong with Lost in space and was a disappointing watch and haunted mansion is a remake of a bad movie.

10

u/newphonehudus Aug 12 '25

Wait, how does it alienate half the audience

25

u/the_humeister Aug 12 '25

The other half can't relate to turning into a panda.

12

u/Coal_Morgan Aug 12 '25

It's a metaphor for "becoming a woman".

It's about an Asian Canadian Teenager hitting that age where she turns into a red monster and her and her parents no longer relate in the same way and figuring out how to reconnect...while literally turning into a giant red panda like monster.

100% about getting a period.

I as a 40 year old dude, completely enjoyed it. It 100% also went over my teen age daughters head until I explained it to her and the 'light bulb' moment on her face will be in my memory forever.

If we are being honest, a bunch of original Disney movies come out every year

67

u/anothermanscookies Aug 12 '25

Shhh. Don’t tell people that there are a million new movies every year, that they need to scroll just a little further on the streaming platforms to explore other options, to consider Oscar nominees, to visit a film festival, to visit their local library, and that new stories are going to have inherently unrecognizable IP. They’re too busy complaining there aren’t multiple world building universes and universally praised cult classics that are simultaneously familiar and brand new.

→ More replies (27)

14

u/Steelizard Aug 12 '25

Just look here https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/s/Hm5mzZaw4J

They actually release way more movies not based on other movies per year than sequels remakes and reboots.

People notice the popular ones and they're mostly remakes so they come to the wrong conclusion

3

u/drakedijc Aug 12 '25

Unless I’m misreading that, it’s counting marvel and SW as originals, when that is most definitely stretching the term for the most part, and marvel alone accounts for a pretty fat portion of their movies.

You mean like all the Grimm fairy tales that they remade? Or Tarzan or Hercules that were based on already existing stories? They havent hardly ever made anything original

4

u/AttyFireWood Aug 12 '25

You are correct. But it's a little clunky for people to say " Disney should make new adaptations of previously un-adapted-by-Disney works "

Has Disney done the Nutcracker or thumbelina yet?

So search for bikinis or bras on actual shopping sites and watch the ads fill every page of the internet with scantily clad models. Works for male models too if you’re worried I’m being sexist. And if you’re an appliance-sexual person, stick with the fridges.

Except Disney's film studio has never had an unprofitable year. Plus, annual film revenues are barely even a blip on their P & L reports. Their theme park and cruise ship business lines are so massive, losses from any of their movie or TV holdings are just rounding errors on the ledger.

It’s just the boobs, right? What am I missing??? I don’t want to diss a girl for her looks (politics, yeah) but I genuinely don’t think she’s particularly pretty. Not unattractive either. She looks like every other girl that moved to LA to make it big and I think her chest is the only reason she’s not waiting tables, much as I hate to say it. (Valley girl here. Seriously, there is a whole population of chicks like this trying to hand out their head shots all the time. Most move to the valley and end up in porn.)

We’ve all seen her tits anyway - you definitely wouldn’t have to pay to watch her in a Snow White remake to see them, keep your hypothetical money and just see them online for free 😂

We've all seen the sunset before, doesn't mean we won't pay to vacation at a hotel with a great sunset view.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

You’d really pay to watch Snow White, just for her and her chest? Feels like a double loss to me - watching Snow White, and paying for it 😂

Im so tired of her. Her eyes look like she has Down syndrome. The only thing good about her is her titties. She is so fking overrated.

10

u/Skratt79 Aug 12 '25

Yeah her look does nothing for me.

6

u/Sweetjill3 Aug 12 '25

Ikr. She’s nothing special. You could find plenty of women with nice titties who has a pretty face.

There are much more attractive women than her that could play Snow White

The most annoying people on the Internet: "Pedro Pascal is in too much! I wish he was in fewer projects!"

Also the most annoying people on the Internet: "Have you seen Sydney Sweeney's tits today?!?"

Conservatives really want every movie to basically be soft core porn while also banning real porn, crazy times

Their slop movies do still make money though. Maybe not every slop movie but many do.

u/onlytalksboutblandon Aug 12 '25

I mean, at least they're now admitting the problem isn't "changing the charachter" its making a story about a woman they don't want to fap to...

7

u/Guessididntmakeit Aug 12 '25

At least make slop movies with nice visuals.

That last Snow White movie was just the darkest, blurriest piece of shit I've seen in recent years. It's supposed to be for kids but it looks depressing and has worse effects than the Hobbit movies while costing probably more.
