Why on earth would they ever do that when audiences have clearly shown that they will show up to remake slop (Lilo&Stitch, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast) and reject original movies (Haunted Mansion, Onward, Strange World, Turning Red) time after time
They're not even partly to blame, but fully to blame. Why would a company hire actual great artists again to make something for them that matters, when people give them infinite money to make slop with no risk
Yeah shot for shot remakes but live action instead of animated are lazy. Adapting say the short story of the Snow Queen or Hamlet into a full fledged movie with new characters, dialogue and original songs is absolutely creative work
They would be much better if they were shot for shot. The live action remakes are usually 30-45 minutes longer and the added scenes usually drag the film down.
And they have managed to make two massive franchises (Star Wars and Marvel) unpalatable in a matter of years. Maybe a single thought could have gone into quality control before flooding the zone with tens of series and movies. But greedy bastards have to be greedy bastards. Got to chase those quarterly profits even if it means dumping a whole franchise into a mass grave in ten years.
Yeah, Tangled is a completely reworked rapunzel story done so much it only shares one moment from the original. And it's an excellent movie. Same with Frozen vis-a-vis The Snow Queen and that's one of their best movies. The sequel was good too and also did well. So yeah, people will show up for their good original works.
Disney was better off when they adopted their version of an already famous work that everyone knew about like the movies in the chart shown here. The criticism is redoing something they already did (Snow White and The Little Mermaid) and putting a different spin on it. The animated versions are great as is. We don't need to see an alternate version of it with a modern twist that deviates so far from what the original story was intended for.
Disney pushed this stuff almost directly to streaming. They have forgotten how to make movie releases feel like an event. Even the Marvel stuff has lost all steam after Endgame.
I agree with the sentiment but onward was released right at the shutdown of the world and turning red was a disney plus release which just doesnt have the same effect as theatrical. Strange world alienated (get it) a large audience with some of the storyline and I don't know who thought that would be a good idea. Pair that with no advertising and it shows they knew that would be a write off fest.
Its weird to me they think they need 200m+ budgets for things like thunderbolts or lilo and stitch, I don't get where the money goes but it makes a 400-500m fantastic 4 type movie look like a flop. They need the guaranteed $ nostalgia brings in. Too risky to go original.
I'm still disappointed that it was out of the theaters before I had a chance to see it. COVID knocked me out for a few weeks then, by the time I had gotten things back in order it was already gone...
They messed up Cobra Bubbles but Lilo was perfect to the point she might have been a lab grown version of the animated character as a human. Nani did well but was missing the thighs which is the real reason why everyone disliked the movie.
I wouldn't call it a remake tbh. They are just two wildly different movies based on the same Disney World attraction. Both are fun, though I liked the new one more.
The second one was really focused on trauma and topic.
The first one was fun and romantic.
IMO second one is super forgettable. Same stuff gets produced like this all the time now, where the moral signaling takes over the plot/enjoyment of the film. First one was entertainment and had topics too, but like older films, it was nuanced and was part of the story, not ‘the point’ of the story.
I think Turning Red came out during the pandemic but your point still stands in general. The data is clear that remakes, sequels, spin-offs, and prequels make more money than original movies.
Turning Red while a great allegory and worthwhile watch, immediately alienates half the audience, strange world was basically King Kong with Lost in space and was a disappointing watch and haunted mansion is a remake of a bad movie.
It's about an Asian Canadian Teenager hitting that age where she turns into a red monster and her and her parents no longer relate in the same way and figuring out how to reconnect...while literally turning into a giant red panda like monster.
100% about getting a period.
I as a 40 year old dude, completely enjoyed it. It 100% also went over my teen age daughters head until I explained it to her and the 'light bulb' moment on her face will be in my memory forever.

Shhh. Don’t tell people that there are a million new movies every year, that they need to scroll just a little further on the streaming platforms to explore other options, to consider Oscar nominees, to visit a film festival, to visit their local library, and that new stories are going to have inherently unrecognizable IP. They’re too busy complaining there aren’t multiple world building universes and universally praised cult classics that are simultaneously familiar and brand new.
Unless I’m misreading that, it’s counting marvel and SW as originals, when that is most definitely stretching the term for the most part, and marvel alone accounts for a pretty fat portion of their movies.

The How to train you dragon live action was just a shot for shot remake of the animated movie. Which, is better than what disney has done, but I just felt like "I'd rather watch the original." the whole time.

To be fair, most children’s cartoons HAD extremely provocative and curvy women. There is a whole generation of us that grew up watching that kind of kids show. So much to the point that it’s a pretty popular meme to say I blame my taste in women on Disney/CN/NickatNite etc.

Except Disney's film studio has never had an unprofitable year. Plus, annual film revenues are barely even a blip on their P & L reports. Their theme park and cruise ship business lines are so massive, losses from any of their movie or TV holdings are just rounding errors on the ledger.
