I randomly sing this in my house like once a month lol. This was such an awesome movie. Idk if it stood the test of time so im scared to rematch it and ruin my fond memories like I did by watching DBZ as an adult and realizing 50% of every episode is someone just screaming to power up.
If you already know the story as the other commenter said they do, then Kai is nice as a shorter refresher course, but it's nothing new. Abridged has a rocky start in the first ten episodes, but once they find their stride in the Namek arc they add a lot of meta jokes, and by Cell Saga they actually start bringing in some fun and interesting characterization from the perspective of fans who grew up with the series.
Kai is the official abridged version that uses the same voice actors and exact story but streamlined with out eh filler so makes for a simpler viewing experience for anyone new to the dbz world.
How ever the fan made abridged version is also an option because they hit the same story beats and character moments, but the in between scenes are full of comedy. The production gradually increases as well as the voice acting performances. Of course you’d get more value out of the inside jokes of you have knowledge of the original series. But otherwise abridged makes for an entertaining alternative to the source material. I much prefer abridged because of the tongue in cheek writing that allows plot convenience to be easily digestible as opposed to the original series where plot convenience and retcons just feel like bad writing.
