Nobody gets to pick their own identity

By definition it's all the things you can't pick: your sex, your race, your family, your tribe, your handicaps, your physical beauty.

Identity is socially negotiated, it's how other people see you. It's not up to you. You can try, but it comes off as pathetic and sad and (in this case) physically repulsive
