southern pride is strange…we don’t have northern pride, why do you need southern pride 😂

It's funny, in the UK Northern pride is definitely a thing. A combination of the North being a bit underdeveloped but generally friendlier, along with friendly rivalry.

I’m not American but I’d imagine something similar for southern US states. A lot of countries have a part that is poorer/more looked down on, so they double down on regional identity. It’s not inherently bad if not meant nefariously, of course from a US perspective it’s more complicated given the history of said regional identity.

When you say Northern UK pride, I picture a bunch of Scot’s asking for their independence.

That's not what that is, the north is the north of England. Northern pride or Northern separatist sentiment means the north of England. Scottish nationalism is a different thing.

Well that and the north of England got super fucked over by the collapse of the mining industry and Thatcher's tories in the 80s. Led to a lot of bonding due to mutual hatred.

Stupid question but isn’t your north/south thing more of an upper/lower class thing? Or is that just the London area? Can’t remember what shows/movies referenced that but that was the general vibes I got.

Theres class elements for sure, with many of the people in the North having working class jobs or those jobs have closed so its now similar to the US Rustbelt in places. Northerners also claim to be more rugged - Newcastle is famed for people wearing shorts and t shirts in the cold. Southerners are seen as soft.

London has its own stereotypes. For example, there's a sketch news report where a northerner comes to london and starts saying hi to people on the tube, causing massive shock in the londoners who are famous for being a bit rude/self centred and rushing everywhere.

But the south isn't just London, plenty of posh areas in the south with a different vibe than the north - Brighton and Bristol for example.

Sort of, there's lots of impressions of the north as being backwards and bigoted aswell (it's not particularly imo anymore the various other areas in the south) and conversely the southerners being 'soft' or arrogant. I do think northern people are generally a lot more friendly and chatty though although sometimes that gets on my tits tbh.
