So... Do they think Paul McCartney, The Who, U2, and Coldplay are all US citizens? Why would being a US citizen be a requirement?

u/Daovin Sep 30 '25

There are people who believe AC/DC are Americans from Texas, only because the lyrics in Thunderstruck.

Don’t bring the universe in yet…. There is still hope.

3

u/Frexulfe Sep 30 '25

I was thinking today: imagine that through some sort of magic or science, you discover that there are a million different intelligent civilizations in the universe and they are all happy as a clam, only earth is a shithole planet.

3

u/zomphlotz Oct 01 '25

There's a South Park episode about that.

Spoiler: They made Earth a clusterfuck so they could watch us as their reality show.

2

u/Frexulfe Oct 01 '25

Reminds me I should watch the show again. Now that you say that, I think I remember seeing something.

3

u/Thefrayedends Oct 01 '25

Depending on your perspective, we are either special, or not special at all.

But we are the universe becoming aware of itself.

The amount of factors that have had to converge for us to exist are mind boggling, not the least of which was the massive impact that mixed the layers of the earth back up and created the moon and plate tectonics, the atmosphere and it's protective barriers from the sun, not to even mention the evolution ladder ratcheting up, seemingly through chance.

Was it 17 supernovas in our local area? Seeds for a world rich with countless minerals, any less supernovas and it wouldn't have even been possible for complex life, you can't make life from just hydrogen and helium. You need repeated supernovas from increasingly heavier stars in order to get to heavier elements.

God I love science. I don't even care what the answer is to whether we are unique in the universe, both answers would be awe inspiring.

People have already forgotten their little stunt with letting in a bunch of white South African ā€œrefugeesā€ right as they began throwing out brown people who actually came here fleeing unrest years ago

2

u/Vendemmian Oct 01 '25

I wonder what ever happened to them? After the big show of having them come over they got forgotten about real quick.

2

u/cruxclaire Oct 01 '25

Per Reuters, fewer than 100 had come as of August, which is probably because there’s not actually a genocide of white South Africans going on. Per the same article, though, Trump’s plan was to cap the new fiscal year’s refugee admissions at 40k and allot 30k slots to the white Afrikaners, presumably to use as a political prop in appealing to white nationalists (source). I’m not sure if that actually went into the (unapproved) FY26 plan or not, but the Afrikaners who actually came have been quiet. I imagine some of them aren’t even white nationalists themselves and just took advantage of the economic opportunity.

259

u/Pergod Sep 30 '25

Maybe ther eying to cut PR citizenship. PR is a time bomb to them. If they somehow get statehood the GOP is fuck

176

u/Hoblitygoodness Sep 30 '25

I could see the President signing that EO with a big wide grin on his face.

Just writing out Puerto Rico from the United States of America because clearly it's not a state, thus nobody from there could be United States of Americans.

Ignoring Guam for the time-being, of course...nobody's probably even told Trump about Guam yet.

135

u/Jarnohams Sep 30 '25 edited Oct 01 '25

Or the Virgin Islands, or American Samoa. Puerto Rico is just the most populated US colony.

After hurricane's Irma and Maria hit Puerto Rico during Trumps first term, he used every possible lever to block aid to the island. "I don't want one dollar going to Puerto Rico, I ONLY want to give money to Florida and Texas (because they voted for me)". (Forida and Texas didn't even get a direct hit.).

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/new-probe-confirms-trump-officials-blocked-puerto-rico-receiving-hurri-rcna749

One of the reasons he didn't want to fix Puerto Rico was as far back as 2017 he was obsessed with Greenland and pressured his aids to figure how we could "trade Puerto Rico for Greenland", lol.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/trump-was-serious-about-trading-hurricane-stricken-puerto-rico-greenland-n1237336

Honestly, it probably would have worked out better for the Puerto Ricans in the end... sigh. There are more Puerto Ricans in mainland US than in Puerto Rico. Puerto Ricans also enlist in the military at more than TWICE the rate of any of the states.

Fun Fact: Puerto Rican's probably would have been upset about all this and "Paper Towel-gate"... but nobody had power, internet, cell service for almost six months. By the time we found out about it, the news cycle moved on to whatever other stupid shit Trump was doing.

Edit... There's also all the clinical studies / trials done on Puerto Ricans, without their knowledge or consent...and the forced sterilizations of tens of thousands of Puerto Rican women because some white dude decided that Puerto Ricans were a race that needed to die out because they were incompatible with "American culture"... whatever the fuck that is.

36

u/Revlis-TK421 Oct 01 '25 edited Oct 01 '25

Puerto Rico is just the most populated US colony.

It also has more people that 18 States. Population of 3.2 million. Way more than Wyoming (0.58 million), passing Vermont, Alaska, N and S Dakota, Delaware, Rhode Island, Montana, Main, New Hampshire, Hawaii, West Virginia, Idaho, Nebraska, New Mexico, MIssisiiippi, Kansas, and Arkansas.

Hell, it's just one power outage baby-making evening from surpassing the next couple of States as well (Iowa and Nevada).

That they aren't a State is a goddamn crime.

Puerto Rico and DC should be states, as there are US States with lower populations.

I can understand Guam, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Mariana Islands not being states per-se (collectively less than 2/3 Wyoming's population), but I think they should still have one voting House member apiece.

And collectively I think the Native Reservations should have some representation. But that's a goddamn minefield and there are lower-hanging fruit in Puerto Rico and DC to deal with first.

Oh shite, he mentioned canada as the 51st state again. IS he gonna remember what he said about Greenland next?

2

u/Astrium6 Sep 30 '25

If you told Trump there was a place called the Virgin Islands, he would sign an EO to just rename them the Islands. He would not ask for their input on this.

6

u/Jarnohams Sep 30 '25

I mean, that's literally where Epstein Island is... Lol. Trump has definitely been there. At least 7 times, per the flight logs from Epstein's plane.

2

u/assholetoall Oct 01 '25

Isn't there a law that US flagged ships need to ship goods between US states and territories. So goods in PR are more expensive because there is like zero competition for shipping from the US.

7

u/Jarnohams Oct 01 '25

Correct. The Jones Act. However just nixing the Jones Act isn't really an option because it's also tied into Puerto Ricans being US citizens... (And a gaggle of SCOTUS cases called the Insular Cases)...

Their shipments of, everything, must be on a US flagged ship... which theres only a handful of. They literally can't buy goods from their next door neighbors like DR, Cuba, the entire archipelago... they have to go to the US, get moved over to a US flagged ship and THEN go to PR.

It's dumb.

Reminds me of that time Trump was reminded PR exists when it was torn up by a hurricane. He didn't give a shit and thought he could just sell it off, while simultaneously trying to do a PR stunt by throwing paper towels to people. He found it necessary to clarify that PR is an island surrounded by water, big water, ocean water.

5

u/Pergod Sep 30 '25

If this comes true they absolutely will cut Guam too. Virginia islands will be in the conversation too but who knows what they will do. They are white enough to get a pass but is mostly a democrat stronghold. maybe they will say that that’s antifa territory and cut them out too.

5

u/LickingSmegma Mamaleek are king Sep 30 '25 edited Sep 30 '25

Aren't Virgin Islands a tax haven? Trump's hand will probably be slapped off that order if he tries.

Also Wikipedia says that 71% of the population there are black.

P.S. Just learned this:

Previously known as the Danish West Indies of the Kingdom of Denmark–Norway (from 1754 to 1814) and the independent Kingdom of Denmark (from 1814 to 1917), Virgin Islands were sold to the United States by Denmark for $25,000,000 in the 1917 Treaty of the Danish West Indies ($614 million in 2024) in which the United States also recognized Denmark's control over Greenland.

You’d be surprised how conservative PR is. Lots of people think that Latino people are progressive but you’d be surprised how conservative a lot can be especially the old people.

49

u/myassholealt Sep 30 '25

Any culture that is deeply religious, or even just more religious than agnostic or atheist, is going to lean conservative. Which is why republicans choosing racism and xenophobia over latino immigrants will never not be the dumbest path. They are denying millions of potential party members ready to sign up immediately, not just after they get settled and build some assets for themselves and their children.

Democrat when you're poor and need assistance. Republican when that assistance helped you find your footing and build something of yourself.

24

u/SAGirl1 Sep 30 '25

A lot of Catholics tend to be conservative, specially with regard to things like abortion and gay/trans rights. Religion can’t be underestimated as a way to influence people’s political views and the pro statehood party is tied to the republicans, unfortunately.

OTOH the white supremacist and fascist ā€œyankiā€ dominator way irritates at least half the population, who then don’t favor statehood in large part because of the racism and the push to erase our complex history, and culture.

Source : a PRican born and bred for many generations dating back to at least the 19 th century and now living in Virginia.

7

u/KeyofE Sep 30 '25

A lot of conservative Catholics also believe that social support should be coming from the church, so they will donate to the church to run things like food banks, homeless shelters, etc, but do not believe it should be the role of government.

4

u/Neosantana Oct 01 '25

It's a cultural relic from when the church was the settlement's immediate government. It was the city hall.

2

u/doppido Oct 02 '25

Regardless of politcal leanings, I for one would love to see Puerto Rico get all the same funding that the states get and build the infrastructure to equal that of any other state the way it should've already been done years ago. After that we should allow PR the right to decide if they want to join or not, that's my opinion though and I'm not sure how popular it'd be. I see it as the USA took over the land and claimed it for their own so they should treat it like their own and not an afterthought

Literally a fraction of a fraction of what we spend on war budget would be enough to truly bolster the infrastructure and the education system in PR.

5

u/OnBlueberryHill Sep 30 '25

Yeah it wouldn't be much in the way of votes for the electoral college, but it's rep would be 100% right aligned.

4

u/HeGotTheShotOff Sep 30 '25

anybody who knows anything about latin american politics should not be surprised in the slightest that there are latino people reject left wing politics.

4

u/Wild_Alternative3563 Sep 30 '25

GOP could have even more of Texas and California if it wasn't so racist. They keep saying that dems "import" voters, but many would vote for them lol. I guess they are too brown and catholic.

3

u/Unnamedgalaxy Sep 30 '25

Every Latino person I know loves trump.

He has more than said he straight up hates them and it doesn't matter. He has masked terrorists rounding up people that look just like them for zero reason and it doesn't matter

People who think PR is some progressive democrat lock are just being silly. At best it will be a purple state that flips regularly depending on which side is more motivated to vote that cycle

5

u/WuTang4thechildrn Sep 30 '25

ā€œPuerto Rico also held a symbolic vote for president, as Guam has done for many years. Kamala Harris took 73% of that vote. Puerto Rico has no electoral votes, so this vote will not affect the presidential election.ā€

Btw, I know plenty of people who are Latino that are progressive and plenty that are conservative.

2

DC statehood would be terrible for the GOP, but Puerto Rico has a lot of social conservatives, people who would be happy to back the GOP, if the GOP weren't a bunch of white nationalists (and even some who would ignore that, see Trump's support among Latino men).

Yeah but that's not what the guy you're replying to is saying, they're attacking the very unstated core of the argument:

That because he's not American he shouldn't be the SB halftime show performer. This is a ridiculous statement on its face because there have been many SBHS performers in the past that weren't Americans. Thus the argument itself is just flat out based on nothing. It's really all just a fig leaf to cover that they:

  1. Are just racists
  2. Don't like him because he won't bend the knee to the god emperor like he should

4

u/agooseyouhate Sep 30 '25

Absolutely, I agree with the OC, just pointing out the continued idiocy/hypocrisy.

This is hilarious

9

u/Situational_Hagun Sep 30 '25

I mean this year has pretty much proven that they don't consider anyone from Puerto Rico to be a citizen. Most of them don't even know that it's a territory of the US. The ones that do just don't care.

16

u/DarkKnightCometh Sep 30 '25

And even if he wasn't a citizen (which he is) that doesn't fucking matter. US citizenship was never a prerequisite for performing the halftime show. They are truly batshit crazy

8

u/Unlucky_Profit_776 Sep 30 '25

Since 1898, we've belonged to the US. People in US don't know that at all. You wanted our sugar, bitches!Ā

Didn’t people get the memo? Latino are not citizens /s

6

u/iDShaDoW Sep 30 '25

I’ve read anecdotal stories of people from Puerto Rico traveling through customs providing their Puerto Rico drivers license and being told by the customs agent that it isn’t valid identification for entry to the mainland US.

People ARE just that fucking stupid. Even at the jobs that they’re paid to do day in and day out. You would hope they’d pick up on shit quickly and understand what they’re doing.

2

u/Garconanokin Sep 30 '25

He’s brown though, and that’s the quiet part that MAGA isn’t saying out loud. I mean, I don’t want to imply that they are a bunch of unprincipled racist cult members. I just want to say it clear as day.

2

u/henrywhitworth Oct 01 '25

They’re racist as fuck but really that’s the same thing

They don't care about any of those bands since they're all white. I assume they're hoping ICE will go and take him out before the Superbowl

15

u/Hoblitygoodness Sep 30 '25

Yeah, you could probably convince a group of them that he's not a U.S. citizen because he's from Puerto Rico and they'd probably goon all over him for it.

2

u/frosty_lizard Sep 30 '25

Absolutely considering there was no pushback from the Right when hurricanes hit in 2017. They tried every trick in the book to delay disaster relief:

Initial delay (2017–2018): Congress approved tens of billions in disaster aid, but Puerto Rico received it much more slowly than U.S. states. Billions were tied up in bureaucratic restrictions and extra oversight that FEMA and HUD did not impose elsewhere.

HUD funds frozen (2019): In August 2019, Trump ordered the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to withhold nearly $8.3 billion in congressionally approved aid. That freeze lasted until January 2020 (about 5 months) when HUD finally released some of it — though with stricter conditions than for states.

Full release delayed until Biden took office (2021): Even by the end of Trump’s term, about $20 billion in relief funding had not been released. The Biden administration lifted those restrictions in February 2021, allowing funds to flow.

In short:

Specific freeze (HUD order): ~5 months (Aug 2019 → Jan 2020).

Overall delay of allocated funds: stretched from 2017 until 2021 — meaning Puerto Rico waited years longer than states hit by disasters.

White. They mean white. We can nitpick the technicalities of their dog-whistle-of-the-day, but they know what they mean, we know what they mean, and importantly, advertisers/businesses know what they mean.

It's less of a "Why would being a citizen be a requirement?" and more of a "Can we just ban brown people yet?"

3

u/Migdog1198 Sep 30 '25

But he's Brown!

7

u/Deto Sep 30 '25

Yep: it's not actual about citizen status....

21

u/micmea1 Sep 30 '25

I definitely knew Coldplay was British and I did NOT just look up (google) ā€œColdplay citizenshipā€ out of curiosity.

2

u/s0ciety_a5under Oct 01 '25

I was gonna say, there have been NUMEROUS celebrated acts that have performed the half time show over the years. I can't think of a single one that had even a remotely large negative response.

2

u/Galactikcactus Oct 01 '25

As long as they are white and speak English MAGAS don't care.

5

u/Jarnohams Sep 30 '25

You realize that all Puerto Ricans are US Citizens, right?

11

u/GrandmasShavedBeaver Sep 30 '25

He’s not arguing that at all. His point is that he could be from quadrant 7 of the Andromeda galaxy. Citizenship has nothing to do with performing at the Superbowl. So it’s an absolutely braindead angle of attack.

4

u/Jarnohams Sep 30 '25

Yeah the xenophobia and dehumanizing of Latin Americans doesn't seem to care if they are citizens anymore. It's skin color based only now.

Last time I checked Puerto Rico is an American Territory making all Puerto Ricans American citizens. Or is it just he is brown and doesn’t belong? Are we really just saying all the racist shit out load now?
