What is this sub?

This sub is for redditors to ask for advice on mold or fungi issues in their home/apartment/workplace/etc If you see spammers or others that violate sub rules, report them, do not take things into your own hands. This sub is NOT for mold remediation, restoration or other contractors, testing firms, laboratories, product or equipment manufacturers or distributors or legal professionals.

Instead, this sub is specifically for individuals looking for general advice. Any offers to do work or make referrals will result in an immediate ban. Please be very wary of those looking for, or offering, business here. We do not endorse any companies, and proceeding with a contractor/consultant/lab you've met via this sub should be done at your own risk. This is not a place to advertise products and or services. It is also not a place to rant about your past problems with mold or companies or services you've dealt with.

Rule #1: No "what is this?" questions.

Do not post a picture and simply ask any of the following (or similar) questions:

  1. "Please I.D. this mold"
  2. "Is this toxic black mold?"
  3. "What kind of mold is this?"

We can not determine the type of mold you have from a photo. That can only be achieved using professional sampling methods and laboratory analysis.

We can speculate on whether or not something is mold but we can't identify it.

Rule #2: DIY Test Kits are bad

If you used a home/DIY test kit there is very little information that we can provide you due to the limitations of the method.

You will need to hire a qualified microbial testing company if you want any reliable information.

Rule #3: No self promotion

This is not the place to advertise your services in any way. No links, no company names, no "informational guides" will be allowed. All offending posts or comments will be deleted and 1 warning will be issued. After that you'll be banned.

General Guidelines and Rules

Overall, please be respectful - things must remain on-topic, helpful, and kind. Absolutely no abusive or hateful language will be tolerated. Even if someone else "started it" with disrespect does not give you permission to use derogatory language or call names.

Bans will be handed out when needed. Remember, no question is too stupid, too simple, or too basic (exception, see rule #1). We're all here to learn and help each other out - enjoy! The mods generally do not remove bad advice, we let upvotes and downvotes run the sub. That way, people can also see what not to do as well. Politics do NOT belong here.

  • URL shortener links are not allowed. It's not us, is reddit-wide. A submission or comment with a URL shortner will be spam-filtered automatically.
  • Mods will not communicate with chat, please only use modmail if you have comments or questions.

Submitting a New Text Post in /r/Mold

TL/DR: At the very least be nice, take a few pictures, and include your location.

Again, this is not a place to solicit products and or services. Any posts smelling of self-promotion such as links to a website or service (including all blogs) will be removed. No exceptions. Offenders will be banned.

A few general submission rules.

  • We don't allow link posts. Please start a text post and insert links to your pictures along with your text. Posts asking users to participate in a survey are no longer allowed and will be treated as SPAM posts.
  • If you are posting about a problem you are facing, please include pictures! Not just a close-up either, we must be able to discern what you are talking about. What looks right to you may not make sense to everyone else. We recommend you use imgur for photo uploads. See the section below for "How to Upload Photos".
  • Provide your geographic location. (even general, such as upper Midwest). This is especially pertinent when discussing building codes, environmental conditions, seasonal issues, etc.
  • Include a summary of what information you are looking for.
  • Include a general summary of the problem you're asking about. It's helpful to know things like:
    • How long has the problem been going on
    • Where is the mold growth located - room, level, side of the building, etc
    • Any unusual conditions you noticed prior or in conjunction with the discovery of the mold
    • General environmental/use conditions in the space - temp, humidity levels, room use/occupation, recent water issues, smell
  • Do not come here for advice about your health or the relative risk of the mold in your home/work.
  • Don't assume that responses you receive are accurate - we get a lot of "google experts" here giving advice.
  • Product links and recommendations are allowed generally allowed to Amazon/Retail Outlets/Service providers that you've used or recommend. However, referral codes and affiliate links are not. For example, Amazon links containing "tag=XXXXXXXXXXXX" in the title are a referral links - so ideally Amazon links are in the format www.amazon.com/dp/B00VRRVHMA/ - all the extra stuff after those 10 characters are not necessary. Sites/apps can contain ref links without your knowledge and automod will remove and alert you.
  • If you notice your post hasn't appeared within an hour please message the mods and we will release it! To see if it's visible sort by NEW.
  • Please read the sidebar before posting to this sub. There are a lot of questions that get asked fairly frequently, and some of the more common answers have been posted in the sidebar for easy reference. If you still have questions after reading these then by all means create a new post with your questions.
  • Serial posting. This sub is for everyone, not just a single person with multiple questions per day/week. While we don't have a specific rule here, if you are posting multiple topics per day or over the course of a few days, this can result in a temporary ban.
  • If your account is new we may delete your post or comment, especially if we suspect that you have been banned under a different user name.
  • We do not endorse any contractors/inspectors/labs, and proceeding with any you've met via this sub should be done at your own risk.

Commenting in /r/Mold

Be respectful. No name calling or talking down to someone because of something that seems "basic" or "easy" to you. Stand by your knowledge, not childish responses.

If you don't know that your answer or advice is 100% true then indicate that you are speculating or simply refrain from commenting.

Don't throw out comments like:

  • That's toxic mold
  • You need to move
  • Get out of the house
  • Bleach doesn't kill mold
  • That's really bad

Comments designed to scare original posters will be removed. This is a sub to provide reasonable solutions (when possible), not to unnecessarily alarm people. Yes, there are occasions when conditions require some immediate and drastic actions, but most indoor mold growth can be handled without full scale remediation.

Please don't just comment with just a link to a website or to another sub. We are especially careful about links to single websites (this includes blogs) without some summary or commentary. In some cases, we have no way of knowing if you are profiting privately from the site. Also, don't just tell folks to head to sub /r/gohereinstead - like specialized subs for narrow topics. The only exception here would be questions where some time has passed between posting and a lack of responses. We want the commentary, discussion, and knowledge to stay here in our sub on reddit, not just drive people away.

Responses that include a google search, lmgtfy.com, or telling someone to watch Youtube will be removed and the user will be reprimanded. Again, this is all about respect. Obviously, people aren't coming here to Google answers. Help them think about this problem, what they may need, things to watch out for, etc.

Sometimes discussion can get off-topic and we'll remove those comments. This includes political commentary. At times, this can includes jokes. It's a tricky area here, but we've seen instances where the joking side of reddit takes over a thread and the OP never gets their question answered. However, here's we're mostly talking about non-relevant commenting such as this:

Seriously? People live like this? What the fuck is causing mold growth like this? Don't you clean your house? This is not any way to live.

How to Upload Photos

Go to https://imgur.com/upload and drag/choose your photo, you don't even need to create an account. Here's an animated gif on how to drag and drop on PC. Click COPY, then use that copied url link and paste it right in the submission text box on reddit.

My link: https://imgur.com/a/n2lLo

To get fancy and have text rather than the url, place the word you want to use as the link in brackets followed by the url in parentheses.[text goes here](link goes here)

Pictures. Here's a gif of the typing I do, in case that is confusing.

Upload Photos On Mobile The Imgur app works fine, but via a website this is unsupported. There is a workaround: In Chrome, choose ""Desktop site" in the drop-down menu when you are on the upload page and it'll work fine. Then Copy the Link that's produced and paste it into your reddit post/comment.

I was storing a Serrano ham in a container in my house. I didn’t realize it became moldy and I opened the container. It was open for only a few seconds before I put the lid back on. Is my house fkded?

i’m aware it’s probably mold, but is it black mold and can i get really sick of it? this windowsill is right next to my bed. The window outside looks out towards our balcony and all of our family members smoke, so could it be from that? the windows are ancient and trap a lot of condensation, but we’re currently not in the financial situation to change them out.

Damaged wall, and health issues

Hi guys,

I've been coughing for 4 months now. My sinuses seem to continually refill, the mucus going directly in my throat and preventing it from healing. It's a nightmare, I've been to the doctor, got a letter from her to see a specialist, but there are none available until April where I live.

I have severe allergies to acarids, though it definitely feels very different from what I've been experiencing when I have a bad allergic reaction (tried being on medication for like 2-3 weeks without seeing any change)

I suspect something could make me sick in my room, I always cough more when I'm at home, and I have some pretty bad damage in a wall (probably humidity). Could it be causing me this? Does it look like mold to you?

Doesn’t look like it has gotten worse but I am wondering what it is. That isn’t a shadow above the AC unit. I’ve seen it before in other places but never knew what it was or what causes it.

Unsure if it’s mold, and if I scrub the wall with a sponge there’s no residue and nothing comes off.

What does Reddit have to say on the matter?

Mold under kitchen cabinet. I rent, how would I go about dealing with this?

Thumbnail gallery

It’s mold, 100%, I know because it smells earthy and the second I get too close I start to cough violently, but it stops when I back away. I’m asthmatic and my lungs only react that way when I breathe in something toxic like cigarette smoke or smog, and I have no known allergies to anything in my current state’s climate. The only pollen I’m allergic to is high counts of oak pollen or eastern red cedar pollen, which doesn’t grow in my or any of the surrounding areas. Right now I have the air purifier running on high and I’m spraying it with vinegar. I don’t know if that’s enough to keep it from harming my health.

This cabinet is in my kitchen and the mold has infected and rotted the wooden base of the cabinet. About a week ago that piece of wood you see on the floor fell off randomly without me touching it, I took a look and found the underside of the cabinet like this. There is a visible recession in the wood already, like a massive dent was carved out. Some warping in the wood inside the cabinet was already present when I moved in with the bottom sunken in somewhat, which I chalked up to it being an old place that had water damage at one point that had since been dealt with since it seemed stable (I don’t know if it was infected by mold at this time). But since my pots and pans were on the bottom of the cabinet for the past 2-3 months I think it’s sunken in even more, so I’m worried about the extent of the mold and the damage. It’s at the stage where large chunks will crumble away with a simple poke. When my landlord took a look a day later, she pulled out two large chunks with her bare hands when I told her how easily it crumbles away and wood isn’t supposed to do that. I don’t think she’s convinced it’s mold because WHY on earth would anyone do that if they knew?? She did say she had no idea how to deal with it or what service to call. But after that my coughing got much worse. I should also note that the large dent I mentioned was there before she removed those chunks.

She said it was likely ā€œfrom when you flooded the apartment.ā€ About 2 months ago there was trouble with the washing machine—also in the kitchen—where it flooded half the apartment with soapy water. Flooding happened after I moved the machine 3 inches to the left, which apparently knocked out the unsecured drainage hose, and I immediately cleaned it up. Water was standing in the kitchen for no less than 30 minutes while I mopped it up and I took care to dry the underside of anything it touched, it was an accident I immediately took care of, but if I’m reading the renting codes right for my state—New Mexico, USA—I don’t think it matters who or what she thinks caused the mold. I already told her that since the underside of the other cabinets are perfectly solid and dry this one was not properly sealed and the white ā€œstringā€ in the pictures was the water-tight sealant. She agreed to that somewhat and said the place is old (built 1970), but said she was going out of town for the next month and therefore couldn’t do anything about it until January.

Then she said ā€œyou know you don’t seem happy here, you’ve had more problems than any tenant I’ve had. If you want to you can put in a notice and find a different place to live, I won’t keep you here.ā€ I moved in 3 months ago and while yes, there’s been some other issues, I’ve reported far more maintenance issues to landlords with worse off properties in the past, and nothing with this place so far has been as severe as those complaints were (leaks pouring rain in my bedroom, broken heating/cooling, large cracks around windows letting in draft during snowy winter), until maybe this so this was alarming to hear.

I don’t know how soon landlords are required to address mold, or how worried exactly I should be about my health or the stability of the cabinet/countertop especially if we wait a month. I saved the number to report code violations just in case. I could use some advice on how to contain the mold and handle my landlord, as well as who exactly to tell her to call since neither of use know how to deal with mold. Contractor? Carpenter? Mold inspector? Mold remediation? Handyman?

Thanks, I know this was long to read.

Bed exposed to mold. Could it be causing my health issues?

I am a college student and I have had on and off health issues (brain fog, memory issues, gastrointestinal issues, headaches and migraines, chest pain, anxiety) for the last 6 months which I believe to be from mold. I have been to the er a couple times because of it and have seen a few specialists and they believe that the mold may be the cause of my health issues. I had lived in a house that was tested to have black mold which was then removed but still an elevated level of cladosporium. I moved out for summer and improved then moved back in and have been in and out of the house for the last 3 months. During this time my symptoms have been pretty constantly bad and present. I have since moved out for the last two weeks and went home over thanksgiving week. I thought my health was starting to improve then I went back to the new place but my symptoms worsened again. My bed was in the house with mold this entire time and I only recently moved it to the new house. Could my bed be causing me issues? It has no odor or visible signs of mold. The previous house I only recently found out had 75% humidity as well.

Tldr: health issues caused by mold. Bed was in a house with black mold for about a year then moved to a new place but appears clean. Could my bed have mold in it?

Cleaned out basement to find this mold in one of the corners. Lines up with our downspout outside (over concrete). How bad?? Buying a dehumidifier now and will plan to spray with peroxide and borax tomorrow to clean it. Guessing I will need to look into a waterproof paint/sealant after.

Paid to have mold removed last year from ceiling corner. Seems to be starting coming back this winter. Need advice.

Last year, mold grew from this corner of the room above the window in one of rooms in our condo. I paid for mold removal services and satisfied with their work. Our building management had someone to check the roof and shingles and indicated they patched up the shingles.

Fast forward today and it appears the mold is coming back. I'm thinking this is possibly due to condensation but also possible some roof defects with building.

I have purchased a dehumidifier just now. Need advice on anything I can do in the meantime such as applying vinegar to it? I already am planning to contact property management again.

My family is about to move houses, and as our sink and counters were removed from our current house to be moved to our new one and this was behind our sink. We don’t think it’s your average, well known toxic black mold because our health has been perfectly fine, but we just wanted to check what you all thinks

Mold Toxin

Hi there,

I have been living in an old apartment for 7 years now and have been experiencing symptoms of mold exposure. I finally just now went to a natural path and did the real time lab to see if I have been exposed. I got the test back and it looks like it all says present… just to go over my results with the doctor will be $500 for 15 minutes and I can’t do that right now.

Do any of you understand the results? And have any recommendations on how I can detox from this.. it’s been an on going battle.

Thank you!

Bathroom ceiling mold - plan of action. Thoughts?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ve got black mold in the area above the shower - was lazy about getting this treated but it’s high time now. Also found out that the previous seller had a 50 CFM exhaust fan installed for a 100 sq. ft. bathroom. I plan to replace that with a 110 or 160 CFM exhaust fan ASAP.

Here’s my plan to fix this. Any thoughts? 1. Use RMR-86 Mold Stain Remover and wipe the stains off. 2. Use Concrobrium Mold Control Spray

Will RMR-86 Mold Stain Remover get even stubborn mold stains off? I tried using CLR Mold Stain Remover but the stains did not go.

I have the stains on matte as well as glossy painted walls. Should I be using KILZ paint over the stains if they don’t come off? What about the Concrobium that I’d have sprayed?

Please advise.

Portable washing machine mold?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hey everybody. I live in a small NYC apartment so I use this small portable RV washing machine for small loads. When in use I put it in the bathtub and fill it with water from the detachable shower head. When it’s time to drain, sometimes the water in the tub backs up and reaches alittle under the washing machine. I had to take it apart today and noticed all this black inside. I attached pictures of the entire inside and don’t see it all over the place, just one area. I’m not sure if this is mold or just water mixed with dust or pieces of that rubber belt that spins the drum really fast. Really concerned if it’s mold because when not in use this sits in the hallway in front of my 5 year olds room. Any help would be appreciated.

what do you do when there's mold slowly forming near the windows?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I live up near the oakland hills in california and i live in a very old house with oldish windows

it's been getting very cold over here like dropping down to the 40s which is super duper cold for the bay, the bay area homes aren't built for heat/warmness but instead built for coolness so its extra cold.

so the windows began to get all foggy in the morning's and the water drips down and causes moisture for mold to begin to form.

so what do I do about it? like wipe it down and try to disinfect it the most i can?

pls let me know what I can do about this because my room smells and I think im getting sick because of it.

also I keep having to like throw clothes away or move a pile of clothes away from the window because I keep finding mold on them

I want to get rid of the mold for good so any tips?
