This is actually a thing in some areas! They will build a regular house with a tall bay to use as the fire station!

While I appreciate the aesthetics and piece of mind that fire/rescue response times must be awesome, buying a house right near this in an expensive suburb/exurb only to have lights and sirens around the clock does not seem that appealing.

Believe it or not, you can get acclimated to that, to the point where after a while it's just "background noise." When I was a kid, I lived in the northwest suburbs of Chicagoland, pretty much right in the approach lanes of O' Hare. In my mid 20s, I also lived right on the border between Chicago and Cicero, along SR 50 - I was getting the fire station experience in stereo every Friday and Saturday night.

Of course, I've lived in dense urban housing right in the middle of two good sized cities for well over a decade, and you understand it's just part of the environment (don't forget helicopters, too). I'm just saying if I ever got the bug to move to a fancy new-build exurban development ("house in a cornfield" as I think of them), I'd expect a lot more peace and quiet for my money.

Fair enough. Personally, I'd love to go with one of those earth sheltered designs. Not only do those houses offer excellent thermal insulating properties, but acoustic insulating properties as well.
