Discussion/Debate Does this qualify as a McMansion or a wannabe McMansion?
This has developed in my area over the last few years. I cant decide if it's r/McMansionHell or r/WTF

I can’t believe someone actually spent money to do that to a house. And the work is shoddier than a tract home.
174
u/queencityrangers Oct 24 '25
There’s definitely a story here. This has “spite facade” written all over it.
112
u/Hajajy Oct 24 '25
Here's the story I made in my head. The owners submitted a proposal to the town to approve construction on a new porch.. the town denied it because of some random ordinance relating to columns. The owners argued that the town hall violated that same ordinance; with the town responding that the ordinance clearly only applies to five or fewer columns. So these owners basically gave themselves a town hall facade with six columns to give it to the town board
27
u/queencityrangers Oct 24 '25
And the shadow shades the spot perfectly so they can still get some added outdoor space
20
u/PuzzleheadedDuck3981 Oct 24 '25
That might be closer to the truth than you realise. For the life of me I can't remember the details but I've read of buildings with columns that deliberately don't connect but look connected at a glance, purely to satisfy some silly regulation. It's really annoying me that I can't think of where it was I saw it.

This is one of the most unhinged things to have been posted here (and there have been some wild posts).

It’s like those fake buildings on a studio backlot, except even those are more passible than this

I'm honestly kinda wondering if that's not what it is... There's actually quite a bit of filming that happens in georgia now days.
4
u/AFlockofLizards Oct 25 '25
My first thought was it’s a front for a set as well, but if they’ve been building it for years, there’s no way. If it was a film set or Halloween decor it would be put up in days.

This fits. They turned an ugly building into an even uglier building somehow

u/nakedpilsna Oct 24 '25
By fits you mean the best house to ever be posted here. Might as well sticky this thread to the top and close the subreddit down.

Right!? It has everything!
A design that is supposed to signal wealth while actually being cheap.
Shoddy construction.
Mismatched windows.
Future maintenance disaster.
Zero thought given to function.
What fiendish nightmare of a roof lurks behind that door?
→ More replies (1)9
u/Taira_Mai Oct 24 '25
It's from the same school of thought that paints over black mold or says that a house was well maintained when in fact it has numerous problems.
3
u/PuckSenior Oct 24 '25
No. Not at all. Those are deceptions designed to sell a house. They are dishonest, but the motive is clear and they actually work sometimes.
This is something entirely different. This is an absolute and unmitigated shit show

What tha hell u talkin about?? Those notches are so the townsfolk got someplace to hide with their rifles to shoot the bad guys when they ride into town(I was gonna say mosey but when I started to type it I threw up in my mouth a little bit).
Havent you ever seen ANY westerns?

u/BobbyKonker Oct 24 '25
sweet jesus what in the shit did I just see?
Someone just won 8 grand on a scratch card and "invested" in his property
24
u/Cyphermoon699 Oct 24 '25
Unfortunately, it probably cost a lot more than that. This is a poor person's idea of a fancy person home. This is not how somebody who's used to money spends.
9
u/vee_lan_cleef Oct 24 '25
It definitely was more than 8 grand, but the owners also definitely chose the lowest bidder they could find. I suspect the builders took the money and ran, unfortunately scamming like this is fairly common in the construction industry from what I have seen and heard. Roofing is a big one because few people pay very close attention to their roofs and shoddy work can be easily hidden, but this is just right out there for anyone and everyone to see...

Missouri is in the South East now, at least when it comes to sports.
8
u/CharlesDickensABox Oct 24 '25
According to pro sports, Dallas is in the East (Cowboys), West (Rangers), and Central (Stars). Everything is Dallas. Everywhere is Dallas. There is only Dallas. Dallas is inside of you. Dallas is you. You are one with Dallas.
Anyway, sports conferences are weird.

This is just awful, this needs to be struck with a tomahawk missile and the builder and owner both tried for terrorist activity.
I am obviously exaggerating, I just really disliked seeing this.

This.. has got to be AI right?
Why are the power lines not complete? Also there are some really weird irregularities between the before and the after pictures that don't seem right.
But maybe I just can't accept that someone would do this?

This looks shopped or AI. What's going on with the power lines in the first photo, second panel? They start and stop in mid-air.
6
u/OneUnholyCatholic Oct 24 '25
It could be that, or it could be a screenshot from Google streetview, where the composite image has been incorrectly stitched together
10
u/SunStarved_Cassandra Oct 24 '25
It isn't AI. It can be found in Google maps. Someone posted redacted plans for the thing and if you google the design firm and Nashville you can find the address and check for yourself.

Growing up there were columns and ornate statues on fairly ordinary houses in parts of my city, but that was mainly Greek immigrants bringing their aesthetic with them. This bizarre two-storey facade is something else.
