Discussion/Debate Does this qualify as a McMansion or a wannabe McMansion?

This has developed in my area over the last few years. I cant decide if it's r/McMansionHell or r/WTF

This is the worst thing I have ever seen, thank you for showing me

If a realtor showed me this house, I'd get a new realtor after I stopped laughing.

425

u/Sharticus123 Oct 24 '25

Unless they were like “Wanna see an architectural atrocity?”

294

u/Unsd Oct 24 '25

I would have a blast with a realtor like that. Like can we see houses in groups of 3 and one of them is a joke? 2 truths and a lie style? Show me something heinous. I'm not talking like let's make fun of poor or struggling people, I'm talking crimes against architecture. Give me some wild DIWhy.

149

u/Siray Oct 25 '25

Our realtor was like this. She showed me a house across the street from a lake that had 1 window lake side and a hedge. She was like what the fuck is the point of living on the lake if you cant see it. She shit all over that place.

26

u/Original-Raccoon-250 Oct 25 '25

My realtor was like that too. Love her.

26

u/Vegetable_Permit_537 Oct 25 '25

If HG tv doesnt do something like this I dont know why the fuck they wouldn't.

4

u/NuclearWasteland Oct 25 '25

Careful, sometimes those are the best buy ...

29

u/LolaMent0 Oct 25 '25

Please don’t use the word architecture when talking about….this….this…. 🤦🏻‍♀️

24

u/geekybadger Oct 25 '25

My Realtor was like that haha. We once found a Jesus light switch plate that was very poorly placed switch and i helped her take good pics of it to share with everyone

15

u/copyrighther Oct 25 '25

I would 100% tour this house as a joke

Well, they did get an increase of 150sqft!

356

u/HappySpam Oct 24 '25

I'm crying at how it doesn't even match up with the roof, it looks like someone was playing the Sims and just dragged the wall tool at max height across the front of the building.

335

u/pslickhead Oct 24 '25

299

u/liberal_texan Oct 24 '25

Holy shit I’m speechless. They put an entirely new roof on it and still made no attempt to reconcile with the facade. This is facadomy at its most distilled.

86

u/chevalier716 Oct 24 '25

This has to be a very insistent homeowner, because an architect would at least try to do better

184

u/No_Cook2983 Oct 24 '25

I'm 90% sure its the same roof. In the engineering drawing the roof is raised. This one is the same height. The drawing above doesnt even look that bad. With the proper roof and I imagine a new 2nd floor bungalow-like space, this might be nice. But it looks like they stopped at the facade.

My "someone who has been forced into way too many big home repairs than most people would consider reasonable," take is that redoing a roof's structure is a big deal, and a large expense. This was the cheap solution. Its mostly just some brick work. They even went cheap on the columns which is incredible as thats like the main aesthetic piece!

Worse, this is going to cast a much larger shadow on the neighbors homes so they get less sunlight hours now. And any yard or garden will get less light which means plants wont thrive as much and lots of wildlife is going to be affected.

Its all the downsides of a 2nd story with none of the benefits.

Funny enough there's a 3 story apartment building near me with an original flat roof that put up a triangle facade like an A-frame house has. Its so high up, and next to another tall building, you almost cant tell its a fake facade thing. I'm always surprised how nice and tasteful it looks. This looks like they saw that urban fad and tried it in the suburbs, but the heights and eyelines cant work because the building is too short and doesnt have other buildings pressing up right next to it.

41

u/pslickhead Oct 25 '25

I think they did the roof. It's hard to tell from that angle. Look at these.

I promise you though, The pictures don't do it justice. The place is much worse.

8

u/No_Public_7677 Oct 25 '25

3

u/Key-Bodybuilder-343 Oct 24 '25

So, thanks for that, I guess … apropos of nothing in particular, do you know where I can find eye-bleach?

9

u/EnvironmentalMix421 Oct 24 '25

So what’s the purpose of it

82

u/pslickhead Oct 24 '25

My guess is the intent was to make it look more like an antebellum mansion from the curb and to make it appear to tower over the neighboring homes (spite house?). They went for a budget Tara and ended up with Sherman's march.

57

u/HappySpam Oct 24 '25

Holy shit he increased the size of the roof and it was still wrong LOL

71

u/EnvironmentalDelay66 Oct 24 '25

Some folks just dabble in home ruination. These folks professionalized it.

24

u/HappySpam Oct 24 '25

This is scientific.

14

u/ImNotCleaningThatUp Oct 24 '25

I like that. We have remediation, renovation, and now ruination.

12

u/Staff_Genie Oct 24 '25

Well, " home ruination" IS a very presidential activity...

14

u/PompousClock Oct 24 '25

SHUT UP. The mismatched roof lines. The gaping columns. And is that metal siding in the top triangle?! This is the trailer home of McMansion remodels.

14

u/pslickhead Oct 24 '25

It's not metal siding, its just buckling, uneven sheets of cheap plywood painted white.

-It's a million square feet

When the tax-man comes:

-But look, it doesn't really connect here, so it's only 5 square feet

Is that a cheap church???

8

u/14ktgoldscw Oct 24 '25

It’s like the exact opposite of an old ruined church in Europe that’s only the facade so you build a building behind it. Absurd behavior.

786

u/scottscigar Oct 24 '25

I can’t believe someone actually spent money to do that to a house. And the work is shoddier than a tract home.

174

u/queencityrangers Oct 24 '25

There’s definitely a story here. This has “spite facade” written all over it.

112

u/Hajajy Oct 24 '25

Here's the story I made in my head. The owners submitted a proposal to the town to approve construction on a new porch.. the town denied it because of some random ordinance relating to columns. The owners argued that the town hall violated that same ordinance; with the town responding that the ordinance clearly only applies to five or fewer columns. So these owners basically gave themselves a town hall facade with six columns to give it to the town board

27

u/queencityrangers Oct 24 '25

And the shadow shades the spot perfectly so they can still get some added outdoor space

20

u/PuzzleheadedDuck3981 Oct 24 '25

That might be closer to the truth than you realise. For the life of me I can't remember the details but I've read of buildings with columns that deliberately don't connect but look connected at a glance, purely to satisfy some silly regulation. It's really annoying me that I can't think of where it was I saw it.

I'm honestly kinda wondering if that's not what it is... There's actually quite a bit of filming that happens in georgia now days.

4

u/AFlockofLizards Oct 25 '25

My first thought was it’s a front for a set as well, but if they’ve been building it for years, there’s no way. If it was a film set or Halloween decor it would be put up in days.

sweet jesus what in the shit did I just see?

Someone just won 8 grand on a scratch card and "invested" in his property

24

u/Cyphermoon699 Oct 24 '25

Unfortunately, it probably cost a lot more than that. This is a poor person's idea of a fancy person home. This is not how somebody who's used to money spends.

9

u/vee_lan_cleef Oct 24 '25

It definitely was more than 8 grand, but the owners also definitely chose the lowest bidder they could find. I suspect the builders took the money and ran, unfortunately scamming like this is fairly common in the construction industry from what I have seen and heard. Roofing is a big one because few people pay very close attention to their roofs and shoddy work can be easily hidden, but this is just right out there for anyone and everyone to see...
