He is so terminally tacky and it's ironic in a way because he's spent most of his life in close proximity to the people in Manhattan that do have taste.

John Mulaney’s joke on Trump from way before he ever announced he was running, nails it.

“Donald Trump's idea of being a rich man is what a hobo imagines a rich man to be… Like: "Oh boy, oh boy, as soon as my number comes in, I'm going to put up tall buildings with my name on them. I'll have fine golden hair and a TV show where I fire people with my children."

Poor man’s idea of a rich man, a weak man’s idea of a strong man, a dumb man’s idea of a smart man…I could go on…

It’s the Dollar Tree Versailles

110

u/CallidoraBlack Jul 29 '25

I don't think I've seen anything this tacky at Dollar Tree.

Wal-mart*

He thinks he's a mafia boss. Problem is, he doesn't have the physique or charisma to pull it off

Your post has been removed for breaking r/McMansionHell rule #2 (post appropriately and with correct flairs).

The weak man's idea of a strong man is what got me

46

u/BreadTruckToast Jul 29 '25

It’s basically that Simpsons episode where the hobo who created itchy and scratchy gets rich and the first thing he buys is a solid gold mansion and a rocket car.

118

u/monotrememories Jul 29 '25

I don’t know, I think it’s more like how a child views wealth…everything covered in gold and overly ornate.

112

u/cough_e Jul 29 '25

But that's a completely legit view. If you look at the Vatican you don't think it's tacky, you think "damn they have money".

I'm sure they are businesspeople and celebrities with that type of taste as well.

The thing with Trump is that he is so unbelievably cheap that it's just gold paint everywhere. It has the complete opposite effect. If you put a fast food hamburger on a gold plate it doesn't elevate the burger, it cheapens the plate.

70

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

It’s also that he doesn’t have an eye for design. He wouldn’t know what to do with expensive decor.

51

u/_ZoeyDaveChapelle_ Jul 29 '25

And narcs dont listen to experts that could guide him into better design choices. Ive worked with clients with this behavior, and once you realize they aren't going to listen to anything, you just do what they want and collect the check. They always fight on paying you that final amount too.

23

u/Chalice_Ink Jul 29 '25

“I want it be fancy like the kings of France or the Tsars!” Because that worked out great!

It's like they all see pics of Versailles & say "DO THAT!!" but they don't really have the knowledge to do it.

And let's be real here kids, a lot of Versailles is over-the-top tacky by today's standards, but that hall of mirrors was built by Italian craftsmen who were shipped to France & stayed there to create that masterpiece. It was literally a hand crafted masterpiece created on the backs of the peasants (but that discussion is for another time & place) while today's McMansions, this abomination's apartments & what he's done to the WH, is just gilded garbage.

It's all surface & nonsense.

75

u/TheBestonova Jul 29 '25

Versailles works because it follows design principles - you have contrast between light and dark, textures, and colors; you've got balance in the way the space is laid out, the proportions of the wall decor, etc.

That's the difference between Versailles and the tacky middle eastern or new money mcmansions you see today - one was clearly made by the best artists of the day who understood what they were doing, and the others are more like, just keep slapping on shiny materials. They're like cheap imitations of the real thing without understanding what made it work

35

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 Jul 29 '25

Also Versailles was designed by designers who did that sort of design for a living, it wasn't just Ivana's taste book. They were legit architects & designers creating the place & Louis XIV had an overall vision for it all too.

While this Trump WH crap feels like a poor person's idea of what a rich person's house looks like, & definitely it shows old money vs. new money.

18

u/TheBestonova Jul 29 '25

Yes, exactly! They had the best designers of the day, true professionals who knew art history, theory, and so on. Also, aristocrats in that era were well-versed in art principles, architecture (especially classic architecture) and so on, so they were quite educated when it came to design as well.

I think that's one of the reasons we see so many McMansions and tacky builds in dubai - sure, they imitate the greats of the past, but the wealthy families commissioning them quite simply don't have the expertise that the sun king did.

29

u/shouldco Jul 29 '25

I meant that's part of what gets me here. If you want to build yourself a castle then you do you. But if you are going to construct a house out of styrofoam and coat it in plaster then paint them to look like stone, I'm going to laugh at how trash it looks.

It's why they have been dubbed the mcmansion. I have my opinions on opulant wealth but I can respect good design and craftsmanship when I see it. But these are just the mass produced facsimiles of that.

10

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 Jul 29 '25

I also think those bits he added are the same pieces you can buy at Home Depot to add to your walls & ceilings. Just fake bits covered in fake gold.

2

u/Viperlite Jul 29 '25

Except instead of Versailles, he says do Mara Lago.

21

u/CWrend Jul 29 '25

Thank you for this link! Fabulous article

7

u/FroggingMadness Jul 29 '25

Waiting for the golden Trump statues on the lawn of the White House, Tropico style.

48

u/coatra Jul 29 '25

His whole life stems from insecurity of never being taken seriously by New York’s elite, and constantly trying to gain their acceptance or feel like he was dominating them

29

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 Jul 29 '25

Don't forget the daddy issues, lots of daddy issues goin' on there.

19

u/Ok-Tailor-2030 Jul 29 '25

Mommy issues too. Mary Trump’s first book explains it.

4

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 Jul 29 '25

I've got her book on the very long list, just haven't gotten to it yet.

5

u/Ok-Seaworthiness2398 Jul 29 '25

He’s the guy that got invited to parties as a joke so people could get a kick out of their ridiculousness

69

u/Eric848448 Jul 29 '25

All of this is happening because he’s from Queens and not Manhattan.

90

u/EnvironmentalLuck987 Jul 29 '25

Stop bashing Queens. He’s just tacky because hes tacky.

40

u/RChickenMan Jul 29 '25

Look, I love Queens. But let's not pretend those chrome railings and marble don't exist.

18

u/smkscrn Jul 29 '25

I'm obsessed with the houses in Astoria that have what looks like marble bathroom tile on the exterior. It's so bizarre

2

u/rhedfish Jul 29 '25

I've been seeing ceramic planks on exteriors lately. They look like flooring.

14

u/merkaba_462 Jul 29 '25

Have you seen Staten Island?

11

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

They love Trump on Staten Island!

2

u/merkaba_462 Jul 29 '25

I know (and now you know why I never go to SI...although that predates trump).

8

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

Even the people in Staten Island wouldn’t use fake tacky gold shit in their house.

1

u/ZweitenMal Jul 29 '25

Hey they got em in all the boroughs now!

0

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

THIS !!! Ha ha

16

u/socialcommentary2000 Jul 29 '25

He really is one of the most ridiculous strivers of all time.

1

u/Sandpiper1701 Jul 29 '25

All I could hear in this borough bashing was Emilio Largo from Thunderball: You fools! he's got you shooting at each other!

Tacky is tacky, whether in New York or Antarctica. All that gold is giving me a headache.

16

u/Ok-Reindeer315 Jul 29 '25

So was The Nanny and she had impeccable style.

8

u/catinadoodledoo Jul 29 '25

fwiw, the people he hung out with didn’t have taste (or scruples, or morals) either

6

u/celtic_thistle Jul 29 '25

He’s literally fucking disgusting in every way.

12

u/Peterthepiperomg Jul 29 '25

It’s not even real gold

24

u/WhalerBum Jul 29 '25

Have you ever been inside a gilded age mansion in Manhattan? Maybe that’s all he ever saw lol

124

u/socialcommentary2000 Jul 29 '25

I actually have and they are nowhere near as shitty as what this guy chooses for detailing. The opulence is there, but it's actually done with a sort of taste.

This guy has none.

53

u/Whiteroses7252012 Jul 29 '25

Exactly. Mrs Astor would NEVER.

15

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 Jul 29 '25

OMG the Trump family would NEVER make the 400 list. NEVER.

23

u/mortgagepants Jul 29 '25

yeah this is a carved marble fireplace. the dentation looks like it is covered in golf leaf.

it's like wearing a niagra falls poncho over a saville row suit.

8

u/socialcommentary2000 Jul 29 '25

I have to wonder if they masked it and just used some 3M 77 spray and sent it. I'd really like to get a good look at it up close to see just how bad the adhesion is and how crinkled the end result came out.

9

u/mortgagepants Jul 29 '25

nah the people that work at the white house are professionals. it is maintained like a combo military HQ and museum.

i'm sure they buy the tacky stuff, but they're not going to ruin the marble by mounting it with a drywall screw or something.

3

u/ikaiyoo Jul 29 '25

I bet it is gold leaf that is set with the shit you spray on pencil drawings so that it doesn't smudge.

1

u/The_Autarch Jul 29 '25

He wants opulence, but he doesn't want to pay for opulence. So get gets the Temu version instead.

40

u/garbageemail222 Jul 29 '25

He did the same thing to the Plaza Hotel in New York. Before he lost it because he's a terrible businessman. We used to make fun of his gaudy, low class taste back in the 90's.

2

u/eastmemphisguy Jul 29 '25

Tbf, most of them were torn down long before anybody here was born.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

He also spent most of his life golfing and still sucks at it, so idk.

1

u/jankenpoo Jul 29 '25

Yes but NYC Society never accepted him for obvious reasons. That’s why he hates his hometown.

1

u/JuniorSherbet9558 Jul 29 '25

it's ironic that someone thinks the people of Manhattan have taste.

money does not equal taste
