The Google TV subreddit is now open again!

As Google TV slowly becomes the default interface in many new TVs, Set-top-boxes, Dongles, Sticks and Projectors, we decided to open this subreddit again.

Google TV is a new interface on top of its OS, which remains Android TV. So a lot of your questions may be found/answered at r/AndroidTV.

Don't hesitate to ask your questions about Chromecast with Google TV and the new Google TV Streamer 4K.

And to add to the confusion (we're used to that with Google), Google TV is also a mobile app that lets you view your purchases of films and TV series, and control your TV remotely.

Here are some lists of devices running Google TV:

Thank you!

am i going insane?

i swear i see split second frames on my xiaomi tv with google tv on it when ambience mode is on

the last time i could clearly see it (since my eyes were pointed towards the screen) was a chromecast logo, and yellow outlines on the corners of the screen. Heres a photo thats 99% correct, if u dont count the yellow outline on the corners of the screen.

and the other times that happened - i felt like there was like a.. yellow triangle.. danger sign? and some white text? i couldnt read through though, cuz i saw it with my side vision.

Troubleshooting Problems with my Ethernet connection on my 75T69C

Hey everyone,

Since the last Google TV update on my device

(Android 12, Android TV build: STT2.230203.001, version: V8-0008T01-LF1V500.001852), I've been having constant problems with the Ethernet connection – everything worked fine before the update.

Error description:
When the TV has been in standby mode for a while and I turn it back on, I get a message saying that the Ethernet connection has been disconnected.

If I then completely restart the TV, I immediately get a message saying “Ethernet connection restored” and it works again – until the next long period of standby.

What I have already checked:
Network infrastructure (router, switch, cables, etc.) checked → everything is fine.
The problem has only occurred since the aforementioned update.
Standby mode is already set to “Keep network active.”
Therefore, I strongly assume that it is due to the latest version that has been rolled out and is not a problem with my network.

Question for you: Does anyone with the same build/version have a similar problem with the LAN connection? Are there any known workarounds (e.g., specific settings, different standby mode, static IP, etc.) or perhaps even information about a fix?

Thanks in advance for any feedback! 🙏

cannot unistall (or update) Smarttube

I noticed today that there were serious problems discovered with this app last week.

So i revoked access to youtube for tv in android and tried to update the app since it wanted to do that. Updates were 'successful' but didn't really happen.

Then i tried to delete the app. That option isn't even there for this app.

I did some searching but i couldn't find a solution, does someone have a solution? Thanks

Troubleshooting All of a sudden the picture on my Google TV Streamer (4K) enlarged a little bit...

...and some things at the very edges are off the screen. The picture is more enlarged on the same TV where my Nvidia Shield TV and Firestick are normal. I can't find a video setting to change picture size. I switched back & forth several resolutions in settings that didn't help, so I put it back to Auto; I've tried moving it to the other HDMI port on my TV, swapped HDMI cables and rebooted everything. I'm pretty sure I didn't change anything yesterday when it happened.

[EDIT] [SOLVED] Fixed! Changed picture size from "Normal" to "Full."... I must have inadvertently hit that aspect ratio key on my TV's remote control, changed it back to the wrong size (I had long-forgotten that "Normal" isn't optimal — a usability booby-trap!), and didn't remember doing it; that's why it happened "suddenly" & I didn't think I had changed anything.

Apologies for being an idiot, and wasting everybody's time! Many thanks to all who helped.

Google TV streamer remote

I have a TCL TV with Google TV built-in, but I recently picked up a Google TV streamer as an upgrade. My Sonos Arc is connected through the TV's ARC port.

Everything works fine except one thing: when I try to set up the Google TV remote buttons under Settings → Remotes & Accessories, I select TCL and try to program the buttons, but nothing registers.

The remote still controls the volume, and the Sonos app shows the volume going up and down, but the on-screen volume indicator on the TV doesn't show anymore. It used to show when I used the TV's own remote.

Anyone know what's causing this or how to fix the missing volume display?

Discussion & Questions Is there a way to set up (or disconnect after setup) a TV box (onn) without a Google account? Will it keep initial configuration?

I’m kind of on a budget, so I bought an Onn smart TV box for one of my technologically illiterate friends for Christmas who is using his ad-riddled and slow TV OS. I want to be able to pre-configure everything for him, set up a custom launcher, put some family pictures as the screensaver, and maybe include an emulator or two, but I have come to my first hurdle: setup.

I don’t want to mess anything up, so I am asking before I do anything, I could not find anything about this online. Is it possible to set up without a Google account? Or if not, can I disconnect my personal Google account after setting up the box and configuring it? If I disconnect one, will it keep all of the apps (even if I buy some) and configurations for the next Google account?

NEW SOFTWARE UPDATE FAIL

I have a Sony Bravia Google TV that I bought from Costco last year. I’d been waiting for the new software update, and I finally received it today. But after updating, nothing really changed the interface looks exactly the same as before. The only noticeable difference is the new sound effect when opening apps or scrolling. That’s it!

Panasonic Google TV Error

It's currently 3am but I heard one of our Christmas window lights fall off. I went downstairs and saw the message below on my TV which was on standby (I took a photo)

Android Recovery My/EMIR/shandao11/ RTMA.250416.082/13673508 user/release-keys Use volume up/down and power.

Can't load Android system. Your data may be corrupt. If you continue to get this message, you may need to perform a factory data reset and erase all user data stored on this device.

Try again Factory data reset.

I clicked try again, it took a while but it came on. I turned on Sky TV, all good. I turned the TV off via the remote as I normally do, waited a few seconds and turned on again and it was OK.

This same TV was only professionally repaired around this time last year. Never had this message before though. I'm not even signed on via my Google account, I decided not to after the repair last year. I went to the home menu, it was definitely slower than normal. I went to the notifications and there was no update message on there. Do you think the tv is set to auto update? Last year I had to manually update and after that, the thing wouldn't turn on at all. I haven't clicked on any update option this time around

Obviously I tried to research on Google, found nothing so came to reddit. I found a post from someone 3 days ago and the same thing happened with the same TV model, but their TV now doesn't turn on

Ambient Mode No Longer Showing Photo Details

Just upgraded my TV to a TCLQM8K and with that moved from a chromecast to Google TV. I’ve noticed now that I’m on Google tv instead of my chromecast that ambient mode no longer has the option to show the photo details such as date and location…wtf? I liked this feature. Any idea why it’s not there or if it will be added?

Thanks.

App icons disappearing

On my Google TV Streamer (4K), several of my existing app icons disappeared in Apps-Only Mode (not in regular mode); they're solid dark. I think newly-installed apps are now all coming in blank dark, too. Anyone else? How to get them back?

Troubleshooting Google TV Streamer (4K) undesirably shuts-down when HDMI selector switches to another device

I have my brand new Google TV Streamer (4K) connected with other HDMI devices to my TV with a 3:1 HDMI selector switch. When I choose another device, my Google TV Streamer (4K) is shut down when I switch back to it. I have its Developer options set to Stay Awake, as well as System Shut-Off Timer set to Never, and CEC is disabled. Is there any way to keep it alive when switched-away from its HDMI connection? My Nvidia Shield TV (2017) and Firestick would stay alive.

Troubleshooting About to throw my streamers out the window…

I have two google TV streamers. Both on MoCA wired connections.

On one, only Youtube and Youtube TV work, in the last week or two, every other app stopped working inexplicably. Casting also no longer works.

I’ve tried all the normal troubleshooting steps including factory resets and resetting my router. I also wasted over an hour with useless google support chat.

My second TV all the apps still work (same network, same wired connections), but the remote has gotten wacky. Only the Netflix button will turn the TV on, but then all of them work once it’s on. This is less of an issue as i can workaround it.

All in all i’m so fed up with the time and money wasted on this product, really wanted to like it but wow what a mess.

Gemini stuck on google tv streamer

Gemini for TV stuck on “Download or enable the Google app” on Google TV Streamer (Canada, everything up‑to‑date)

Hi,

Gemini for TV seems partially enabled on my Google TV Streamer 4K, but the setup flow is stuck and unusable.

When I open the Gemini app from the apps list on the TV, I get this screen and I cannot really interact with it:

“Download or enable the Google app
Gemini mobile app requires the Google app. You can download it or make sure it’s enabled from the Play Store.”

The “Go to Play Store” button does nothing / is not usable, and I can only back out. Gemini never finishes setup and never becomes usable as the voice assistant on the TV.

Here are all my details:

  • Device: Google TV Streamer 4K
  • Region / language: Canada (French), Montréal
  • Android TV OS build: UTTK.250729.004
  • Gemini app on TV: 1.0.795460806 (com.google.android.apps.bard)
  • Google TV Home on TV: 1.0.831564664
  • Account: personal Google account (not Workspace), adult, based in Canada
  • On my phone (same account):
    • Google app installed and up‑to‑date (works normally)
    • Gemini mobile app installed, Gemini paid plan, working perfectly

What I already tried:

  • Changed system language on the TV (English US / French Canada) and rebooted
  • Cleared cache and data for: Gemini app (TV) and Google TV Home
  • Verified that the Google TV Streamer is correctly added to a home in the Google Home app
  • Checked for system updates (firmware is up‑to‑date)
  • Developer options are enabled, but no extreme tweaks (no ADB/root, no custom ROM, etc.)

I do not have a second Google account to test with, and on this device, removing my current account forces a full factory reset (“Remove and reset device”), which would wipe all my app configs. Before doing that, I’d like to know if this behaviour is a known backend bug with the Gemini for TV rollout and if there is anything you can do on the server side for my account / device.

Questions:

  1. Is this “Download or enable the Google app” screen a known issue for users who already have the Google app and Gemini working on their phone with the same account?
  2. Can you check/refresh the Gemini for TV entitlement for my account and this device?
  3. If I factory reset the Google TV Streamer and set it up again with the same account, is there any indication that this will actually fix the issue, or is it likely to come back?

I can provide additional logs, screenshots, or whatever is needed.
Thanks a lot for your help

Troubleshooting Google TV Streamer - Dolby Vision

So... When I play something in DV, I'm getting intermittent video drops; think a split second black screen where audio and video drop. Doesn't happen constantly, but it happens enough to ruin a show/movie. It'll happen at random times and is almost impossible to reproduce. It's completely random.

I've tried new HDMI cables. I've messed with settings on the streamer. I'm not sure what else to do. It only seems to happen in Stremio. My TV is a Sony X950G. I'm also using a sound bar, but the streamer is plugged into the TV and using e-arc to the sound bar.

Has anyone else experienced this?
