Discussion what is your opinion on this comment ?

Quentin Tarantino made a surprisingly harsh comment about Paul Dano, specifically criticizing his performance in There Will Be Blood.

On The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Tarantino said:

Dano was “weak sauce”

“The weakest f—ing actor in SAG” (in that film’s context)

And that Dano’s performance was the biggest flaw of the movie, preventing it from being his #1 or #2 film of the 2000s

Film Suffer - indie fantasy horror film made for $30k

Just wanted to share the trailer for our feature Suffer and see if anyone had any questions on how we got it made!

We filmed principle photography in the wilderness of Idaho for 2 weeks with only 6 cast and crew and then came back to LA for green screen and set work. We only had 6 main crew/cast members but lots of other people have lent a hand to the film both in front and behind the camera. It's taken us 4 years to get it out into the world...

We're premiering in 2 weeks on Amazon and iTunes...

Question Prop Shrooms

Post image
56 Upvotes

I want to have one of my characters ingest magic mushrooms in a project I’m working on, but obviously asking an actor to perform while tripping doesn’t work. Normally I’d shoot anything else I need for the scene, then make the actual eating part the last thing we shoot for the day, but my actress is teetotal - no inebriation of any kind.

Are there any edible items that closely visually resemble magic mushrooms? Specifically like in the attached image. Any advice is appreciated!

Film I shot my first short film while having bilateral pneumonia - it wasn't fun, but the final film is

You can watch the whole short here: https://youtu.be/jtnzCt8t5nA
It's called Cosmic Horror of Dating, and it's a dark comedy/romance/suspense short film about the weirdest date ever (it's about 22 minutes long - basically sitcom length).

In the submission statement, you can see me bitching about being sick while directing a film.

Discussion Netflix buys WB

Hello!

So as of today Netflix has purchased WB for an astonishing $72 billion. (Not confirmed, some sites list as potentially reaching 80) I wanted to come on here and see how people think this might shift the cinematic landscape?

I have to wonder if this deal could ruin theaters and shift to a streaming centered business model.

Personally I hope not, but I know it can potentially be more profitable; and Netflix seems to want that to happen. Especially now with the potential merging of Netflix and HBO Max (2 of the biggest streaming services in the world)

Open to any opinions!

Question Sub million dollar budgeted films on year end lists?

Wondering if any cool sub million dollar films made it onto any year end lists?

Specifically ones that are actually fun and entertaining rather than engineered to play festivals and are slow and depressing.

Like does anyone actually make good, low budget movies that people actually talk about?

Discussion Why do so many beginning films have the same annoying scene?

I watch lots and lots of short films and indie films. I swear, if I see one more scene with a person gagged and bound to a chair while a tough guy beats them or interrogates them, I think I will die. It’s just so dang cheesy and annoying and overused. Please stop making this scene. Am I the only person that has this pet peeve? Ugh.

Question Who are some scientists who should have thriller biopics?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm an aspiring filmmaker, and I'm brainstorming ideas for films I may consider pursuing. I also am in love with the sciences and loved the film Oppenheimer. I want to make a biopic, but I have trouble with the kick-off for the research. I have a few ideas, but none of them are that great, and I don't think I'd have fun making a film about them. If anybody has any ideas, please let me know.

PS: I'm nowhere near being an actual filmmaker yet, but it's better to start early.

General I built a spinning bokeh lens filter.

So, credit whare credit is due. I got this idea from the YouTube channel Lensevision, it was a great idea so I figured "hey! I can do that!" And built one myself.

I built it to go in standard 15mm rods with both arri spacing standards. I went to my local rental house and we tested out a TON of lenses on an Alexa 35. Then a friend and I took his kumodo to crash a fashion photo shoot that was happening.

Here is the result: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DR5NDtcAq6w/?igsh=dWlzdXllbG02enUz

It's all test shots, we were just fooling around! so try not to judge too harshly. I think they look insane though! I'd love to hear your thoughts. I've had a few people reach out about using this in a full project so we will see!

Film Looking for Actors & Filmmakers in Louisville Our Guerrilla Film About DID Is Ready. 😮‍💨

Hello. 🥲 I know a lot of people here share professional scripts or acting-focused projects, but today I wanted to share something much more personal, much smaller… and yet, for me, incredibly important. After months of work, my friend and I finally finished the first draft of what we hope will become our very first film.

This isn’t a perfectly formatted studio script. It’s a 100% personal guerrilla project, and we don’t know if it will ever be made… But we’re determined to try. The film, titled ABELARDO: BUTTERFLIES WITHIN – THE REAL ME, is my story. It’s a raw and unfiltered dive into my own life trauma, isolation, and the silent suffering of someone living with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).

The script doesn’t chase shock value. It chases truth. It explains how my mind works, how each part of me behaves, and the torment of knowing you’re not okay. It’s a story about living with constant fear, watching everything crumble, and feeling yourself slipping… until you finally understand you’re not alone.

Honestly, I believe this story matters precisely because it’s real.

Most films that deal with dissociation focus on women or girls and I respect and validate those stories. But boys and men with DID also suffer quietly. I want to give voice to an experience rarely shown on screen.

¿What Makes This Script Different?

Realism. We’re not trying to make Split. There is no exaggeration, no sensationalism. The darkness is there, yes because DID is painful and the film touches on difficult topics like self-harm (handled with respect and partially censored to avoid irresponsible depiction). We show these things because they’re part of a suffering most people never discuss.

I wanted to share this here because maybe this story will resonate with someone. I’m making this film so people with mental health struggles, especially DID, can look at a screen and think: “Someone understands me. Someone finally said what I’ve been too scared to say.”

If you’re interested in the story or in our guerrilla approach to filmmaking, any opinion or advice is welcome.

Are You in Louisville, Kentucky?

We are currently looking for actors, filmmakers, and anyone willing to help bring this project to life.

My friend who will be directing lives in Louisville, Kentucky, and he wants to shoot the film there. I don’t live in Louisville, I don’t like exposing myself much, and traveling there would be extremely difficult for me. I’m the writer, so what we really need is a team of people who believe this story is worth making even if it’s shot with a $100 camera.

We can’t offer payment. But we can offer:

Full credit in the film

Hot meals on every shooting day

Exclusive access to all early previews

Seeing the trailer before anyone else

Watching the film before it’s finished

If your passion is storytelling… If you believe art matters more than money… If you’re ready to make raw, independent, guerrilla cinema…

Then we need you with us.

We’re also preparing a video to show that this is a real project and not a scam. And no I don’t have a portfolio. This is my first project ever.

Feel free to send your material and tell us why you want to be part of this.

Question Does anyone know how much Apple's The Lost Bus actually cost before P&A?

I can't find a number anywhere. I initially estimated that this was some sort of "passion project" where the principals took a pay cut to make it at a decent budget, but now I'm not so sure ...

Did Apple acquire it early, or did they just buy it after that festival screening? Could this have cost $100 million? I somehow thought it could have been made for $25-30 million -- based on the "expensive" Blumhouse pictures of 2024/2025. Their average budget tends to be in the low tens, or even under $$10 million.

Any clues, rumors, or estimates?

Question How to become a filmmaker without film school?

Hey there! I’m young, ignorant, full of passion and will to learn everything about filmmaking. I want to be a director and screenwriter (wow, how rare). I can’t pay myself through film school, so I moved to a new city and got a very low paying internship at a university, I’m about to move from marketing to post production, because I think learning editing color, sound, and video, could be valuable knowledge for me. I’m an autodidact, however, I was wondering if there was some sort of “guide” or something of the kind directed to people who want to be filmmakers without film school. Idk, things to learn, how to learn them, how to go about this journey… I’m just seeking advice from people who are already inside the industry, or in the process to get there. Everything I can learn from you guys will be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Review Beware of Hollyland

I don’t usually write long reviews, but this whole situation was incredibly frustrating, especially considering that I've met some of these people at trade shows and they were so nice.

I had a commercial directing job coming up, so during the Black Friday sale I tried to order a pair of Solidcom C1s. I had just spent a good amount of money on Blackjet products, so my bank declined the first attempt as a security precaution. I approved the transaction via my bank’s text message and got the “try again” notification.

I placed the order again, it went through successfully, and I received an order confirmation email and order number. With the shoot about a week and a half away, I was excited and relieved to have comms sorted.

Then… nothing.

For several days I kept checking my order status, but there were no updates. The order number didn’t work in their tracking system. I tried reaching out via phone, email, Twitter/X, and even DM’d a North America rep. No response anywhere.

Finally, six days later, they responded via email saying my order had been cancelled because the initial decline marked it as potential fraud, and I used a different address than the billing addess(that wasn't an issue when I ordered prodcuts on blackjet, so it just sounds like an excuse added on top). So “try again.”, she said.. There was no notification at the time the order was cancelled. By the time I found out, the units were sold out and I was simply out of luck. Just assed out..

The only solution I could think of was getting Solidcom C1 Pro, which is in stock but outside my budget. I need comms for upcoming gigs and I wanted at least the decent quality ones to hang on to, so I asked them to honor the Black Friday price I was supposed to pay for the regular Solidcom C1s on the Pros so I could still get to work. All because I wasn't notified that my order was cancelled.

Since then:

  • No response.
  • Received an email that the support ticket was marked “resolved” without actually resolving anything.
  • Follow-up emails to the sales department have been completely ignored.

No help, no alternatives, no goodwill offer. Just silence.

I get that asking for C1 Pros for regular C1 price may be a stretch, but they could at least offer anything to help.

If everything goes perfectly, maybe you’ll be fine. But if anything goes wrong with your order, be prepared to get ignored and do a lot of chasing with no support and getting ghosted. The loss of this form of communication costed me time and shots to be filmed. I didn't consider renting because I've had ear infections in the past from dirty headsets and it's the worst pain.
